Philippians 1
Thanksgiving
11Paul and 2Timothy, 3bond-servants of 4Christ Jesus,
To 5all the 67saints in Christ Jesus who are in 8Philippi, 9including the 10overseers and 11deacons: 212Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
313I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, 4always offering prayer with joy in 14my every prayer for you all, 5in view of your 1516participation in the 17gospel 18from the first day until now. 6For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until 19the day of Christ Jesus. 720For 21it is only right for me to feel this way about you all, because I 22have you in my heart, since both in my 2324imprisonment and in the 25defense and confirmation of the 26gospel, you all are partakers of grace with me. 8For 27God is my witness, how I long for you all with the 28affection of 29Christ Jesus. 9And this I pray, that 30your love may abound still more and more in 31real knowledge and all discernment, 10so that you may 3233approve the things that are excellent, in order to be sincere and blameless 34until 35the day of Christ; 11having been filled with the 36fruit of righteousness which comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.
The Gospel Is Preached
12Now I want you to know, brethren, that my circumstances 37have turned out for the greater progress of the 38gospel, 13so that my 3940imprisonment in the cause of Christ has become well known throughout the whole 41praetorian guard and to 42everyone else, 14and that most of the 43brethren, trusting in the Lord because of my 4445imprisonment, have 46far more courage to speak the word of God without fear. 1547Some, to be sure, are preaching Christ even 48from envy and strife, but some also 49from good will; 16the latter do it out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the 50gospel; 17the former proclaim Christ 51out of selfish ambition 52rather than from pure motives, thinking to cause me distress in my 5354imprisonment. 18What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed; and in this I rejoice.
Yes, and I will rejoice, 19for I know that this will turn out for my 55deliverance 56through your 57prayers and the provision of 58the Spirit of Jesus Christ, 20according to my 59earnest expectation and 60hope, that I will not be put to shame in anything, but that with 61all boldness, Christ will even now, as always, be 62exalted in my body, 63whether by life or by death.
To Live Is Christ
21For to me, 64to live is Christ and to die is gain. 2265But if I am to live on in the flesh, this will mean 66fruitful labor for me; and I do not know 67which to choose. 23But I am hard-pressed from both directions, having the 68desire to depart and 69be with Christ, for that is very much better; 24yet to remain on in the flesh is more necessary for your sake. 2570Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all for your progress and joy 71in the faith, 26so that your 72proud confidence in me may abound in Christ Jesus through my coming to you again.
27Only conduct yourselves in a manner 73worthy of the 74gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or remain absent, I will hear of you that you are 75standing firm in 76one spirit, with one 77mind 78striving together for the faith of the gospel; 28in no way alarmed by your opponents--which is a 79sign of destruction for them, but of salvation for you, and that too, from God. 29For to you 80it has been granted for Christ’s sake, not only to believe in Him, but also to 81suffer for His sake, 30experiencing the same 82conflict which 83you saw in me, and now hear to be in me.
