The Plot to Kill Jesus
11WhenG3753 JesusG2424 had finishedG5055 allG3956 theseG3778 wordsG3056, He saidG3004 to His disciplesG3101, 2“2You knowG3609 that afterG3326 twoG1417 daysG2250 3the PassoverG3957 is comingG1096, and the SonG5207 of ManG444 is to be 4handedG3860 over for crucifixionG4717.”
35ThenG5119 the chiefG749 priestsG749 and the eldersG4245 of the peopleG2992 were gatheredG4863 togetherG4863 in 6the courtG833 of the highG749 priestG749, namedG3004 7CaiaphasG2533; 4and they 8plottedG4823 togetherG4823 to seizeG2902 JesusG2424 by stealthG1388 and killG615 Him. 5But they were sayingG3004, “Not duringG1722 the festivalG1859, 9otherwiseG2443G3361 a riotG2351 might occurG1096 amongG1722 the peopleG2992.”
The Precious Ointment
610NowG1161 when JesusG2424 was in 11BethanyG963, at the homeG3614 of SimonG4613 the leperG3015, 712a womanG1135 cameG4334 to Him with an alabasterG211 vialG211 of veryG927 costlyG927 perfumeG3464, and she pouredG2708 it on His headG2776 as He reclinedG345 at the table. 8But the disciplesG3101 were indignantG23 when they sawG3708 this, and saidG3004, “WhyG1519G5101 thisG3778 wasteG684? 9For thisG3778 perfume mightG1410 have been soldG4097 for a highG4183 priceG4183 and the money givenG1325 to the poorG4434.” 10But JesusG2424, awareG1097 of this, saidG3004 to them, “WhyG5101 do you botherG2873G3930 the womanG1135? For she has doneG2038 a goodG2570 deedG2041 to Me. 11For you alwaysG3842 haveG2192 13the poorG4434 with you; but you do not alwaysG3842 haveG2192 Me. 12For when she pouredG906 thisG3778 perfumeG3464 on My bodyG4983, she didG4160 it 14to prepareG1779 Me for burialG1779. 13TrulyG281 I sayG3004 to you, 15whereverG3699G1437 thisG3778 gospelG2098 is preachedG2784 in the wholeG3650 worldG2889, whatG3739 thisG3778 womanG3778 has doneG4160 will alsoG2532 be spokenG2980 of in memoryG3422 of her.”
Judas’s Bargain
1416ThenG5119 oneG1520 of the twelveG1427, namedG3004 17JudasG2455 IscariotG2469, wentG4198 to the chiefG749 priestsG749 15and saidG3004, “WhatG5101 are you willingG2309 to giveG1325 me 18to 1920betrayG3860 Him to you?” And 21they weighedG2476 out thirtyG5144 22piecesG694 of silverG694 to him. 16From thenG5119 on he began lookingG2212 for a goodG2120 opportunityG2120 to 23betrayG3860 24Jesus.
1725NowG1161 on the firstG4413 day of 26UnleavenedG106 Bread the disciplesG3101 cameG4334 to JesusG2424 and askedG3004, “WhereG4226 do You wantG2309 us to prepareG2090 for You to eatG2068 the PassoverG3957?” 18And He saidG3004, “GoG5217 into the cityG4172 to 27a certainG1170 manG1170, and sayG3004 to him, ‘The TeacherG1320 saysG3004, “28My timeG2540 is nearG1451; I am to keepG4160 the PassoverG3957 at your house with My disciplesG3101.”’” 19The disciplesG3101 didG4160 as JesusG2424 had directedG4929 them; and they preparedG2090 the PassoverG3957.
