Psalms 55

Prayer for the Destruction of the Treacherous.

For the choir director; on stringed instruments. A Possibly Contemplative, or Didactic, or Skillful PsalmMaskil of David.

11Give ear to my prayer, O God; And 2do not hide Yourself from my supplication.2Give 3heed to me and answer me; I am restless in my 4complaint and 56am surely distracted,3Because of the voice of the enemy, Because of the 7pressure of the wicked; For they 8bring down 9trouble upon me And in anger they 10bear a grudge against me.

4My 11heart is in anguish within me, And the terrors of 12death have fallen upon me.5Fear and 13trembling come upon me, And 1415horror has overwhelmed me.6I said, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and 1617be at rest.7Behold, I would wander far away, I would 18lodge in the wilderness. 19Selah.8I would hasten to my place of refuge From the 20stormy wind and tempest.”

921Confuse, O Lord, 22divide their tongues, For I have seen 23violence and strife in the city.10Day and night they go around her upon her walls, And iniquity and mischief are in her midst.1124Destruction is in her midst; 25Oppression and deceit do not depart from her 26streets.

12For it is 27not an enemy who reproaches me, Then I could bear it; Nor is it one who hates me who 28has exalted himself against me, Then I could hide myself from him.13But it is you, a man 29my equal, My 30companion and my 3132familiar friend;14We who had sweet 33fellowship together 34Walked in the house of God in the throng.15Let 35death come 36deceitfully upon them; Let them 37go down alive to 38Sheol, For evil is in their dwelling, in their midst.

16As for me, I shall 39call upon God, And the Lord will save me.1740Evening and 41morning and at 42noon, I will complain and murmur, And He will hear my voice.18He will 43redeem my soul in peace 44from the battle which is against me, For they are 45many who strive with me.19God will 46hear and 47answer them-- Even the one 48who 49sits enthroned from of old-- Selah. With whom there 50is no change, And who 51do not fear God.20He has put forth his hands against 52those who were at peace with him; He has 5354violated his covenant.21His 55speech was 56smoother than butter, But his heart was war; His words were 57softer than oil, Yet they were drawn 58swords.

2259Cast 60your burden upon the Lord and He will sustain you; 61He will never allow the righteous to 6263be shaken.23But You, O God, will bring them down to the 6465pit of destruction; 66Men of bloodshed and deceit will 67not live out half their days. But I will 68trust in You.
