Jerusalem Is Captured
1Now it cameH1961 about afterH310 the deathH4194 of JoshuaH3091 that the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 1inquiredH7592 of the LordH3068, sayingH559, “WhoH4310 shall goH5927 up firstH8462 for us 2againstH413 the CanaanitesH3669, to fightH3898 against them?” 2The LordH3068 saidH559, “3JudahH3063 shall goH5927 up; beholdH2009, I have givenH5414 the landH776 into his handH3027.” 3Then JudahH3063 saidH559 to SimeonH8095 his brotherH251, “ComeH5927 up with me into 4the territoryH1486 allottedH1486 me, that we may fightH3898 against the CanaanitesH3669; and 5I in turnH1571 will goH1980 with you into 6the territoryH1486 allottedH1486 you.” So SimeonH8095 wentH1980 with him. 4JudahH3063 wentH5927 up, and 7the LordH3068 gaveH5414 the CanaanitesH3669 and the PerizzitesH6522 into their handsH3027, and they 8defeatedH5221 tenH6235 thousandH505 menH376 at BezekH966. 5They foundH4672 Adoni-bezekH137 in BezekH966 and foughtH3898 against him, and they 9defeatedH5221 the CanaanitesH3669 and the PerizzitesH6522. 6But Adoni-bezekH137 fledH5127; and they pursuedH7291 him and caughtH270 him and cutH7112 offH7112 his 10thumbsH931 and bigH931 toesH931H7272. 7Adoni-bezekH137 saidH559, “SeventyH7657 kingsH4428 with their thumbsH931 and their bigH931 toesH931H7272 cutH7112 offH7112 used to gatherH3950 up scraps underH8478 my tableH7979; 11as I have doneH6213, soH3651 GodH430 has repaidH7999 me.” So they broughtH935 him to JerusalemH3389 and he diedH4191 thereH8033.
8Then the sonsH1121 of JudahH3063 foughtH3898 against 12JerusalemH3389 and capturedH3920 it and struckH5221 it with the edgeH6310 of the swordH2719 and setH7971 the cityH5892 on fireH784. 9AfterwardH310 the sonsH1121 of JudahH3063 wentH3381 downH3381 to fightH3898 against the CanaanitesH3669 livingH3427 in the hillH2022 countryH2022 and in the 13NegevH5045 and in the lowlandH8219. 1014So JudahH3063 wentH1980 againstH413 the CanaanitesH3669 who livedH3427 in HebronH2275 (now the nameH8034 of HebronH2275 formerlyH6440 was Kiriath-arbaH7153); and they struckH5221 SheshaiH8344 and AhimanH289 and TalmaiH8526.
Capture of Other Cities
11Then 15from thereH8033 he wentH1980 againstH413 the inhabitantsH3427 of DebirH1688 (now the nameH8034 of DebirH1688 formerlyH6440 was Kiriath-sepherH7158). 12And CalebH3612 saidH559, “The one whoH834 attacksH5221 Kiriath-sepherH7158 and capturesH3920 it, I will even giveH5414 him my daughterH1323 AchsahH5915 for a wifeH802.” 1316OthnielH6274 the sonH1121 of KenazH7073, Caleb’sH3612 youngerH6996 brotherH251, capturedH3920 it; so he gaveH5414 him his daughterH1323 AchsahH5915 for a wifeH802. 14Then 17it cameH1961 about when she cameH935 to him, that she persuadedH5496 him to askH7592 her fatherH1 for a fieldH7704. Then she alightedH6795 from 18her donkeyH2543, and CalebH3612 saidH559 to her, “WhatH4100 19do you want?” 15She saidH559 to him, “GiveH3051 me a blessingH1293, sinceH3588 you have givenH5414 me the landH776 of the 20NegevH5045, giveH5414 me also springsH1543 of waterH4325.” So CalebH3612 gaveH5414 her the upperH5942 springsH1543 and the lowerH8482 springsH1543.
