Psalms 109

Vengeance Invoked upon Adversaries.

For the choir director. A Psalm of David.

1O 1God of my praise, 2Do not be silent!2For they have opened the 3wicked and 4deceitful mouth against me; They have spoken 5against me with a 6lying tongue.3They have also surrounded me with words of hatred, And fought against me 7without cause.4In return 8for my love they act as my accusers; But 9I am in prayer.5Thus they have 1011repaid me evil for good And 12hatred for my love.

6Appoint a wicked man over him, And let an 1314accuser stand at his right hand.7When he is judged, let him 15come forth guilty, And let his 16prayer become sin.8Let 17his days be few; Let 18another take his office.9Let his 19children be fatherless And his 20wife a widow.10Let his 21children wander about and beg; And let them 22seek sustenance 23far from their ruined homes.11Let 24the creditor 25seize all that he has, And let 26strangers plunder the product of his labor.12Let there be none to 2728extend lovingkindness to him, Nor 29any to be gracious to his fatherless children.13Let his 30posterity be 31cut off; In a following generation let their 32name be blotted out.

14Let 33the iniquity of his fathers be remembered 34before the Lord, And do not let the sin of his mother be 35blotted out.15Let 36them be before the Lord continually, That He may 37cut off their memory from the earth;16Because he did not remember to show lovingkindness, But persecuted the 38afflicted and needy man, And the 39despondent in heart, to 40put them to death.17He also loved cursing, so 41it came to him; And he did not delight in blessing, so it was far from him.18But he 42clothed himself with cursing as with his garment, And it 43entered into 44his body like water And like oil into his bones.19Let it be to him as 45a garment with which he covers himself, And for a belt with which he constantly 46girds himself.2047Let this be the 48reward of my accusers from the Lord, And of those who 49speak evil against my soul.

21But You, O 50God, the Lord, deal kindly with me 51for Your name’s sake; Because 52Your lovingkindness is good, deliver me;22For 53I am afflicted and needy, And 54my heart is 55wounded within me.23I am passing 56like a shadow when it lengthens; I am shaken off 57like the locust.24My 58knees 59are weak from 60fasting, And my flesh has grown lean, without fatness.25I also have become a 61reproach to them; When they see me, they 62wag their head.

2663Help me, O Lord my God; Save me according to Your lovingkindness.2764And let them 65know that this is Your hand; You, Lord, have done it.2866Let them curse, but You bless; When they arise, they shall be ashamed, But Your 67servant shall be glad.2968Let 69my accusers be clothed with dishonor, And 70let them 71cover themselves with their own shame as with a robe.

30With my mouth I will give thanks abundantly to the Lord; And in the midst of many 72I will praise Him.31For He stands 73at the right hand of the needy, To save him from those who 74judge his soul.
