Psalms 39
The Vanity of Life.
For the choir director, for 1 Chr 16:41Jeduthun. A Psalm of David.
1I said, “I will 1guard my ways That I 2may not sin with my tongue; I will guard 3my mouth as with a muzzle While the wicked are in my presence.”2I was 4mute 5and silent, I 6refrained even from good, And my 7sorrow grew worse.3My 8heart was hot within me, While I was musing the fire burned; Then I spoke with my tongue:4“Lord, make me to know 9my end And what is the extent of my days; Let me know how 10transient I am.5Behold, You have made 11my days as handbreadths, And my 12lifetime as nothing in Your sight; Surely every man 13at his best is 14a mere 15breath. 16Selah.6Surely every man 17walks about as 18a phantom; Surely they make an 19uproar for nothing; He 20amasses riches and does not know who will gather them.
7“And now, Lord, for what do I wait? My 21hope is in You.822Deliver me from all my transgressions; Make me not the 23reproach of the foolish.9I have become 24mute, I do not open my mouth, Because it is 25You who have done it.1026Remove Your plague from me; Because of 27the opposition of Your hand I am 28perishing.11With 29reproofs You chasten a man for iniquity; You 30consume as a moth what is precious to him; Surely 31every man is a mere breath. Selah.
12“32Hear my prayer, O Lord, and give ear to my cry; Do not be silent 33at my tears; For I am 34a stranger with You, A 35sojourner like all my fathers.1336Turn Your gaze away from me, that I may 37smile again Before I depart and am no more.”
