Israel’s History after the Exodus
1TheseH428 are the wordsH1697 whichH834 MosesH4872 spokeH1696 to allH3605 IsraelH3478 1acrossH5676 the JordanH3383 in the wildernessH4057, in the 2ArabahH6160 oppositeH4136 3SuphH5489, betweenH996 ParanH6290 and TophelH8603 and LabanH3837 and HazerothH2698 and DizahabH1774. 2It is elevenH259H6240 days’H3117 journey from 4HorebH2722 by the wayH1870 of MountH2022 5SeirH8165 to 6Kadesh-barneaH6947. 3In the 7fortiethH705 yearH8141, on the firstH259 day of the eleventhH6249H6240 monthH2320, MosesH4872 spokeH1696 to the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478, 8according to allH3605 that the LordH3068 had commandedH6680 him to give to them, 4afterH310 he had 910defeatedH5221 SihonH5511 the kingH4428 of the AmoritesH567, whoH834 livedH3427 in HeshbonH2809, and 11OgH5747 the kingH4428 of BashanH1316, whoH834 livedH3427 in 12AshtarothH6252 13and EdreiH154. 5AcrossH5676 the JordanH3383 in the landH776 of MoabH4124, MosesH4872 undertookH2974 to expoundH874 thisH2088 lawH8451, sayingH559,
6“The LordH3068 our GodH430 14spokeH1696 to us at HorebH2722, sayingH559, ‘You have 15stayedH3427 longH7227 enoughH7227 at thisH2088 mountainH2022. 7TurnH6437 and setH5265 your journeyH5265, and goH935 to 16the hillH2022 countryH2022 of the AmoritesH567, and to allH3605 their neighborsH7934 in the ArabahH6160, in the hillH2022 countryH2022 and in the lowlandH8219 and in 17the 18NegevH5045 and by the seacoastH3220H2348, the landH776 of the CanaanitesH3669, and LebanonH3844, as farH5704 as the greatH1419 riverH5104, the riverH5104 EuphratesH6578. 8SeeH7200, I have placedH5414 the landH776 beforeH6440 you; goH935 in and possessH3423 the landH776 whichH834 the LordH3068 19sworeH7650 to giveH5414 to your fathersH1, to AbrahamH85, to IsaacH3327, and to JacobH3290, to them and their 20descendantsH2233 afterH310 them.’
9“I spokeH559 to you at that timeH6256, sayingH559, ‘21I am not ableH3201 to bearH5375 the burden of you aloneH905. 10The LordH3068 your GodH430 has 22multipliedH7235 you, and beholdH2009, you are this dayH3117 like the starsH3556 of heavenH8064 in numberH7230. 11May the LordH3068, the GodH430 of your fathersH1, increaseH3254 you a thousand-foldH505H6471 moreH3254 than you are and blessH1288 you, 23justH3512 as He has 24promisedH1696 you! 12HowH351 can I aloneH905 bearH5375 the loadH2960 and burdenH4853 of you and your strifeH7379? 132526ChooseH3051 wiseH2450 and discerningH995 and experiencedH3045 menH376 from your tribesH7626, and I will appointH7760 them as your headsH7218.’ 14You answeredH6030 me and saidH559, ‘The thingH1697 whichH834 you have saidH1696 to doH6213 is goodH2896.’ 15So I tookH3947 the headsH7218 of your tribesH7626, wiseH2450 and experiencedH3045 menH376, and 27appointedH5414 them headsH7218 overH5921 you, leadersH8269 of thousandsH505 and 28of hundredsH3967, 29of fiftiesH2572 and 30of tensH6235, and officersH7860 for your tribesH7626.
16“Then I chargedH6680 your judgesH8199 at that timeH6256, sayingH559, ‘HearH8085 the cases betweenH996 your 31fellowH251 countrymenH251, and 32judgeH8199 righteouslyH6664 betweenH996 a manH376 and his 33fellowH251 countrymanH251, or the alienH1616 who is with him. 1734You shall not showH5234 partialityH5234H6440 in judgmentH4941; you shall hearH8085 the smallH6996 and the greatH1419 alike. You shall 35not fearH1481 36manH376, for the judgmentH4941 is God’sH430. 37The caseH1697 that is tooH4480 hardH7185 for you, you shall bringH7126 to me, and I will hearH8085 it.’ 1838I commandedH6680 you at that timeH6256 allH3605 the thingsH1697 that you should doH6213.
19“Then we setH5265 out from 39HorebH2722, and wentH1980 through allH3605 that 40greatH1419 and terribleH3372 wildernessH4057 whichH834 you sawH7200 on the wayH1870 to the 41hillH2022 countryH2022 of the AmoritesH567, justH3512 as the LordH3068 our GodH430 had commandedH6680 us; and we cameH935 to 42Kadesh-barneaH6947. 20I saidH559 to you, ‘You have comeH935 to the hillH2022 countryH2022 of the AmoritesH567 whichH834 the LordH3068 our GodH430 is about to giveH5414 us. 21SeeH7200, the LordH3068 your GodH430 has placedH5414 the landH776 beforeH6440 you; goH5927 up, takeH3423 possessionH3423, as the LordH3068, the GodH430 of your fathersH1, has spokenH1696 to you. 43Do not fearH3372 or be dismayedH2865.’
