Psalms 44

Former Deliverances and Present Troubles.

For the choir director. A Possibly Contemplative, or Didactic, or Skillful PsalmMaskil of the sons of Korah.

1O God, we have heard with our ears, Our 1fathers have told us The 2work that You did in their days, In the 3days of old.2You with Your own hand 4drove out the nations; Then You 5planted them; You 6afflicted the peoples, Then You 7spread them abroad.3For by their own sword they 8did not possess the land, And their own arm did not save them, But Your right hand and Your 9arm and the 10light of Your presence, For You 11favored them.

4You are 12my King, O God; 13Command 14victories for Jacob.5Through You we will 15push back our adversaries; Through Your name we will 16trample down those who rise up against us.6For I will 17not trust in my bow, Nor will my sword save me.7But You 18have saved us from our adversaries, And You have 19put to shame those who hate us.8In God we have 20boasted all day long, And we will 21give thanks to Your name forever. 22Selah.

9Yet You 23have rejected us and brought us to 24dishonor, And 25do not go out with our armies.10You cause us to 26turn back from the adversary; And those who hate us 27have taken spoil for themselves.11You give us as 28sheep 29to be eaten And have 30scattered us among the nations.12You 31sell Your people 32cheaply, And have not 33profited by their sale.13You make us a 34reproach to our neighbors, A scoffing and a 35derision to those around us.14You make us 36a byword among the nations, A 3738laughingstock among the peoples.15All day long my dishonor is before me And 39my 40humiliation has overwhelmed me,16Because of the voice of him who 41reproaches and reviles, Because of the presence of the 42enemy and the avenger.

17All this has come upon us, but we have 43not forgotten You, And we have not 44dealt falsely with Your covenant.18Our heart has not 45turned back, And our steps 46have not deviated from Your way,19Yet You have 47crushed us in a place of 48jackals And covered us with 49the shadow of death.

20If we had 50forgotten the name of our God Or extended our 51hands to 52a strange god,21Would not God 53find this out? For He knows the secrets of the heart.22But 54for Your sake we are killed all day long; We are considered as 55sheep to be slaughtered.2356Arouse Yourself, why 57do You sleep, O Lord? Awake, 58do not reject us forever.24Why do You 59hide Your face And 60forget our affliction and our oppression?25For our 61soul has sunk down into the dust; Our body cleaves to the earth.2662Rise up, be our help, And 63redeem us for the sake of Your lovingkindness.
