Psalms 42

Thirsting for God in Trouble and Exile.

For the choir director. A Possibly Contemplative, or Didactic, or Skillful PsalmMaskil of the sons of Korah.

1As the deer 1pants for the water brooks, So my soul 23pants for You, O God.2My soul 4thirsts for God, for the 5living God; When shall I come and 67appear before God?3My 8tears have been my food day and night, While they 9say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”4These things I remember and I 10pour out my soul within me. For I 11used to go along with the throng and 12lead them in procession to the house of God, With the voice of 13joy and thanksgiving, a multitude keeping festival.

514Why are you 1516in despair, O my soul? And why have you become 17disturbed within me? 1819Hope in God, for I shall 20again praise 21Him For the 2223help of His presence.6O my God, my soul is 24in despair within me; Therefore I 25remember You from 26the land of the Jordan And the 27peaks of 28Hermon, from Mount Mizar.7Deep calls to deep at the sound of Your waterfalls; All Your 29breakers and Your waves have rolled over me.8The Lord will 30command His lovingkindness in the daytime; And His song will be with me 31in the night, A prayer to 32the God of my life.

9I will say to God 33my rock, “Why have You forgotten me? Why do I go 34mourning 35because of the 36oppression of the enemy?”10As a shattering of my bones, my adversaries revile me, While they 37say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”1138Why are you 39in despair, O my soul? And why have you become disturbed within me? 40Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him, The 41help of my countenance and my God.
