Psalms 73

The End of the Wicked Contrasted with That of the Righteous.

A Psalm of Asaph.

1Surely God is 1good to Israel, To those who are 2pure in heart!2But as for me, 3my feet came close to stumbling, My steps 4had almost slipped.3For I was 5envious of the 6arrogant As I saw the 7prosperity of the wicked.4For there are no pains in their death, And their 8body is fat.5They are 9not 10in trouble as other 11men, Nor are they 12plagued 13like mankind.6Therefore pride is 14their necklace; The 15garment of violence covers them.7Their eye 16bulges from 17fatness; The imaginations of their heart 18run riot.8They 19mock and 20wickedly speak of oppression; They 21speak from on high.9They have 22set their mouth 23against the heavens, And their tongue 24parades through the earth.

10Therefore 25his people return to this place, And waters of 26abundance are 27drunk by them.11They say, “28How does God know? And is there knowledge 29with the Most High?”12Behold, 30these are the wicked; And always 31at ease, they have increased in wealth.13Surely 32in vain I have 33kept my heart pure And 34washed my hands in innocence;14For I have been stricken 35all day long And 3637chastened every morning.

15If I had said, “I will speak thus,” Behold, I would have betrayed the 38generation of Your children.16When I 39pondered to understand this, It was 40troublesome in my sight17Until I came into the 4142sanctuary of God; Then I perceived their 43end.18Surely You set them in 44slippery places; You cast them down to 4546destruction.19How they are 4748destroyed in a moment! They are utterly swept away by 49sudden terrors!20Like a 50dream when one awakes, O Lord, when 51aroused, You will 52despise their 53form.

21When my 54heart was embittered And I was 55pierced 56within,22Then I was 57senseless and ignorant; I was like 58a 59beast 60before You.23Nevertheless 61I am continually with You; You have taken hold of my right hand.24With Your counsel You will 62guide me, And afterward 63receive me 64to glory.

2565Whom have I in heaven but You? And 66besides You, I desire nothing on earth.26My 67flesh and my heart may fail, But God is the 68strength of my heart and my 69portion forever.27For, behold, 70those who are far from You will 71perish; You have 72destroyed all those who 7374are unfaithful to You.28But as for me, 75the nearness of God is my good; I have made the Lord 76God my 77refuge, That I may 78tell of all Your works.