The Last Passover
2029NowG1161 when eveningG3798 cameG1096, Jesus was recliningG345 at the table with the twelveG1427 disciplesG3101. 21As they were eatingG2068, He saidG3004, “30TrulyG281 I sayG3004 to you that oneG1520 of you will betrayG3860 Me.” 22Being deeplyG4970 grievedG3076, they 31eachG1538 oneG1520 beganG757 to sayG3004 to Him, “SurelyG3385 not I, LordG2962?” 23And He answeredG611, “32He who dippedG1686 his handG5495 with Me in the bowlG5165 is the oneG3778 who will betrayG3860 Me. 24The SonG5207 of ManG444 is to goG5217, 33justG2531 as it is writtenG1125 of Him; but woeG3759 to that manG444 by whomG3739 the SonG5207 of ManG444 is betrayedG3860! 34It would have beenG1510 goodG2570 35for that manG444 ifG1487 he had not been bornG1080.” 25And 36JudasG2455, who was betrayingG3860 Him, saidG3004, “SurelyG3385 it is not I, 37RabbiG4461?” Jesus saidG3004 to him, “38You have saidG3004 it yourselfG4771.”
The Lord’s Supper Instituted
2639While they were eatingG2068, JesusG2424 tookG2983 some breadG740, and 4041after a blessingG2127, He brokeG2806 it and gaveG1325 it to the disciplesG3101, and saidG3004, “TakeG2983, eatG2068; thisG3778 is My bodyG4983.” 27And when He had takenG2983 a cupG4221 and givenG1325 thanksG2168, He gaveG1325 it to them, sayingG3004, “DrinkG4095 from it, allG3956 of you; 28for 42thisG3778 is My bloodG129 of the covenantG1242, which is pouredG1632 out for 43manyG4183 for forgivenessG859 of sinsG266. 29But I sayG3004 to you, I will not drinkG4095 of thisG3778 fruitG1079 of the vineG288 from nowG737 on untilG2193 that dayG2250 whenG3752 I drinkG4095 it newG2537 with you in My Father’sG3962 kingdomG932.”
3044After singingG5214 a hymnG5214, they wentG1831 out to 45the MountG3735 of OlivesG1636.
31ThenG5119 JesusG2424 saidG3004 to them, “You will allG3956 4647fallG4624 awayG4624 becauseG1722 of Me thisG3778 nightG3571, for it is writtenG1125, ‘48I will strikeG3960 downG3960 the shepherdG4166, and the sheepG4263 of the flockG4167 shall be 49scatteredG1287.’ 32But afterG3326 I have been raisedG1453, 50I will goG4254 aheadG4254 of you to GalileeG1056.” 33But PeterG4074 saidG3004 to Him, “Even thoughG1487 allG3956 may 51fallG4624 awayG4624 becauseG1722 of You, I will neverG3763 fallG4624 awayG4624.” 34JesusG2424 saidG5346 to him, “52TrulyG281 I sayG3004 to you that 53thisG3778 very nightG3571, beforeG4250 a roosterG220 crowsG5455, you will denyG533 Me threeG5151 timesG5151.” 35PeterG4074 saidG3004 to Him, “54EvenG2579 ifG2579 I haveG1163 to dieG599 with You, I will not denyG533 You.” AllG3956 the disciplesG3101 saidG3004 the sameG3668 thingG3668 tooG2532.
The Garden of Gethsemane
3655ThenG5119 JesusG2424 cameG2064 with them to a placeG5564 calledG3004 56GethsemaneG1068, and saidG3004 to His disciplesG3101, “SitG2523 hereG847 whileG2193 I goG565 overG565 thereG1563 and prayG4336.” 37And He tookG3880 with Him 57PeterG4074 and the twoG1417 sonsG5207 of ZebedeeG2199, and beganG757 to be grievedG3076 and distressedG85. 38ThenG5119 He saidG3004 to them, “58My soulG5590 is deeplyG4036 grievedG4036, to the pointG2193 of deathG2288; remainG3306 hereG5602 and 59keepG1127 watchG1127 with Me.”
39And He wentG4281 a littleG3398 beyondG4281 them, and fellG4098 on His faceG4383 and prayedG4336, sayingG3004, “My FatherG3962, ifG1487 it is possibleG1415, let 60thisG3778 cupG4221 passG3928 from Me; 61yetG4133 not as I willG2309, but as You will.” 40And He cameG2064 to the disciplesG3101 and foundG2147 them sleepingG2518, and saidG3004 to PeterG4074, “SoG3779, you men couldG2480 not 62keepG1127 watchG1127 with Me for oneG1520 hourG5610? 4163KeepG1127 watchingG1127 and prayingG4336 that you may not enterG1525 into temptationG3986; 64the spiritG4151 is willingG4289, but the fleshG4561 is weakG772.”
