Judas’s Remorse

11NowG1161 when morningG4407 cameG1096, allG3956 the chiefG749 priestsG749 and the eldersG4245 of the peopleG2992 conferredG4824G2983 together againstG2596 JesusG2424 to putG2289 Him to deathG2289; 2and they boundG1210 Him, and ledG520 Him awayG520 and 2deliveredG3860 Him to 3PilateG4091 the governorG2232.

3ThenG5119 when 4JudasG2455, who had betrayedG3860 Him, sawG3708 that He had been condemnedG2632, he feltG3338 remorseG3338 and returnedG4762 5the thirtyG5144 6piecesG694 of silverG694 to the chiefG749 priestsG749 and eldersG4245, 4sayingG3004, “I have sinnedG264 by betrayingG3860 innocentG121 bloodG129.” But they saidG3004, “WhatG5101 is that to us? 7SeeG3708 to that yourselfG4771!” 5And he threwG4496 the piecesG694 of silverG694 into 8the templeG3485 sanctuaryG3485 and departedG402; and 9he wentG565 awayG565 and hangedG519 himself. 6The chiefG749 priestsG749 tookG2983 the piecesG694 of silverG694 and saidG3004, “It is not lawfulG1832 to putG906 them into the templeG2878 treasuryG2878, sinceG1893 it is the priceG5092 of bloodG129.” 7And they conferredG4824G2983 togetherG4824 and 10with the moneyG846 boughtG59 the Potter’sG2763 FieldG68 as a burialG5027 placeG5027 for strangersG3581. 811For thisG1352 reasonG1352 that fieldG68 has been calledG2564 the FieldG68 of BloodG129 to thisG4594 dayG4594. 9ThenG5119 that which was spokenG3004 throughG1223 JeremiahG2408 the prophetG4396 was fulfilledG4137: “12And 13they tookG2983 the thirtyG5144 piecesG694 of silverG694, the priceG5092 of the one whoseG3739 priceG5091 had been setG5091 by the sonsG5207 of IsraelG2474; 1014and 15they gaveG1325 them for the Potter’sG2763 FieldG68, as the LordG2962 directedG4929 me.”

Jesus before Pilate

1116NowG1161 JesusG2424 stoodG2476 beforeG1715 the governorG2232, and the governorG2232 questionedG1905 Him, sayingG3004, “Are You the 17KingG935 of the JewsG2453?” And JesusG2424 saidG5346 to him, “18It is as you sayG3004.” 12And whileG1722 He was being accusedG2723 by the chiefG749 priestsG749 and eldersG4245, 19He did not answerG611. 13ThenG5119 PilateG4091 saidG3004 to Him, “Do You not hearG191 howG4214 manyG4214 thingsG4214 they testifyG2649 againstG2649 You?” 14And 20He did not answerG611 him with regardG4314 to evenG3761 a single 21chargeG4487, soG5620 the governorG2232 was quiteG3029 amazedG2296.

1522NowG1161 at the feastG1859 the governorG2232 was accustomedG1486 to releaseG630 for the 23peopleG3793 any oneG1520 prisonerG1198 whomG3739 they wantedG2309. 16At that timeG5119 they were holdingG2192 a notoriousG1978 prisonerG1198, calledG3004 BarabbasG912. 17SoG3767 when the peopleG846 gatheredG4863 togetherG4863, PilateG4091 saidG3004 to them, “WhomG5101 do you wantG2309 me to releaseG630 for you? BarabbasG912, orG2228 JesusG2424 24who is calledG3004 ChristG5547?” 18For he knewG3609 that becauseG1223 of envyG5355 they had handedG3860 Him over.

1925While he was sittingG2521 on the judgmentG968 seatG968, his wifeG1135 sentG649 him a message, sayingG3004, “Have nothingG3367 to do with that 26righteousG1342 ManG1342; for 27lastG4594 nightG4594 I sufferedG3958 greatlyG4183 28in a dreamG3677 becauseG1223 of Him.” 20But the chiefG749 priestsG749 and the eldersG4245 persuadedG3982 the crowdsG3793 to 29askG154 for BarabbasG912 and to putG622 JesusG2424 to deathG622. 21But the governorG2232 30saidG3004 to them, “WhichG5101 of the twoG1417 do you wantG2309 me to releaseG630 for you?” And they saidG3004, “BarabbasG912.” 22PilateG4091 saidG3004 to them, “ThenG3767 whatG5101 shall I doG4160 with JesusG2424 31who is calledG3004 ChristG5547?” They allG3956 saidG3004, “32CrucifyG4717 Him!” 23And he saidG5346, “WhyG1063, whatG5101 evilG2556 has He doneG4160?” But they kept shoutingG2896 allG4057 the moreG4057, sayingG3004, “33CrucifyG4717 Him!”

