Matthew 15
New American Standard Bible 1995
Tradition and Commandment
11ThenG5119 some PhariseesG5330 and scribesG1122 cameG4334 to JesusG2424 2from JerusalemG2414 and saidG3004, 2“WhyG1223G5101 do Your disciplesG3101 breakG3845 the traditionG3862 of the eldersG4245? For they 3do not washG3538 their handsG5495 whenG3752 they eatG2068 breadG740.” 3And He answeredG611 and saidG3004 to them, “WhyG1223 do you yourselvesG4771 transgressG3845 the commandmentG1785 of GodG2316 for the sakeG1223 of your traditionG3862? 4For GodG2316 saidG3004, ‘4HonorG5091 your fatherG3962 and motherG3384,’ and, ‘5He who speaksG2551 evilG2551 of fatherG3962 orG2228 motherG3384 is to 6be putG5053 to deathG2288.’ 5But you sayG3004, ‘WhoeverG3739G302 saysG3004 to his fatherG3962 orG2228 motherG3384, “WhateverG3739G1437 I haveG1473 that would helpG5623 you has been 7givenG1435 to God,” 6he is not to honorG5091 his fatherG3962 orG2228 his motherG33848.’ And by this you invalidatedG208 the wordG3056 of GodG2316 for the sakeG1223 of your traditionG3862. 7You hypocritesG5273, rightlyG2573 did IsaiahG2268 prophesyG4395 of you:8‘9ThisG3778 peopleG2992 honorsG5091 Me with their lipsG5491, But their heartG2588 is farG4206 awayG568 from Me.9But in vainG3155 do they worshipG4576 Me, TeachingG1321 as 10doctrinesG1319 the preceptsG1778 of menG444.’”
10After Jesus calledG4341 the crowdG3793 to Him, He saidG3004 to them, “HearG191 and understandG4920. 1111It is not whatG3588 entersG1525 into the mouthG4750 that defilesG2840 the manG444, but whatG3588 proceedsG1607 out of the mouthG4750, thisG3778 defilesG2840 the manG444.”
12ThenG5119 the disciplesG3101 cameG4334 and saidG3004 to Him, “Do You knowG3609 that the PhariseesG5330 were 12offendedG4624 when they heardG191 thisG3588 statementG3056?” 13But He answeredG611 and saidG3004, “13EveryG3956 plantG5451 whichG3739 My heavenlyG3770 FatherG3962 did not plantG5452 shall be uprootedG1610. 14LetG863 them aloneG863; 14they are blindG5185 guidesG3595 15of the blindG5185. And 16ifG1437 a blindG5185 manG5185 guidesG3594 a blindG5185 manG5185, bothG297 will fallG4098 into a pitG999.”
The Heart of Man
15PeterG4074 17saidG3004 to Him, “18ExplainG5419 the parableG3850 to us.” 1619Jesus saidG3004, “Are you stillG188 lackingG801 in understandingG801 alsoG2532? 17Do you not understandG3539 that everythingG3956 that goesG1531 into the mouthG4750 passesG5562 into the stomachG2836, and is 20eliminatedG1519G856G1544? 18But 21the things that proceedG1607 out of the mouthG4750 comeG1831 from the heartG2588, and thoseG2548 defileG2840 the manG444. 1922For out of the heartG2588 comeG1831 evilG4190 thoughtsG1261, murdersG5408, adulteriesG3430, 23fornicationsG4202, theftsG2829, falseG5577 witnessG5577, slandersG988. 20TheseG3778 are the things which defileG2840 the manG444; but to eatG2068 with unwashedG449 handsG5495 does not defileG2840 the manG444.”