42He wentG565 awayG565 againG3825 a secondG1208 timeG1208 and prayedG4336, sayingG3004, “My FatherG3962, ifG1487 thisG3778 65cannotG1410G3756 passG3928 awayG3928 unlessG1437G3361 I drinkG4095 it, 66Your willG2307 be doneG1096.” 43AgainG3825 He cameG2064 and foundG2147 them sleepingG2518, for their eyesG3788 were heavyG916. 44And He leftG863 them againG3825, and wentG565 awayG565 and prayedG4336 a thirdG5154 timeG5154, sayingG3004 the sameG846 thingG3056 onceG3825 moreG3825. 45ThenG5119 He cameG2064 to the disciplesG3101 and saidG3004 to them, “67Are you stillG3062 sleepingG2518 and restingG373? BeholdG2400, 68the hourG5610 is at handG1448 and the SonG5207 of ManG444 is being betrayedG3860 into the handsG5495 of sinnersG268. 46GetG1453 up, let us be goingG71; beholdG2400, the one who betraysG3860 Me is at handG1448!”
Jesus’ Betrayal and Arrest
4769While He was stillG2089 speakingG2980, beholdG2400, 70JudasG2455, oneG1520 of the twelveG1427, cameG2064 up 71accompaniedG3326G846 by a largeG4183 crowdG3793 with swordsG3162 and clubsG3586, who came from the chiefG749 priestsG749 and eldersG4245 of the peopleG2992. 48NowG1161 he who was betrayingG3860 Him gaveG1325 them a signG4592, sayingG3004, “WhomeverG3739G302 I kissG5368, He is the one; seizeG2902 Him.” 49ImmediatelyG2112 Judas wentG4334 to JesusG2424 and saidG3004, “HailG5463, 72RabbiG4461!” and kissedG2705 Him. 50And JesusG2424 saidG3004 to him, “73FriendG2083, do whatG3739 you haveG3918 comeG3918 for.” ThenG5119 they cameG4334 and laidG1911 handsG5495 on JesusG2424 and seizedG2902 Him.
51And beholdG2400, 74oneG1520 of thoseG3588 whoG3588 were with JesusG2424 75reachedG1614 and drewG645 out his 76swordG3162, and struckG3960 the 77slaveG1401 of the highG749 priestG749 and 78cutG851 offG851 his earG5621. 52ThenG5119 JesusG2424 saidG3004 to him, “PutG654 your swordG3162 backG654 into its placeG5117; for 79allG3956 thoseG3588 who takeG2983 up the swordG3162 shall perishG622 by the swordG3162. 53OrG2228 do you thinkG1380 that I cannotG1410G3756 appealG3870 to My FatherG3962, and He will at onceG737 putG3936 at My disposalG3936 moreG4183 than twelveG1427 8081legionsG3003 of 82angelsG32? 54HowG4459 thenG3767 will 83the ScripturesG1124 be fulfilledG4137, which say that it mustG1163 happenG1096 thisG3779 wayG3779?”
55At that timeG5610 JesusG2424 saidG3004 to the crowdsG3793, “Have you comeG1831 out with swordsG3162 and clubsG3586 to arrestG4815 Me as you would againstG1909 a robberG3027? 84EveryG2596 dayG2250 I used to sitG2516 in the templeG2413 teachingG1321 and you did not seizeG2902 Me. 56But allG3650 thisG3778 has takenG1096 placeG1096 to fulfillG4137 85the ScripturesG1124 of the prophetsG4396.” ThenG5119 allG3956 the disciplesG3101 leftG863 Him and fledG5343.