22“44Then allH3605 of you approachedH7126 me and saidH559, ‘Let us sendH7971 menH376 beforeH6440 us, that they may searchH2658 out the landH776 for us, and bringH7725 backH7725 to us wordH1697 of the wayH1870 by whichH834 we should goH5927 up and the citiesH5892 whichH834 we shall enterH935.’ 23The thingH1697 pleasedH3190H5869 me and I tookH3947 twelveH8147H6240 of your menH376, oneH259 manH376 for each tribeH7626. 2445They turnedH6437 and wentH5927 up into the hillH2022 countryH2022, and cameH935 to the valleyH5158 of EshcolH812 and spiedH7270 it out. 25Then they tookH3947 some of the fruitH6529 of the landH776 in their handsH3027 and broughtH3381 it downH3381 to us; and they broughtH7725 us backH7725 a reportH1697 and saidH559, ‘It is a goodH2896 landH776 whichH834 the LordH3068 our GodH430 is about to giveH5414 us.’
26“46Yet you were not willingH14 to goH5927 up, but 47rebelledH4784 againstH854 the 48commandH6310 of the LordH3068 your GodH430; 27and 49you grumbledH7279 in your tentsH168 and saidH559, ‘Because the LordH3068 hatesH8135 us, He has broughtH3318 us out of the landH776 of EgyptH4714 to deliverH5414 us into the handH3027 of the AmoritesH567 to destroyH8045 us. 28WhereH575 can we goH5927 up? Our brethrenH251 have made our heartsH3824 meltH4549, sayingH559, “The peopleH5971 are biggerH1419 and tallerH7311 thanH4480 we; the citiesH5892 are largeH1419 and fortifiedH1219 to heavenH8064. And besidesH1571, we sawH7200 50the sonsH1121 of the AnakimH6062 thereH8033.”’ 29Then I saidH559 to you, ‘Do not be shockedH6206, norH3808 fearH3372 them. 30The LordH3068 your GodH430 who goesH1980 beforeH6440 you will 51HimselfH1931 fightH3898 on your behalf, 52justH3605H834 as He didH6213 for you in EgyptH4714 before your eyesH5869, 31and in the wildernessH4057 whereH834 you sawH7200 howH834 53the LordH3068 your GodH430 carriedH5375 you, justH3512 as a manH376 carriesH5375 his sonH1121, in allH3605 the wayH1870 whichH834 you have walkedH1980 untilH5704 you cameH935 to thisH2088 placeH4725.’ 32But 5455for all thisH2088, you did not trustH539 the LordH3068 your GodH430, 3356who goesH1980 beforeH6440 you on your wayH1870, 57to seekH8446 out a placeH4725 for you to encampH2583, in fireH784 by nightH3915 and cloudH6051 by dayH3119, to showH7200 you the wayH1870 in whichH834 you should goH1980.
34“Then the LordH3068 heardH8085 the soundH6963 of your wordsH1697, and He was angryH7107 and 58tookH7650 an oathH7650, sayingH559, 35‘59Not oneH376 of theseH428 menH376, thisH2088 evilH7451 generationH1755, shall seeH7200 the goodH2896 landH776 whichH834 I sworeH7650 to giveH5414 your fathersH1, 36exceptH2108 CalebH3612 the sonH1121 of JephunnehH3312; he shall seeH7200 it, and 60to him and to his sonsH1121 I will giveH5414 the landH776 on whichH834 he has setH1869 footH1869, becauseH3282H834 he has followedH310 the LordH3068 fullyH4390.’ 3761The LordH3068 was angryH599 with me alsoH1571 on your accountH1558, sayingH559, ‘62Not evenH1571 you shall enterH935 thereH8033. 38JoshuaH3091 the sonH1121 of NunH5126, who standsH5975 beforeH6440 you, 63he shall enterH935 thereH8033; encourageH2388 him, for 64he will cause IsraelH3478 to inheritH5157 it. 39Moreover, 65your littleH2945 onesH2945 whoH834 you saidH559 would becomeH1961 a preyH957, and your sonsH1121, whoH834 this dayH3117 haveH3045 66noH3808 knowledgeH3045 of goodH2896 or evilH7451, shall enterH935 thereH8033, and I will giveH5414 it to them and they shall possessH3423 it. 40But as for you, 67turnH6437 around and setH5265 out for the wildernessH4057 by the wayH1870 to the 68RedH5488H3220 SeaH3220.’
41“69Then you saidH559 to me, ‘We have sinnedH2398 against the LordH3068; we will indeed goH5927 up and fightH3898, justH3605H834 as the LordH3068 our GodH430 commandedH6680 us.’ And everyH376 manH376 of you girdedH2296 on his weaponsH3627 of warH4421, and regardedH1951 it as easyH1951 to goH5927 up into the hillH2022 countryH2022. 4270And the LordH3068 saidH559 to me, ‘SayH559 to them, “Do not goH5927 up norH3808 fightH3898, for I am not amongH7130 you; otherwiseH3808 you will be 71defeatedH5062 beforeH6440 your enemiesH340.”’ 43So I spokeH1696 to you, but you would not listenH8085. Instead 72you rebelledH4784 againstH854 the 73commandH6310 of the LordH3068, and actedH2102 presumptuouslyH2102 and wentH5927 up into the hillH2022 countryH2022. 4474The AmoritesH567 who 75livedH3427 in that hillH2022 countryH2022 cameH3318 out againstH7122 you and chasedH7291 you 76as beesH1682 doH6213, and crushedH3807 you from SeirH8165 to HormahH2767. 45Then you returnedH7725 and weptH1058 beforeH6440 the LordH3068; but the 77LordH3068 did not listenH8085 to your voiceH6963 norH3808 giveH238 earH238 to you. 46So you remainedH3427 in 78KadeshH6946 manyH7227 daysH3117, 79the daysH3117 that you spentH3427 there.