24When PilateG4091 sawG3708 that he was accomplishingG5623 nothingG3762, but ratherG3123 that 34a riotG2351 was startingG1096, he tookG2983 waterG5204 and 35washedG633 his handsG5495 in frontG2713 of the crowdG3793, sayingG3004, “I amG1510 innocentG121 of 36thisG3778 Man’sG3778 bloodG129; 37seeG3708 to that yourselvesG4771.” 25And allG3956 the peopleG2992 saidG3004, “38His bloodG129 shall be on us and on our childrenG5043!” 26ThenG5119 he releasedG630 BarabbasG912 39for them; but after having JesusG2424 40scourgedG5417, he handedG3860 Him over to be crucifiedG4717.

Jesus Is Mocked

2741ThenG5119 the soldiersG4757 of the governorG2232 tookG3880 JesusG2424 into 42the 43PraetoriumG4232 and gatheredG4863 the wholeG3650 Roman 4445cohortG4686 aroundG1909 Him. 28They strippedG1562 Him and 46putG4060 a scarletG2847 robeG5511 on Him. 2947And after twistingG4120 together a crownG4735 of thornsG173, they putG2007 it on His headG2776, and a 48reedG2563 in His rightG1188 handG1188; and they kneltG1120 downG1120 beforeG1715 Him and mockedG1702 Him, sayingG3004, “49HailG5463, KingG935 of the JewsG2453!” 3050They spatG1716 on Him, and tookG2983 the reedG2563 and began to beatG5180 Him on the headG2776. 3151AfterG3753 they had mockedG1702 Him, they tookG1562 the scarlet robeG5511 offG1562 Him and putG1746 His own garmentsG2440 back on Him, and ledG520 Him awayG520 to crucifyG4717 Him.

3252As they were comingG1831 out, they foundG2147 a manG444 of 53CyreneG2956 namedG3686 SimonG4613, 54whomG3778 they pressedG29 into serviceG29 to bearG142 His crossG4716.

The Crucifixion

3355And when they cameG2064 to a placeG5117 calledG3004 56GolgothaG1115, whichG3739 meansG3004 PlaceG5117 of a SkullG2898, 3457they gaveG1325 Him 58wineG3631 to drinkG4095 mixedG3396 with gallG5521; and after tastingG1089 it, He was unwillingG3756G2309 to drinkG4095.

35And when they had crucifiedG4717 Him, 59they dividedG1266 up His garmentsG2440 amongG1266 themselves by castingG906 60lotsG2819. 36And sittingG2521 downG2521, they began to 61keepG5083 watchG5083 overG5083 Him thereG1563. 37And aboveG1883 His headG2776 they putG2007 up the chargeG156 againstG156 Him 62which readG1125, “63THISG3778 IS JESUSG2424 THE KINGG935 OF THE JEWSG2453.”

38At that timeG5119 twoG1417 robbersG3027 were crucifiedG4717 with Him, oneG1520 on the rightG1188 and oneG1520 on the leftG2176. 39And thoseG3588 passingG3899 by were 64hurlingG987 abuseG987 at Him, 65waggingG2795 their headsG2776 40and sayingG3004, “66You who are going to destroyG2647 the templeG3485 and rebuildG3618 it in threeG5140 daysG2250, saveG4982 YourselfG4572! 67IfG1487 You are the SonG5207 of GodG2316, comeG2597 downG2597 from the crossG4716.” 41In the sameG3668 wayG3668 the chiefG749 priestsG749 alsoG2532, along with the scribesG1122 and eldersG4245, were mockingG1702 Him and sayingG3004, 42“68He savedG4982 othersG243; 69He cannotG1410G3756 saveG4982 HimselfG1438. 70He is the KingG935 of IsraelG2474; let Him nowG3568 comeG2597 downG2597 from the crossG4716, and we will believeG4100 in Him. 4371He trustsG3982 in GodG2316; let GodG2316 rescueG4506 Him nowG3568, ifG1487 He 72delightsG2309 in Him; for He saidG3004, ‘I amG1510 the SonG5207 of GodG2316.’” 4473The robbersG3027 who had been crucifiedG4957 with Him were alsoG2532 insultingG3679 Him with the sameG846 words.