Jesus before Caiaphas
5786ThoseG3588 who had seizedG2902 JesusG2424 ledG520 Him awayG520 to 87CaiaphasG2533, the highG749 priestG749, whereG3699 the scribesG1122 and the eldersG4245 were gatheredG4863 togetherG4863. 58But 88PeterG4074 was followingG190 Him at a distanceG3113 as farG2193 as the 89courtyardG833 of the highG749 priestG749, and enteredG1525 in, and satG2521 downG2521 with the 9091officersG5257 to seeG3708 the outcomeG5056.
59NowG1161 the chiefG749 priestsG749 and the wholeG3650 9293CouncilG4892 kept tryingG2212 to obtainG2212 falseG5577 testimonyG5577 againstG2596 JesusG2424, soG3704 that they might putG2289 Him to deathG2289. 60They did not findG2147 any, even though manyG4183 falseG5577 witnessesG5577 cameG4334 forwardG4334. But laterG5305 on 94twoG1417 cameG4334 forwardG4334, 61and saidG3004, “ThisG3778 manG3778 statedG5346, ‘95I amG1410 ableG1410 to destroyG2647 the 96templeG3485 of GodG2316 and to rebuildG3618 it 97in threeG5140 daysG2250.’” 62The highG749 priestG749 stoodG450 up and saidG3004 to Him, “Do You not answerG611? WhatG5101 is it that theseG3778 menG3778 are testifyingG2649 againstG2649 You?” 63But 98JesusG2424 keptG4623 silentG4623. 99And the highG749 priestG749 saidG3004 to Him, “I 100101adjureG1844 You by 102the livingG2198 GodG2316, that You tellG3004 us whetherG1487 You are 103the ChristG5547, 104the SonG5207 of GodG2316.” 64JesusG2424 saidG3004 to him, “105You have saidG3004 it yourself; neverthelessG4133 I tellG3004 you, 106hereafterG575G737 you will seeG3708 107the SonG5207 of ManG444 sittingG2521 at the rightG1188 handG1188 of PowerG1411, and 108comingG2064 on the cloudsG3507 of heavenG3772.”
65ThenG5119 the highG749 priestG749 109toreG1284 his 110robesG2440 and saidG3004, “He has blasphemedG987! WhatG5101 furtherG2089 needG5532 do we haveG2192 of witnessesG3144? BeholdG2396, you have nowG3568 heardG191 the blasphemyG988; 66whatG5101 do you thinkG1380?” They answeredG611, “111He deservesG1777 deathG2288!”
67112ThenG5119 they 113spatG1716 in His faceG4383 and beatG2852 Him with their fistsG2852; and othersG3588 114slappedG4474 Him, 68and saidG3004, “115ProphesyG4395 to us, You 116ChristG5547; whoG5101 is the one who hitG3817 You?”
Peter’s Denials
69117NowG1161 PeterG4074 was sittingG2521 outsideG1854 in the 118courtyardG833, and a servant-girlG3814 cameG4334 to him and saidG3004, “You tooG2532 were with JesusG2424 the GalileanG1057.” 70But he deniedG720 it beforeG1715 them allG3956, sayingG3004, “I do not knowG3609 whatG5101 you are talkingG3004 about.” 71When he had goneG1831 out to the gatewayG4440, anotherG243 servant-girl sawG3708 him and saidG3004 to thoseG3588 whoG3588 were thereG1563, “ThisG3778 manG3778 was with JesusG2424 of NazarethG3480.” 72And againG3825 he deniedG720 it with an oathG3727, “I do not knowG3609 the manG444.” 73A littleG3398 laterG3326 the bystandersG2476 cameG4334 up and saidG3004 to PeterG4074, “SurelyG230 you tooG2532 are one of them; 119for evenG2532 the wayG2981 you talkG2981 120givesG4160 you awayG1212G4160.” 74ThenG5119 he beganG757 to curseG2617 and swearG3660, “I do not knowG3609 the manG444!” And immediatelyG2117 a roosterG220 crowedG5455. 75And PeterG4074 rememberedG3403 the wordG4487 which JesusG2424 had saidG3004, “121BeforeG4250 a roosterG220 crowsG5455, you will denyG533 Me threeG5151 timesG5151.” And he wentG1831 out and weptG2799 bitterlyG4090.