16The 21descendantsH1121 of 22the KeniteH7017, Moses’H4872 father-in-lawH2860, wentH5927 up from the 23cityH5892 of palmsH8558 with the sonsH1121 of JudahH3063, to the wildernessH4057 of JudahH3063 whichH834 is in the southH5045 of 24AradH6166; and they wentH1980 and livedH3427 with the peopleH5971. 17Then JudahH3063 wentH1980 with SimeonH8095 his brotherH251, and they struckH5221 the CanaanitesH3669 livingH3427 in ZephathH6857, and utterlyH2763 destroyedH2763 it. So the nameH8034 of the cityH5892 was calledH7121 25HormahH2767. 18And JudahH3063 tookH3920 26GazaH5804 with its territoryH1366 and AshkelonH831 with its territoryH1366 and EkronH6138 with its territoryH1366. 19Now the LordH3068 was with JudahH3063, and they tookH3423 possessionH3423 of the hillH2022 countryH2022; but they could not 27driveH3423 out the inhabitantsH3427 of the valleyH6010 becauseH3588 they had 28ironH1270 chariotsH7393. 20Then they gaveH5414 HebronH2275 to CalebH3612, 29as MosesH4872 had 30promisedH1696; and he droveH3423 out from thereH8033 31the threeH7969 sonsH1121 of AnakH6061. 2132But the sonsH1121 of BenjaminH1144 did not driveH3423 out the 33JebusitesH2983 who livedH3427 in JerusalemH3389; so the JebusitesH2983 have livedH3427 with the sonsH1121 of BenjaminH1144 in JerusalemH3389 to thisH2088 dayH3117.
22Likewise the houseH1004 of JosephH3130 wentH5927 up against BethelH1008, and the LordH3068 was with them. 23The houseH1004 of JosephH3130 spiedH8446 out BethelH1008 (34now the nameH8034 of the cityH5892 was formerlyH6440 LuzH3870). 24The spiesH8104 sawH7200 a manH376 comingH3318 out of the cityH5892 and they saidH559 to him, “PleaseH4994 showH7200 us the entranceH3996 to the cityH5892 and 35we will treatH6213 you kindlyH2617.” 25So he showedH7200 them the entranceH3996 to the cityH5892, and they struckH5221 the cityH5892 with the edgeH6310 of the swordH2719, 36but they letH7971 the manH376 and allH3605 his familyH4940 goH7971 freeH7971. 26The manH376 wentH1980 into the landH776 of the HittitesH2850 and builtH1129 a cityH5892 and namedH7121H8034 it LuzH3870 37whichH1931 is its nameH8034 to thisH2088 dayH3117.
Places Not Conquered
2738But ManassehH4519 did not takeH3423 possessionH3423 of Beth-sheanH1052 and its villagesH1323, or TaanachH8590 and its villagesH1323, or the inhabitantsH3427 of DorH1756 and its villagesH1323, or the inhabitantsH3427 of IbleamH2991 and its villagesH1323, or the inhabitantsH3427 of MegiddoH4023 and its villagesH1323; so 39the CanaanitesH3669 persistedH2974 in livingH3427 in that landH776. 28It cameH1961 about whenH3588 IsraelH3478 becameH2388 strongH2388, that they putH7760 the CanaanitesH3669 to forcedH4522 laborH4522, but they did not driveH3423 them out completelyH3423.
2940EphraimH669 did not driveH3423 out the CanaanitesH3669 who were livingH3427 in GezerH1507; so the CanaanitesH3669 livedH3427 in GezerH1507 amongH7130 them.
30ZebulunH2074 did not driveH3423 out the inhabitantsH3427 of KitronH7003, or the inhabitantsH3427 of 41NahalolH5096; so the CanaanitesH3669 livedH3427 amongH7130 them and becameH1961 subject to forcedH4522 laborH4522.
31AsherH836 did not driveH3423 out the inhabitantsH3427 of AccoH5910, or the inhabitantsH3427 of SidonH6721, or of AhlabH303, or of AchzibH392, or of HelbahH2462, or of AphikH663, or of RehobH7340. 32So the AsheritesH843 livedH3427 amongH7130 the CanaanitesH3669, the inhabitantsH3427 of the landH776; for they did not driveH3423 them out.
33NaphtaliH5321 did not driveH3423 out the inhabitantsH3427 of Beth-shemeshH1053, or the inhabitantsH3427 of Beth-anathH1043, but livedH3427 amongH7130 the CanaanitesH3669, the inhabitantsH3427 of the landH776; and the inhabitantsH3427 of Beth-shemeshH1053 and Beth-anathH1043 becameH1961 forcedH4522 laborH4522 for them.
34Then the AmoritesH567 42forcedH3905 the sonsH1121 of DanH1835 into the hillH2022 countryH2022, for they did not allowH5414 them to comeH3381 downH3381 to the valleyH6010; 35yet the AmoritesH567 persistedH2974 in 43livingH3427 in MountH2022 HeresH2776, in AijalonH357 and in ShaalbimH8169; but when the 44powerH3027 of the houseH1004 of JosephH3130 45grewH3513 strongH3513, they becameH1961 forcedH4522 laborH4522. 36The borderH1366 of the AmoritesH567 ran from the 46ascentH4610 of AkrabbimH4610, from SelaH5554 and upwardH4605.