4574NowG1161 from the 75sixthG1623 hourG5610 darknessG4655 76fellG1096 upon allG3956 the landG1093 untilG2193 the 77ninthG1729 hourG5610. 46AboutG4012 the ninthG1729 hourG5610 JesusG2424 criedG310 out with a loudG3173 voiceG5456, sayingG3004, “78EliG2241, EliG2241, lamaG2982 sabachthaniG4518?” that is, “My GodG2316, My GodG2316, whyG2444 have You forsakenG1459 Me?” 47And someG5100 of thoseG3588 who were standingG2476 thereG1563, when they heardG191 it, began sayingG3004, “ThisG3778 manG3778 is callingG5455 for ElijahG2243.” 4879ImmediatelyG2112 oneG1520 of them ranG5143, and takingG2983 a spongeG4699, he filledG4092 it with sourG3690 wineG3690 and putG4060 it on a reedG2563, and gaveG4222 Him a drinkG4222. 49But the restG3062 of them saidG3004, “80LetG863 us seeG3708 whetherG1487 ElijahG2243 will comeG2064 to saveG4982 Him81.” 50And JesusG2424 82criedG2896 out againG3825 with a loudG3173 voiceG5456, and yieldedG863 up His spiritG4151. 5183And beholdG2400, 84the 85veilG2665 of the templeG3485 was tornG4977 in twoG1417 from topG509 to bottomG2736; and 86the earthG1093 shookG4579 and the rocksG4073 were splitG4977. 52The tombsG3419 were openedG455, and manyG4183 bodiesG4983 of the 87saintsG40 who had 88fallenG2837 asleepG2837 were raisedG1453; 53and comingG1831 out of the tombsG3419 afterG3326 His resurrectionG1454 they enteredG1525 89the holyG40 cityG4172 and appearedG1718 to manyG4183. 5490NowG1161 the centurionG1543, and thoseG3588 who were with him 91keepingG5083 guardG5083 overG5083 JesusG2424, when they sawG3708 92the earthquakeG4578 and the things that were happeningG1096, became veryG4970 frightenedG5399 and saidG3004, “TrulyG230 thisG3778 was 9394the SonG5207 of GodG2316!”

5595ManyG4183 womenG1135 were thereG1563 lookingG2334 on from a distanceG3113, whoG3748 had followedG190 JesusG2424 from GalileeG1056 while 9697ministeringG1247 to Him. 56AmongG1722 them was 98MaryG3137 MagdaleneG3094, and MaryG3137 the motherG3384 of JamesG2385 and JosephG2501, and 99the motherG3384 of the sonsG5207 of ZebedeeG2199.

Jesus Is Buried

57100When it was eveningG3798, there cameG2064 a richG4145 manG444 from ArimatheaG707, namedG5122 JosephG2501, whoG3739 himselfG846 had alsoG2532 becomeG3100 a discipleG3100 of JesusG2424. 58ThisG3778 manG3778 wentG4334 to PilateG4091 and askedG154 for the bodyG4983 of JesusG2424. ThenG5119 PilateG4091 orderedG2753 it to be givenG591 to him. 59And JosephG2501 tookG2983 the bodyG4983 and wrappedG1794 it in a cleanG2513 linenG4616 clothG4616, 60and laidG5087 it in his own newG2537 tombG3419, whichG3739 he had hewnG2998 out in the rockG4073; and he rolledG4351 101a largeG3173 stoneG3037 against the entranceG2374 of the tombG3419 and wentG565 awayG565. 61And 102MaryG3137 MagdaleneG3094 was thereG1563, and the otherG243 MaryG3137, sittingG2521 oppositeG561 the graveG5028.

62NowG1161 on the nextG1887 dayG1887, 103the dayG1887 afterG3326 104the preparationG3904, the chiefG749 priestsG749 and the PhariseesG5330 gatheredG4863 togetherG4863 with PilateG4091, 63and saidG3004, “SirG2962, we rememberG3403 that when He was stillG2089 aliveG2198 that deceiverG4108 saidG3004, ‘105AfterG3326 threeG5140 daysG2250 I am to riseG1453 againG1453.’ 64ThereforeG3767, giveG2753 ordersG2753 for the graveG5028 to be madeG805 secureG805 untilG2193 the thirdG5154 dayG2250, otherwiseG3379 His disciplesG3101 may comeG2064 and stealG2813 Him awayG2813 and sayG3004 to the peopleG2992, ‘He has risenG1453 from the deadG3498,’ and the lastG2078 deceptionG4106 will be worseG5501 than the firstG4413.” 65PilateG4091 saidG5346 to them, “You haveG2192 a 106guardG2892; goG5217, makeG805 it as secureG805 as you knowG3609 howG3609.” 66And they wentG4198 and madeG805 the graveG5028 secureG805, and along with 107the guardG2892 they setG4972 a 108sealG4972 on 109the stoneG3037.