The Syrophoenician Woman
2124JesusG2424 wentG1831 awayG1831 from thereG1564, and withdrewG402 into the districtG3313 of 25TyreG5184 and 26SidonG4605. 22And a CanaaniteG5478 womanG1135 from that regionG3725 cameG1831 out and began to cryG2896 out, sayingG3004, “HaveG1653 mercyG1653 on me, LordG2962, 27SonG5207 of DavidG1160; my daughterG2364 is cruellyG2560 28demon-possessedG1139.” 23But He did not answerG611 her a wordG3056. And His disciplesG3101 cameG4334 and imploredG2065 Him, sayingG3004, “SendG630 her awayG630, becauseG3754 she keeps shoutingG2896 29at us.” 24But He answeredG611 and saidG3004, “I was sentG649 onlyG3756G1487G3361 to 30the lostG622 sheepG4263 of the houseG3624 of IsraelG2474.” 25But she cameG2064 and 31began 32to bowG4352 downG4352 beforeG4352 Him, sayingG3004, “LordG2962, helpG997 me!” 26And He answeredG611 and saidG3004, “It is not 33goodG2570 to takeG2983 the children’sG5043 breadG740 and throwG906 it to the dogsG2952.” 27But she saidG3004, “YesG3483, LordG2962; 34but evenG2532 the dogsG2952 feedG2068 on the crumbsG5589 which fallG4098 from their masters’G2962 tableG5132.” 28ThenG5119 JesusG2424 saidG3004 to her, “OG5599 womanG1135, 35your faithG4102 is greatG3173; it shall be doneG1096 for you as you wishG2309.” And her daughterG2364 was healedG2390 36at onceG1565G5610.
Healing Crowds
2937DepartingG3327 from thereG1564, JesusG2424 wentG2064 alongG3844 by 38the SeaG2281 of GalileeG1056, and having goneG305 up on the mountainG3735, He was sittingG2521 thereG1563. 30And 39largeG4183 crowdsG3793 cameG4334 to Him, bringingG2192 with them those who were lameG5560, crippledG2948, blindG5185, muteG2974, and manyG4183 othersG2087, and they laidG4496 them downG4496 at His feetG4228; and 40He healedG2323 them. 31SoG5620 the crowdG3793 marveledG2296 as they sawG991 the muteG2974 speakingG2980, the crippledG2948 41restoredG5199, and the lameG5560 walkingG4043, and the blindG5185 seeingG991; and they 42glorifiedG1392 the GodG2316 of IsraelG2474.
Four Thousand Fed
3243And JesusG2424 calledG4341 His disciplesG3101 to Him, and saidG3004, “44I feelG4697 compassionG4697 for the 45peopleG3793, becauseG3754 they 46have remainedG4357 with Me nowG2235 threeG5140 daysG2250 and haveG2192 nothingG3756G5100 to eatG2068; and I do not wantG2309 to sendG630 them awayG630 hungryG3523, for they might faintG1590 on the wayG3598.” 33The disciplesG3101 saidG3004 to Him, “WhereG4159 would we get soG5118 manyG5118 loavesG740 in this desolateG2047 placeG2047 to satisfyG5526 suchG5118 a largeG4183 crowdG3793?” 34And JesusG2424 saidG3004 to them, “HowG4214 manyG4214 loavesG740 do you haveG2192?” And they saidG3004, “SevenG2033, and a fewG3641 smallG2485 fishG2485.” 35And He directedG3853 the 47peopleG3793 to 48sitG377 downG377 on the groundG1093; 36and He tookG2983 the sevenG2033 loavesG740 and the fishG2486; and 49givingG2168 thanksG2168, He brokeG2806 them and started givingG1325 them to the disciplesG3101, and the disciplesG3101 gave them to the peopleG3793. 37And they allG3956 ateG2068 and were satisfiedG5526, and they pickedG142 up whatG3588 was leftG4052 overG4052 of the brokenG2801 piecesG2801, sevenG2033 largeG4711 50basketsG4711 fullG4134. 38And thoseG3588 who ateG2068 were fourG5070 thousandG5070 menG435, besidesG5565 womenG1135 and childrenG3813.
39And sendingG630 awayG630 the crowdsG3793, Jesus gotG1684 into 51the boatG4143 and cameG2064 to the regionG3725 of 52MagadanG3093.
