1 Corinthians Chapter 1
New American Standard Bible 1995
Appeal to Unity
1PaulG3972, 1calledG2822 as an apostleG652 of JesusG2424 ChristG5547 2by 3the willG2307 of GodG2316, and 4SosthenesG4988 our 5brotherG80,
2To 6the churchG1577 of GodG2316 which is at 7CorinthG2882, to those who have been sanctifiedG37 in ChristG5547 JesusG2424, 8saintsG40 9by callingG2822, with allG3956 who in everyG3956 placeG5117 10callG1941 on the nameG3686 of our LordG2962 JesusG2424 ChristG5547, their Lord and oursG1473:
311GraceG5485 to you and peaceG1515 from GodG2316 our FatherG3962 and the LordG2962 JesusG2424 ChristG5547.
412I thankG2168 13my GodG2316 alwaysG3842 concerningG4012 you for the graceG5485 of GodG2316 which was givenG1325 you in ChristG5547 JesusG2424, 5that in everythingG3956 you were 14enrichedG4148 in Him, in allG3956 15speechG3056 and 16allG3956 knowledgeG1108, 6evenG2531 as 17the testimonyG3142 concerning ChristG5547 was confirmedG950 18in you, 7soG5620 that you are not lackingG5302 in anyG3367 giftG5486, 19awaitingG553 eagerlyG553 the revelationG602 of our LordG2962 JesusG2424 ChristG5547, 820whoG3739 will alsoG2532 confirmG950 you to the endG5056, blamelessG410 in 21the dayG2250 of our LordG2962 JesusG2424 ChristG5547. 922GodG2316 is faithfulG4103, throughG1223 whomG3739 you were 23calledG2564 into 24fellowshipG2842 with His SonG5207, JesusG2424 ChristG5547 our LordG2962.
10NowG1161 25I exhortG3870 you, 26brethrenG80, by the nameG3686 of our LordG2962 JesusG2424 ChristG5547, that you allG3956 27agreeG846G3004 and that there be noG3361 2829divisionsG4978 amongG1722 you, but that you be 30madeG2675 completeG2675 in 31the sameG846 mindG3563 and in the sameG846 judgmentG1106. 11For I have been informedG1213 concerningG4012 you, my brethrenG80, by Chloe’sG5514 people, that there are quarrelsG2054 amongG1722 you. 12NowG1161 I meanG3004 thisG3778, that 32eachG1538 oneG1538 of you is sayingG3004, “I amG1510 of PaulG3972,” and “I of 33ApollosG625,” and “I of 34CephasG2786,” and “I of ChristG5547.” 1335Has ChristG5547 been dividedG3307? PaulG3972 was not crucifiedG4717 for you, was he? OrG2228 were you 36baptizedG907 37in the nameG3686 of PaulG3972? 1438I thankG2168 GodG2316 that I 39baptizedG907 noneG3762 of you exceptG1508 40CrispusG2921 and 41GaiusG1050, 15soG2443 that noG3361 oneG5100 would sayG3004 you were baptizedG907 42in my nameG3686. 16NowG1161 I did baptizeG907 alsoG2532 the 43householdG3624 of StephanasG4734; beyondG3062 that, I do not knowG3609 whetherG1487 I baptizedG907 anyG5100 otherG243. 1744For ChristG5547 did not sendG649 me to baptizeG907, but to preachG2097 the gospelG2097, 45not in 46clevernessG4678 of speechG3056, soG2443 that the crossG4716 of ChristG5547 would not be madeG2758 voidG2758.
The Wisdom of God
18For the wordG3056 of the crossG4716 is 47foolishnessG3472 to 48thoseG3588 who 49are perishingG622, but to us who 50are being savedG4982 it is 51the powerG1411 of GodG2316. 19For it is writtenG1125, “52I will destroyG622 the wisdomG4678 of the wiseG4680, And the clevernessG4907 of the cleverG4908 I will setG114 asideG114.” 2053WhereG4226 is the wiseG4680 manG4680? WhereG4226 is the scribeG1122? WhereG4226 is the debaterG4804 of 54thisG3778 ageG165? Has not GodG2316 55madeG3471 foolishG3471 the wisdomG4678 of 56the worldG2889? 21For sinceG1894 in the wisdomG4678 of GodG2316 57the worldG2889 throughG1223 its wisdomG4678 did not come to knowG1097 GodG2316, 58GodG2316 was well-pleasedG2106 throughG1223 the 59foolishnessG3472 of the 60messageG2782 preachedG2782 to 61saveG4982 thoseG3588 who believeG4100. 22For indeedG2532 62JewsG2453 askG154 for 63signsG4592 and GreeksG1672 searchG2212 for wisdomG4678; 23but we preachG2784 6465ChristG5547 crucifiedG4717, 66to JewsG2453 a stumblingG4625 blockG4625 and to GentilesG1484 67foolishnessG3472, 24but to thoseG3588 who are 68the calledG2822, bothG5037 JewsG2453 and GreeksG1672, ChristG5547 69the powerG1411 of GodG2316 and 70the wisdomG4678 of GodG2316. 25BecauseG3754 the 71foolishnessG3474 of GodG2316 is wiserG4680 than menG444, and 72the weaknessG772 of GodG2316 is strongerG2478 than menG444.
26For 73considerG991 your 74callingG2821, brethrenG80, that there were 75not manyG4183 wiseG4680 accordingG2596 to 76the fleshG4561, not manyG4183 mightyG1415, not manyG4183 nobleG2104; 27but 77GodG2316 has chosenG1586 the foolishG3474 thingsG3474 of 78the worldG2889 to shameG2617 the wiseG4680, and GodG2316 has chosenG1586 the weakG772 thingsG772 of 79the worldG2889 to shameG2617 the things whichG2478 are strongG2478, 28and the baseG36 thingsG36 of 80the worldG2889 and the despisedG1848 GodG2316 has chosenG1586, 81the things that are not, soG2443 that He may 82nullifyG2673 the things that are, 29soG3704 that 83noG3361G3956 84manG4561 may boastG2744 beforeG1799 GodG2316. 30But 85by His doing you are in 86ChristG5547 JesusG2424, whoG3739 becameG1096 to us 87wisdomG4678 from GodG2316, 88and 89righteousnessG1343 and 90sanctificationG38, and 91redemptionG629, 31soG2443 that, justG2531 as it is writtenG1125, “92Let him who boastsG2744, boastG2744 in the LordG2962.”
