John 12

Mary Anoints Jesus

11Jesus, therefore, six days before 2the Passover, came to 3Bethany where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2So they made Him a supper there, and 4Martha was serving; but Lazarus was one of those reclining at the table with Him. 35Mary then took a 6pound of very costly 7perfume of pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4But 8Judas Iscariot, one of His disciples, who was intending to 9betray Him, said, 5“Why was this perfume not sold for 10three hundred denarii and given to poor people?” 6Now he said this, not because he was concerned about the poor, but because he was a thief, and as he 11had the money box, he used to pilfer 12what was put into it. 7Therefore Jesus said, “Let her alone, so that she may keep 13it for 14the day of My burial. 815For you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have Me.”

9The 16large crowd of the Jews then learned that He was there; and they came, not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might also see Lazarus, 17whom He raised from the dead. 10But the chief priests planned to put Lazarus to death also; 11because 18on account of him 19many of the Jews were going away and were believing in Jesus.

Jesus Enters Jerusalem

12On the next day 20the large crowd who had come to 21the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13took the branches of the palm trees and went out to meet Him, and began to shout, “22Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, even the 23King of Israel.” 14Jesus, finding a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written, 15“24Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your King is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.” 1625These things His disciples did not understand at the first; but when Jesus 26was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written of Him, and that they had done these things to Him. 17So 27the 28people, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead, continued to testify about Him. 1829For this reason also the 30people went and met Him, 31because they heard that He had performed this 32sign. 19So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are not doing any good; look, the world has gone after Him.”

Greeks Seek Jesus

20Now there were some 33Greeks among those who were going up to worship at 34the feast; 21these then came to 35Philip, who was from 36Bethsaida of Galilee, and began to ask him, saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” 22Philip came and told 37Andrew; Andrew and Philip came and told Jesus. 23And Jesus answered them, saying, “38The hour has come for the Son of Man to 39be glorified. 24Truly, truly, I say to you, 40unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 2541He who loves his 42life loses it, and he who 43hates his 44life in this world will keep it to life eternal. 26If anyone 45serves Me, he must follow Me; and 46where I am, there My servant will be also; if anyone 47serves Me, the Father will 48honor him.

Jesus Foretells His Death

27“49Now My soul has become troubled; and what shall I say, ‘50Father, save Me from 51this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour. 2852Father, glorify Your name.” Then a 53voice came out of heaven: “I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.” 29So the crowd of people who stood by and heard it were saying that it had thundered; others were saying, “54An angel has spoken to Him.” 30Jesus answered and said, “55This voice has not come for My sake, but for your sakes. 3156Now judgment is upon this world; now 57the ruler of this world will be cast out. 32And I, if I 58am lifted up from the earth, will 59draw all men to Myself.” 33But He was saying this 60to indicate the kind of death by which He was to die. 34The crowd then answered Him, “We have heard out of 61the Law that 6263the Christ is to remain forever; and how can You say, ‘The 64Son of Man must be 65lifted up’? Who is this 66Son of Man?” 35So Jesus said to them, “67For a little while longer 68the Light is among you. 69Walk while you have the Light, so that darkness will not overtake you; he who 70walks in the darkness does not know where he goes. 36While you have the Light, 71believe in the Light, so that you may become 72sons of Light.”

These things Jesus spoke, and He went away and 7374hid Himself from them. 37But though He had performed so many 75signs before them, yet they were not believing in Him. 38This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet which he spoke: “76Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” 39For this reason they could not believe, for Isaiah said again, 40“77He has blinded their eyes and He 78hardened their heart, so that they would not see with their eyes and perceive with their heart, and 79be converted and I heal them.” 41These things Isaiah said because 80he saw His glory, and 81he spoke of Him. 42Nevertheless 82many even of 83the rulers believed in Him, but 84because of the Pharisees they were not confessing Him, for fear that they would be 8586put out of the synagogue; 4387for they loved the 88approval of men rather than the 89approval of God.

44And Jesus cried out and said, “90He who believes in Me, does not believe in Me but in Him who sent Me. 4591He who sees Me sees the One who sent Me. 4692I have come as Light into the world, so that everyone who believes in Me will not remain in darkness. 47If anyone hears My sayings and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for 93I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. 4894He who rejects Me and does not receive My sayings, has one who judges him; 95the word I spoke is what will judge him at 96the last day. 4997For I did not speak 98on My own initiative, but the Father Himself who sent Me 99has given Me a commandment as to what to say and what to speak. 50I know that 100His commandment is eternal life; therefore the things I speak, I speak 101just as the Father has told Me.”
