John’s Questions
11WhenG3753 JesusG2424 had finishedG5055 2givingG1299 instructionsG1299 to His twelveG1427 disciplesG3101, He departedG3327 from thereG1564 3to teachG1321 and 4preachG2784 in their citiesG4172.
25NowG1161 when 6JohnG2491, 7whileG1722 imprisonedG1201, heardG191 of the worksG2041 of ChristG5547, he sentG3992 word by his disciplesG3101 3and saidG3004 to Him, “Are You 8the 9ExpectedG2064 One, orG2228 shall we lookG4328 for someoneG2087 elseG2087?” 4JesusG2424 answeredG611 and saidG3004 to them, “GoG4198 and reportG518 to JohnG2491 whatG3739 you hearG191 and seeG991: 510the blindG5185 receiveG308 sightG308 and the lameG5560 walkG4043, the lepersG3015 are cleansedG2511 and the deafG2974 hearG191, the deadG3498 are raisedG1453 up, and the 11poorG4434 have the 12gospelG2097 preachedG2097 to them. 6And blessedG3107 is he 13whoG3739 14does not 15takeG4624 offenseG4624 at Me.”
Jesus’ Tribute to John
7As theseG3778 men were goingG4198 away, JesusG2424 beganG757 to speakG3004 to the crowdsG3793 aboutG4012 JohnG2491, “WhatG5101 did you goG1831 out into 16the wildernessG2048 to seeG2300? A reedG2563 shakenG4531 by the windG417? 817But whatG5101 did you goG1831 out to seeG3708? A manG444 dressedG294 in softG3120 clothing? ThoseG3588 who wearG5409 softG3120 clothing are in kings’G935 18palacesG3624! 919But whatG5101 did you goG1831 out to seeG3708? 20A prophetG4396? YesG3483, I tellG3004 you, and one who is moreG4053 than a prophetG4396. 10ThisG3778 is the one aboutG4012 whomG3739 it 21is writtenG1125, ‘22BeholdG2400, I sendG649 My messengerG32 23ahead of You, WhoG3739 will prepareG2680 Your wayG3598 beforeG1715 You.’ 11TrulyG281 I sayG3004 to you, amongG1722 those bornG1084 of womenG1135 there has not arisenG1453 anyone greaterG3173 than JohnG2491 the BaptistG910! YetG1161 the oneG3739 who is 24leastG3398 in the kingdomG932 of heavenG3772 is greaterG3173 than he. 1225From the daysG2250 of JohnG2491 the BaptistG910 untilG2193 nowG737 the kingdomG932 of heavenG3772 26suffersG971 violenceG971, and violentG973 menG973 27takeG726 it by forceG726. 13For allG3956 the prophetsG4396 and the LawG3551 prophesiedG4395 untilG2193 JohnG2491. 14And ifG1487 you are willingG2309 to acceptG1209 it, John himselfG846 is 28ElijahG2243 who 29was to comeG2064. 1530He who hasG2192 earsG3775 to hearG191, 31let him hearG191.
16“But to whatG5101 shall I compareG3666 thisG3778 generationG1074? It is likeG3664 childrenG3813 sittingG2521 in the marketG58 placesG58, whoG3739 callG4377 out to the otherG2087 children, 17and sayG3004, ‘We playedG832 the fluteG832 for you, and you did not danceG3738; we sangG2354 a dirgeG2354, and you did not 32mournG2875.’ 18For JohnG2491 cameG2064 neitherG3383 33eatingG2068 norG3383 34drinkingG4095, and they sayG3004, ‘35He hasG2192 a demonG1140!’ 19The SonG5207 of ManG444 cameG2064 eatingG2068 and drinkingG4095, and they sayG3004, ‘BeholdG2400, a gluttonousG5314 manG444 and a 36drunkardG3630, 37a friendG5384 of taxG5057 collectorsG5057 and 38sinnersG268!’ YetG2532 wisdomG4678 is vindicatedG1344 by her deedsG2041.”
The Unrepenting Cities
20ThenG5119 He beganG757 to denounceG3679 the citiesG4172 in whichG3739 mostG4183 of His 3940miraclesG1411 were doneG1096, becauseG3754 they did not repentG3340. 21“41WoeG3759 to you, ChorazinG5523! WoeG3759 to you, 42BethsaidaG966! For ifG1487 the 43miraclesG1411 had occurredG1096 in 44TyreG5184 and 45SidonG4605 which occurredG1096 in you, they would have repentedG3340 longG3819 agoG3819 in 4647sackclothG4526 and ashesG4700. 22NeverthelessG4133 I sayG3004 to you, 48it will be moreG414 tolerableG414 for TyreG5184 and SidonG4605 in 49the dayG2250 of judgmentG2920 thanG2228 for you. 23And you, 50CapernaumG2746, will not be exaltedG5312 to heavenG3772, will you? You will 51descendG2597 to 52HadesG86; for ifG1487 the 53miraclesG1411 had occurredG1096 in 54SodomG4670 which occurredG1096 in you, it would have remainedG3306 to thisG4594 dayG4594. 24NeverthelessG4133 I sayG3004 to you that 55it will be moreG414 tolerableG414 for the landG1093 of 56SodomG4670 in the dayG2250 of judgmentG2920, thanG2228 for you.”
Come to Me
2557At that 58timeG2540 JesusG2424 saidG3004, “I praiseG1843 You, 59FatherG3962, LordG2962 of heavenG3772 and earthG1093, that 60You have hiddenG2928 theseG3778 thingsG3778 from the wiseG4680 and intelligentG4908 and have revealedG601 them to infantsG3516. 26YesG3483, 61FatherG3962, for thisG3779 wayG3779 was well-pleasingG2107 in Your sightG1715. 2762AllG3956 thingsG3956 have been handedG3860 overG3860 to Me by My FatherG3962; and noG3762 oneG3762 knowsG1921 the SonG5207 exceptG1508 the FatherG3962; norG3761 does anyoneG5100 knowG1921 the FatherG3962 63exceptG1508 the SonG5207, and anyone to whomG3739 the SonG5207 willsG1014 to revealG601 Him.
28“64ComeG1205 to Me, allG3956 65who are wearyG2872 and heavy-ladenG5412, and I will giveG373 you restG373. 29TakeG142 My yokeG2218 upon you and 66learnG3129 from Me, for I amG1510 gentleG4239 and humbleG5011 in heartG2588, and 67you will findG2147 restG372 for your soulsG5590. 30For 68My yokeG2218 is 69easyG5543 and My burdenG5413 is lightG1645.”
