Context of Psalms 85:10
8I will hear what God the Lord will say; For He will speak peace to His people, to His godly ones; But let them not turn back to folly. 9Surely His salvation is near to those who fear Him, That glory may dwell in our land. Lovingkindness and truth have met together; Righteousness and peace have kissed each other. 11Truth springs from the earth, And righteousness looks down from heaven. 12Indeed, the Lord will give what is good, And our land will yield its produce.

Commentaries on Psalms 85:10
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 10Mercy and truth are met together - It would be more simple to translate the original: - נפגשונ ואמת חסד נשקו ושלום צדק Chesed veemeth niphgashu ; Tsedek veshalom nashaku, - " Mercy and truth have met on the way Righteousness and peace have embraced." This is a remarkable text, and much has been said on it: but there is a beauty in it which, I think, has not been noticed. Mercy and peace are on one side; truth and righteousness on the other. Truth requires…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 10Mercy and truth are met together - That is, in the divine dealings referred to in the psalm. There has been a blending of mercy and truth in those dealings; or, both have been manifested; truth, in the divine statements, threatenings, and promises; and mercy, in forgiving sin, and in sparing the people. There is no necessary contradiction between truth and mercy; that is, the one does not necessarily conflict with the other, though the one seems to…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-13Verses 8-13 Sooner or later, God will speak peace to his people. If he do not command outward peace, yet he will suggest inward peace; speaking to their hearts by his Spirit. Peace is spoken only to those who turn from sin. All sin is folly, especially backsliding; it is the greatest folly to return to sin. Surely God's salvation is nigh, whatever our difficulties and distresses are. Also, his honour is secured, that glory may dwell in our land. And the…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 10-13In the renewed world of salvation, all the qualities of God’s care (love, truth, righteousness, and peace) come together. They transform creation and make it new (see Isaiah 32:15–20).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1010. God's promises of "mercy" will be verified by His "truth" (compare Psa 25:10; 40:10); and the "work of righteousness" in His holy government shall be "peace" (Is 32:17). There is an implied contrast with a dispensation under which God's truth sustains His threatened wrath, and His righteousness inflicts misery on the wicked.Read the comment
