Psalms 88

A Petition to Be Saved from Death.

A Song. A Psalm of the sons of Korah. For the choir director; according to Mahalath Leannoth. A Possibly, Contemplative, or Didactic, or Skillful PsalmMaskil of Heman 1 Kin 4:31; 1 Chr 2:6; Ps 89: titlethe Ezrahite.

1O Lord, the 1God of my salvation, I have 2cried out by day and in the night before You.2Let my prayer 3come before You; 4Incline Your ear to my cry!3For my 5soul has 6had enough troubles, And 7my life has drawn near to 8Sheol.4I am reckoned among those who 9go down to the pit; I have become like a man 10without strength,511Forsaken 12among the dead, Like the slain who lie in the grave, Whom You remember no more, And they are 13cut off from Your hand.6You have put me in 14the lowest pit, In 15dark places, in the 16depths.7Your wrath 17has rested upon me, And You have afflicted me with 18all Your waves. 19Selah.8You have removed 20my acquaintances far from me; You have made me an 2122object of loathing to them; I am 23shut up and cannot go out.9My 24eye has wasted away because of affliction; I have 25called upon You every day, O Lord; I have 26spread out my 27hands to You.

10Will You perform wonders for the dead? Will 28the 29departed spirits rise and praise You? Selah.11Will Your lovingkindness be declared in the grave, Your faithfulness in 30Abaddon?12Will Your wonders be made known in the 31darkness? And Your 32righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?

13But I, O Lord, have cried out 33to You for help, And 34in the morning my prayer comes before You.14O Lord, why 35do You reject my soul? Why do You 36hide Your face from me?15I was afflicted and 37about to die from my youth on; I suffer 38Your terrors; I am 39overcome.16Your 40burning anger has passed over me; Your terrors have 4142destroyed me.17They have 43surrounded me 44like water all day long; They have 45encompassed me altogether.18You have removed 46lover and friend far from me; My acquaintances are in darkness.
