Elkanah and His Wives

1Now thereH8033 was a certainH259 manH376 from 1Ramathaim-zophimH7436 from the 2hillH2022 countryH2022 of EphraimH669, and his nameH8034 was 3ElkanahH511 the sonH1121 of JerohamH3395, the sonH1121 of ElihuH453, the sonH1121 of TohuH8459, the sonH1121 of ZuphH6689, an EphraimiteH673. 2He had 4twoH8147 wivesH802: the nameH8034 of oneH259 was 5HannahH2584 and the nameH8034 of the otherH8145 PeninnahH6444; and PeninnahH6444 hadH1961 childrenH3206, but HannahH2584 hadH369 noH369 childrenH3206.

3Now thisH1931 manH376 would goH5927 up from his cityH5892 6yearlyH3117 7to worshipH7812 and to sacrificeH2076 to the LordH3068 of hostsH6635 in 8ShilohH7887. And the twoH8147 sonsH1121 of EliH5941, HophniH2652 and PhinehasH6372, were priestsH3548 to the LordH3068 thereH8033. 4When the dayH3117 cameH1961 that ElkanahH511 sacrificedH2076, he 9would giveH5414 portionsH4490 to PeninnahH6444 his wifeH802 and to allH3605 her sonsH1121 and her daughtersH1323; 5but to HannahH2584 he would giveH5414 a doubleH639 portionH4490, for he lovedH157 HannahH2584, 10but the LordH3068 had closedH5462 her wombH7358. 6Her rivalH6869, however, 11would provokeH3707 her bitterlyH1571H3708 to irritateH7481 her, becauseH3588 the LordH3068 had closedH5462 her wombH7358. 7It happenedH6213 yearH8141 after yearH8141, as oftenH1767 as she wentH5927 up to the houseH1004 of the LordH3068, she would provokeH3707 her; so she weptH1058 and would not eatH398. 8Then ElkanahH511 her husbandH376 saidH559 to her, “HannahH2584, whyH4100 do you weepH1058 and whyH4100 do you not eatH398 and whyH4100 is your heartH3824 sadH7489? 12Am I not betterH2896 to you thanH4480 tenH6235 sonsH1121?”

9Then HannahH2584 roseH6965 afterH310 eatingH398 and drinkingH8354 in ShilohH7887. Now EliH5941 the priestH3548 was sittingH3427 on the seatH3678 by the doorpostH4201 of 13the templeH1964 of the LordH3068. 10She, 14greatlyH4751 distressedH4751, prayedH6419 to the LordH3068 and weptH1058 bitterlyH1058. 11She 15madeH5087 a vowH5088 and saidH559, “O LordH3068 of hostsH6635, ifH518 You will indeedH7200 16lookH7200 on the afflictionH6040 of Your maidservantH519 and rememberH2142 me, and not forgetH7911 Your maidservantH519, but will giveH5414 Your maidservantH519 a 17sonH2233H376, then I will giveH5414 him to the LordH3068 allH3605 the daysH3117 of his lifeH2425, and 18a razorH4177 shall neverH3808 comeH5927 on his headH7218.”

12Now it cameH1961 about, as she 19continuedH7235 prayingH6419 beforeH6440 the LordH3068, that EliH5941 was watchingH8104 her mouthH6310. 13As for HannahH2584, 20she was speakingH1696 in her heartH3820, onlyH7534 her lipsH8193 were movingH5128, but her voiceH6963 was not heardH8085. So EliH5941 thoughtH2803 she was drunkH7910. 14Then EliH5941 saidH559 to her, “21HowH4970 longH5704H4970 will you makeH7937 yourself drunkH7937? PutH5493 awayH5493 your wineH3196 from you.” 15But HannahH2584 repliedH6030, “NoH369, my lordH113, I am a womanH802 22oppressedH7186 in spiritH7307; I have drunkH8354 neitherH3808 wineH3196 norH3808 strongH7941 drinkH7941, but I 23have pouredH8210 out my soulH5315 beforeH6440 the LordH3068. 16Do not 24considerH5414 your maidservantH519 as a worthlessH1100 womanH1323, for I have spokenH1696 untilH5704 nowH2008 out of my greatH7230 concernH7879 and 25provocationH3708.” 17Then EliH5941 answeredH6030 and saidH559, “26GoH1980 in peaceH7965; and may the GodH430 of IsraelH3478 27grantH5414 your petitionH7596 that you have askedH7592 of Him.” 18She saidH559, “28Let your maidservantH8198 findH4672 favorH2580 in your sightH5869.” So the womanH802 wentH1980 her wayH1870 and ateH398, and 29her faceH6440 was noH3808 longerH5750 sad.

Samuel Is Born to Hannah

19Then they aroseH7925 earlyH7925 in the morningH1242 and worshipedH7812 beforeH6440 the LordH3068, and returnedH7725H935 againH7725 to their houseH1004 in 30RamahH7414. And ElkanahH511 31hadH3045 relationsH3045 with HannahH2584 his wifeH802, and 32the LordH3068 rememberedH2142 her. 20It cameH1961 about 33in dueH8622 timeH3117, after HannahH2584 had conceivedH2029, that she gaveH3205 birthH3205 to a sonH1121; and she namedH7121H8034 him SamuelH8050, saying, “34BecauseH3588 I have askedH7592 him of the LordH3068.”

21Then the manH376 ElkanahH511 35wentH5927 up with allH3605 his householdH1004 to offerH2076 to the LordH3068 the yearlyH3117 sacrificeH2077 and pay his vowH5088. 22But HannahH2584 did not goH5927 up, for she saidH559 to her husbandH376, “I will not go up untilH5704 the childH5288 is weanedH1580; then I will 36bringH935 him, that he may appearH7200 beforeH6440 the LordH3068 and 37stayH3427 thereH8033 foreverH5704H5769.” 2338ElkanahH511 her husbandH376 saidH559 to her, “DoH6213 whatH2896 seems bestH2896 39to you. RemainH3427 untilH5704 you have weanedH1580 him; onlyH389 40may the LordH3068 confirmH6965 His wordH1697.” So the womanH802 remainedH3427 and nursedH3243 her sonH1121 untilH5704 she weanedH1580 him. 24Now whenH3512 she had weanedH1580 him, 41she tookH5927 him up with her, with a three-year-oldH7969 bullH6499 and oneH259 ephahH374 of flourH7058 and a jugH5035 of wineH3196, and broughtH935 him to 42the houseH1004 of the LordH3068 in ShilohH7887, although the childH5288 was youngH5288. 25Then 43they slaughteredH7819 the bullH6499, and 44broughtH935 the boyH5288 to EliH5941. 26She saidH559, “OhH994, my lordH113! 45As your soulH5315 livesH2416, my lordH113, I am the womanH802 who stoodH5324 hereH2088 besideH5973 you, prayingH6419 to the LordH3068. 2746For thisH2088 boyH5288 I prayedH6419, and the LordH3068 has givenH5414 me my petitionH7596 whichH834 I askedH7592 of Him. 2847So I have alsoH1571 48dedicatedH7592 him to the LordH3068; as longH3605H3117 as he livesH1961 he is 49dedicatedH7592 to the LordH3068.” And 50he worshipedH7812 the LordH3068 thereH8033.
