2 Samuel 1

David Learns of Saul’s Death

1Now it cameH1961 about afterH310 1the deathH4194 of SaulH7586, when DavidH1732 had returnedH7725 from 2the slaughterH5221 of the AmalekitesH6002, that DavidH1732 remainedH3427 twoH8147 daysH3117 in ZiklagH6860. 2On the thirdH7992 dayH3117, beholdH2009, 3a manH376 cameH935 out of the campH4264 from SaulH7586, 4with his clothesH899 tornH7167 and 5dustH127 on his headH7218. And it cameH1961 about when he cameH935 to DavidH1732 that 6he fellH5307 to the groundH776 and prostratedH7812 himself. 3Then DavidH1732 saidH559 to him, “From whereH335 do you comeH935?” And he saidH559 to him, “I have escapedH4422 from the campH4264 of IsraelH3478.” 4DavidH1732 saidH559 to him, “7HowH4100 did thingsH1697 goH1961? PleaseH4994 tellH5046 me.” And he saidH559, “The peopleH5971 have fledH5127 from the battleH4421, and alsoH1571 manyH7235 of the peopleH5971 have fallenH5307 and are deadH4191; and SaulH7586 and JonathanH3083 his sonH1121 are deadH4191 alsoH1571.” 5So DavidH1732 saidH559 to the youngH5288 manH5288 who toldH5046 him, “HowH349 do you knowH3045 that SaulH7586 and his sonH1121 JonathanH3083 are deadH4191?” 6The youngH5288 manH5288 who toldH5046 him saidH559, “By chanceH7122 I happenedH7136 to be on 8MountH2022 GilboaH1533, and beholdH2009, 9SaulH7586 was leaningH8172 on his spearH2595. And beholdH2009, the chariotsH7393 and the horsemenH6571 pursuedH1692 him closelyH1692. 7When he lookedH6437 behindH310 him, he sawH7200 me and calledH7121 to me. And I saidH559, ‘HereH2009 I am.’ 8He saidH559 to me, ‘WhoH4310 are you?’ And I 10answeredH559 him, ‘11I am an AmalekiteH6003.’ 9Then he saidH559 to me, ‘PleaseH4994 standH5975 besideH5921 me and killH4191 me, for agonyH7661 has seizedH270 me becauseH3588 my 12lifeH5315 stillH5750 lingers in me.’ 10So I stoodH5975 besideH5921 him 13and killedH4191 him, becauseH3588 I knewH3045 that he could not liveH2421 afterH310 he had fallenH5307. And 14I tookH3947 the crownH5145 whichH834 was on his headH7218 and the braceletH685 whichH834 was on his armH2220, and I have broughtH935 them hereH2008 to my lordH113.”

11Then 15DavidH1732 tookH2388 holdH2388 of his clothesH899 and toreH7167 them, and so alsoH1571 did allH3605 the menH376 whoH834 were with him. 12They mournedH5594 and weptH1058 and 16fastedH6684 untilH5704 eveningH6153 for SaulH7586 and his sonH1121 JonathanH3083 and for the peopleH5971 of the LordH3068 and the houseH1004 of IsraelH3478, becauseH3588 they had fallenH5307 by the swordH2719. 13DavidH1732 saidH559 to the youngH5288 manH5288 who toldH5046 him, “WhereH335 are you from?” And he 17answeredH559, “18I am the sonH1121 of an alienH1616, an AmalekiteH6003.” 14Then DavidH1732 saidH559 to him, “HowH349 is it you were not afraidH3372 19to stretchH7971 out your handH3027 to destroyH7843 the Lord’sH3068 anointedH4899?” 15And DavidH1732 calledH7121 oneH259 of the youngH5288 menH5288 and saidH559, “GoH5066, 20cutH6293 him downH6293.” 21So he struckH5221 him and he diedH4191. 16DavidH1732 saidH559 to him, “22Your bloodH1818 is on your headH7218, for 23your mouthH6310 has testifiedH6030 against you, sayingH559, ‘I have killedH4191 the Lord’sH3068 anointedH4899.’”

David’s Dirge for Saul and Jonathan

17Then DavidH1732 24chantedH6969 with thisH2088 lamentH7015 overH5921 SaulH7586 and JonathanH3083 his sonH1121, 18and he toldH559 them to teachH3925 the sonsH1121 of JudahH3063 the song of the bowH7198; beholdH2009, it is writtenH3789 in 25the bookH5612 of JasharH3477.19“26Your beautyH6643, O IsraelH3478, is slainH2491 on your highH1116 placesH1116! 27HowH349 have the mightyH1368 fallenH5307!2028TellH5046 it not in GathH1661, ProclaimH1319 it not in the streetsH2351 of AshkelonH831, OrH6435 29the daughtersH1323 of the PhilistinesH6430 will rejoiceH8055, The daughtersH1323 of 30the uncircumcisedH6189 will exultH5937.2131O mountainsH2022 of GilboaH1533, 32Let not dewH2919 or rainH4306 be on you, norH408 fieldsH7704 of offeringsH8641; For thereH8033 the shieldH4043 of the mightyH1368 was defiledH1602, The shieldH4043 of SaulH7586, not 33anointedH4899 with oilH8081.2234From the bloodH1818 of the slainH2491, from the fatH2459 of the mightyH1368, 35The bowH7198 of JonathanH3083 did not turnH5472 backH268, And the swordH2719 of SaulH7586 did not returnH7725 emptyH7387.23SaulH7586 and JonathanH3083, belovedH157 and pleasantH5273 in their lifeH2425, And in their deathH4194 they were not partedH6504; 36They were swifterH7043 thanH4480 eaglesH5404, 37They were strongerH1396 thanH4480 lionsH738.24O daughtersH1323 of IsraelH3478, weepH1058 overH413 SaulH7586, Who clothedH3847 you luxuriouslyH5730 in scarletH8144, Who putH5927 ornamentsH5716 of goldH2091 on your apparelH3830.2538HowH349 have the mightyH1368 fallenH5307 in the midstH8432 of the battleH4421! JonathanH3083 is slainH2491 on your highH1116 placesH1116.26I am distressedH6887 for you, my brotherH251 JonathanH3083; You have been veryH3966 pleasantH5276 to me. 39Your loveH160 to me was moreH4480 wonderfulH6381 ThanH4480 the loveH160 of womenH802.2740HowH349 have the mightyH1368 fallenH5307, And 41the weaponsH3627 of warH4421 perishedH6!”
