Israel Multiplies in Egypt
1Now theseH428 are the 1namesH8034 of the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 who cameH935 to EgyptH4714 with JacobH3290; they cameH935 eachH376 oneH376 2with his householdH1004: 2ReubenH7205, SimeonH8095, LeviH3878 and JudahH3063; 3IssacharH3485, ZebulunH2074 and BenjaminH1144; 4DanH1835 and NaphtaliH5321, GadH1410 and AsherH836. 5AllH3605 the 3personsH5315 who cameH3318 from the loinsH3409 of JacobH3290 were 4seventyH7657 5in numberH5315, but JosephH3130 was already in EgyptH4714. 66JosephH3130 diedH4191, and allH3605 his brothersH251 and allH3605 that generationH1755. 7But the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 7were fruitfulH6509 and 8increasedH8317 greatlyH8317, and multipliedH7235, and becameH6105 exceedinglyH3966 9mightyH6105, so that the landH776 was filledH4390 with them.
8Now a newH2319 10kingH4428 aroseH6965 overH5921 EgyptH4714, whoH834 did not knowH3045 JosephH3130. 911He saidH559 to his peopleH5971, “BeholdH2009, the peopleH5971 of the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 are 12moreH7227 and mightierH6099 thanH4480 we. 10ComeH3051, let us 13dealH2449 wiselyH2449 with them, orH6435 elseH6435 they will multiplyH7235 and 14in the eventH1961H3588H7122 of warH4421, they will alsoH1571 joinH3254 themselves to those whoH834 hateH8130 us, and fightH3898 against us and 15departH5927 from the landH776.” 11So they appointedH7760 16taskmastersH8269H4522 overH5921 them to afflictH6031 them with 1718hardH5450 laborH5450. And they builtH1129 for PharaohH6547 19storageH4543 citiesH5892, PithomH6619 and 20RaamsesH7486. 12But the moreH3512 they afflictedH6031 them, 21the moreH3651 they multipliedH7235 and the moreH3651 they 22spreadH6555 out, so that they were in dreadH6973 of the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478. 13The EgyptiansH4714 compelled the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 23to laborH5647 rigorouslyH6531; 14and they madeH4843 24their livesH2425 bitterH4843 with hardH7186 laborH5656 in mortarH2563 and bricksH3843 and at allH3605 kinds of laborH5656 in the fieldH7704, allH3605 their laborsH5656 whichH834 they rigorouslyH6531 25imposedH5647 on them.
15Then the kingH4428 of EgyptH4714 spokeH559 to the HebrewH5680 midwivesH3205, oneH259 of whomH834 26was namedH8034 ShiphrahH8236 and the otherH8145 27was namedH8034 PuahH6326; 16and he saidH559, “When you are helping the HebrewH5680 womenH5680 to giveH3205 birthH3205 and seeH7200 them upon the birthstoolH70, 28ifH518 it is a sonH1121, then you shall putH4191 him to deathH4191; but ifH518 it is a daughterH1323, then she shall liveH2421.” 17But the midwivesH3205 2930fearedH3372 GodH430, and 31did not doH6213 as the kingH4428 of EgyptH4714 had 32commandedH1696 them, but let the boysH3206 liveH2421. 18So the kingH4428 of EgyptH4714 calledH7121 for the midwivesH3205 and saidH559 to them, “WhyH4069 have you doneH6213 thisH2088 thingH1697, and let the boysH3206 liveH2421?” 19The midwivesH3205 saidH559 to PharaohH6547, “BecauseH3588 the HebrewH5680 womenH5680 are not as the EgyptianH4713 womenH802; for they are vigorousH2422 and giveH3205 birthH3205 beforeH2962 the midwifeH3205 33canH935 getH935 to them.” 20So 34GodH430 was goodH3190 to the midwivesH3205, and 35the peopleH5971 multipliedH7235, and becameH6105 veryH3966 36mightyH6105. 21BecauseH3588 the midwivesH3205 3738fearedH3372 GodH430, He 3940establishedH6213 41householdsH1004 for them. 22Then PharaohH6547 commandedH6680 allH3605 his peopleH5971, sayingH559, “42EveryH3605 sonH1121 who is bornH3209 43you are to castH7993 into 44the NileH2975, and everyH3605 daughterH1323 you are to keepH2421 aliveH2421.”
