Isaiah Chapter 1

New American Standard Bible 1995

Rebellion of God’s People

1The visionH2377 of IsaiahH3470 the sonH1121 of AmozH531 concerningH5921 1JudahH3063 and JerusalemH3389, whichH834 he sawH2372 during the 2reignsH3117 of 3UzziahH5818, 4JothamH3147, 5AhazH271 and 6HezekiahH2396, kingsH4428 of JudahH3063.27ListenH8085, O heavensH8064, and hearH238, O 8earthH776; For the LordH3068 speaksH1696, “9SonsH1121 I have rearedH1431 and broughtH7311 up, But they have 10revoltedH6586 against Me.3An oxH7794 knowsH3045 its ownerH7069, And a donkeyH2543 its master’sH1167 mangerH18, But IsraelH3478 11does not knowH3045, My peopleH5971 12do not understandH995.”

4AlasH1945, sinfulH2398 nationH1471, PeopleH5971 weighedH3515 downH3515 with iniquityH5771, 1314OffspringH2233 of evildoersH7489, SonsH1121 who 15actH7843 corruptlyH7843! They have 16abandonedH5800 the LordH3068, They have 17despisedH5006 the HolyH6918 OneH6918 of IsraelH3478, They have turnedH2114 awayH2114 18from Him.

5WhereH5921H4100 will you be strickenH5221 againH5750, As you 19continueH3254 in your rebellionH5627? The wholeH3605 headH7218 is 20sickH2483 And the wholeH3605 heartH3824 is faintH1742.621From the soleH3709 of the footH7272 even to the headH7218 ThereH369 is 22nothingH369 soundH4974 in it, Only bruisesH6482, weltsH2250 and rawH2961 woundsH4347, 23Not pressedH2115 out or bandagedH2280, NorH3808 softenedH7401 with oilH8081.

7Your 24landH776 is desolateH8077, Your citiesH5892 are burnedH8313 with fireH784, Your fieldsH127--strangersH2114 are devouringH398 them in your presenceH5048; It is desolationH8077, as overthrownH4114 by strangersH2114.8The daughterH1323 of ZionH6726 is leftH3498 like a shelterH5521 in a vineyardH3754, Like a watchman’sH4412 hutH4412 in a cucumberH4750 fieldH4750, like a besiegedH5341 cityH5892.925UnlessH3884 the LordH3068 of hostsH6635 Had leftH3498 us a fewH4592 26survivorsH8300, We would be like 27SodomH5467, We would be likeH1819 GomorrahH6017.

God Has Had Enough

10HearH8085 28the wordH1697 of the LordH3068, You rulersH7101 of 29SodomH5467; GiveH238 earH238 to the instructionH8451 of our GodH430, You peopleH5971 of GomorrahH6017.11“30WhatH4100 are your multipliedH7230 sacrificesH2077 to Me?” SaysH559 the LordH3068. “I 31have hadH7646 enoughH7646 of burntH5930 offeringsH5930 of ramsH352 And the fatH2459 of fedH4806 cattleH4806; And I takeH2654 noH3808 pleasureH2654 in the bloodH1818 of bullsH6499, lambsH3532 or goatsH6260.12WhenH3588 you comeH935 32to appearH7200 beforeH6440 Me, WhoH4310 requiresH1245 33of you thisH2088 tramplingH7429 of My courtsH2691?13BringH935 your worthlessH7723 offeringsH4503 noH3808 longerH3254, 34IncenseH7004 is an abominationH8441 to Me. 35NewH2320 moonH2320 and sabbathH7676, the 36callingH7121 of assembliesH4744-- I cannotH3201H3808 37endureH3201 iniquityH205 and the solemnH6116 assemblyH6116.14I hateH8130 your newH2320 moonH2320 festivals and your 38appointedH4150 feastsH4150, They have becomeH1961 a burdenH2960 to Me; I am 39wearyH3811 of bearingH5375 them.15So when you 40spreadH6566 out your handsH3709 in prayer, 41I will hideH5956 My eyesH5869 from you; YesH1571, evenH1571 thoughH3588 you 42multiplyH7235 prayersH8605, I will not listenH8085. 43Your handsH3027 are 44coveredH4390 with bloodH1818.

16“45WashH7364 yourselves, 46makeH2135 yourselves cleanH2135; 47RemoveH5493 the evilH7455 of your deedsH4611 from My sightH5048H5869. 48CeaseH2308 to do evilH7489,17LearnH3925 to doH3190 goodH3190; 49SeekH1875 justiceH4941, ReproveH833 the ruthlessH2541, 5051DefendH8199 the orphanH3490, PleadH7378 for the widowH490.

“Let Us Reason”

18“ComeH1980 nowH4994, and 52let us reasonH3198 together,” SaysH559 the LordH3068, “53ThoughH518 your sinsH2399 are as scarletH8144, They will be as whiteH3835 as snowH7950; ThoughH518 they are redH119 like crimsonH8438, They will be like woolH6785.1954IfH518 you consentH14 and obeyH8085, You will 55eatH398 the bestH2898 of the landH776;20But ifH518 you refuseH3985 and rebelH4784, You will be 56devouredH398 by the swordH2719.” TrulyH3588, 57the mouthH6310 of the LordH3068 has spokenH1696.

Zion Corrupted, to Be Redeemed

21HowH351 the faithfulH539 cityH7151 has becomeH1961 a 58harlotH2181, She who was fullH4392 of justiceH4941! RighteousnessH6664 once lodgedH3885 in her, But nowH6258 murderersH7523.22Your silverH3701 has becomeH1961 drossH5509, Your drinkH5435 dilutedH4107 with waterH4325.23Your 59rulersH8269 are rebelsH5637 And companionsH2270 of thievesH1590; EveryoneH3605 60lovesH157 a bribeH7810 And chasesH7291 after rewardsH8021. They 61do not 62defendH8199 the 63orphanH3490, NorH3808 does the widow’sH490 pleaH7379 comeH935 beforeH413 them.

24ThereforeH3651 the LordH136 64GodH3068 of hostsH6635, The 65MightyH46 OneH46 of IsraelH3478, declaresH5002, “AhH1945, I will be relievedH5162 of My adversariesH6862 And 66avengeH5358 Myself on My foesH340.25I will also turnH7725 My handH3027 againstH5921 you, And will 67smeltH6884 away your drossH5509 as with lyeH1253 And will removeH5493 allH3605 your alloyH913.26Then I will restoreH7725 your 68judgesH8199 as at the firstH7223, And your counselorsH3289 as at the beginningH8462; AfterH310 that you will be calledH7121 the 69cityH5892 of righteousnessH6664, A faithfulH539 cityH7151.”

27ZionH6726 will be 70redeemedH6299 with justiceH4941 And her 71repentantH7725 ones with righteousnessH6666.28But 72transgressorsH6586 and sinnersH2400 will be 73crushedH7667 togetherH3164, And those who forsakeH5800 the LordH3068 will comeH3615 to an endH3615.29SurelyH3588 74you will be ashamedH954 of the 7576oaksH352 whichH834 you have desiredH2530, And you will be embarrassedH2659 at the 77gardensH1593 whichH834 you have chosenH977.30For you will be like an 78oakH424 whose 79leafH5929 fadesH5034 awayH5034 Or as a gardenH1593 that hasH369 noH369 waterH4325.31The strongH2634 manH2634 will becomeH1961 tinderH5296, His workH6467 also a sparkH5213. Thus they shall bothH8147 80burnH1197 togetherH3164 And thereH369 will be 81noneH369 to quenchH3518 them.
