Jonah’s Disobedience
1The wordH1697 of the LordH3068 cameH1961 to 1JonahH3124 the sonH1121 of AmittaiH573 sayingH559, 2“AriseH6965, goH1980 to 2NinevehH5210 the greatH1419 cityH5892 and 3cryH7121 againstH5921 it, for their 4wickednessH7463 has comeH5927 up beforeH6440 Me.” 3But JonahH3124 roseH6965 up to fleeH1272 to 5TarshishH8659 6from the presenceH6440 of the LordH3068. So he wentH3381 downH3381 to 7JoppaH3305, foundH4672 a shipH591 which was goingH935 to TarshishH8659, paidH5414 the fareH7939 and wentH3381 downH3381 into it to goH935 with them to TarshishH8659 from the presenceH6440 of the LordH3068.
4The 8LordH3068 hurledH2904 a greatH1419 windH7307 on the seaH3220 and there was a greatH1419 stormH5591 on the seaH3220 so that the shipH591 was about to 9breakH7665 up. 5Then the sailorsH4419 becameH3372 afraidH3372 and everyH376 manH376 criedH2199 to 10his godH430, and they 11threwH2904 the 12cargoH3627 whichH834 was in the shipH591 into the seaH3220 to lightenH7043 it 13for them. But JonahH3124 had goneH3381 belowH3381 into the holdH3411 of the shipH5600, lainH7901 downH7901 and fallenH7290 soundH7290 asleepH7290. 6So the captainH7227H2259 approachedH7126 him and saidH559, “HowH4100 is it that you are sleepingH7290? GetH6965 up, 14callH7121 on your godH430. PerhapsH194 your 15godH430 will be concernedH6245 about us so that we will not perishH6.”
7EachH376 manH376 saidH559 to his mateH7453, “ComeH1980, let us 16castH5307 lotsH1486 so we may 17learnH3045 on whoseH4310 accountH7945 thisH2088 calamityH7463 has struck us.” So they castH5307 lotsH1486 and the 18lotH1486 fellH5307 on JonahH3124. 8Then they saidH559 to him, “19TellH5046 us, nowH4994! On whoseH4310 account has thisH2088 calamityH7463 struck us? WhatH4100 is your 20occupationH4399? And whereH370 do you comeH935 from? WhatH4100 is your countryH776? From whatH335H2088 peopleH5971 are you?” 9He saidH559 to them, “I am a 21HebrewH5680, and I 22fearH3372 the LordH3068 23GodH430 of heavenH8064 whoH834 24madeH6213 the seaH3220 and the dryH3004 landH3004.”
10Then the menH376 becameH3372 extremelyH3374H1419 frightenedH3372 and they saidH559 to him, “25HowH4100 could you doH6213 thisH2088?” For the menH376 knewH3045 that he was 26fleeingH1272 from the presenceH6440 of the LordH3068, becauseH3588 he had toldH5046 them. 11So they saidH559 to him, “WhatH4100 should we doH6213 to you that the seaH3220 may becomeH8367 calmH8367 27for us?”--for the seaH3220 was becomingH1980 increasinglyH1980 stormyH5590. 12He saidH559 to them, “PickH5375 me up and throwH2904 me into the seaH3220. Then the seaH3220 will becomeH8367 calmH8367 28for you, for I knowH3045 that 29on accountH7945 of me thisH2088 greatH1419 stormH5591 has come upon you.” 13However, the menH376 30rowedH2864 desperately to returnH7725 to landH3004 but they couldH3201 not, for the seaH3220 was becomingH1980 even stormierH5590 againstH5921 them. 14Then they calledH7121 on the 31LordH3068 and saidH559, “We earnestlyH577 prayH577, OH577 LordH3068, do not let us perishH6 on account of thisH2088 man’sH376 lifeH5315 and do not putH5414 innocentH5355 bloodH1818 on us; for 32You, O LordH3068, have doneH6213 as You have pleasedH2654.”
15So they pickedH5375 up JonahH3124, threwH2904 him into the seaH3220, and the seaH3220 33stoppedH5975 its ragingH2197. 16Then the menH376 fearedH3372 the LordH3068 greatlyH1419, and they offeredH2076 a sacrificeH2077 to the LordH3068 and madeH5087 34vowsH5088.
1735And the LordH3068 appointedH4487 a greatH1419 fishH1709 to swallowH1104 JonahH3124, and JonahH3124 was in the 36stomachH4578 of the fishH1709 threeH7969 daysH3117 and threeH7969 nightsH3915.
