Psalms 89
The Lord’s Covenant with David, and Israel’s Afflictions.
A Possibly, Contemplative, or Didactic, or Skillful PsalmMaskil of 1 Kin 4:31Ethan Ps 88: titlethe Ezrahite.
1I will 1sing of the lovingkindness of the Lord forever; To all generations I will 2make known Your 3faithfulness with my mouth.2For I have said, “4Lovingkindness will be built up forever; In the heavens You will establish Your 5faithfulness.”3“I have made a covenant with 6My chosen; I have 7sworn to David My servant,4I will establish your 8seed forever And build up your 9throne to all generations.” 10Selah.
5The 11heavens will praise Your wonders, O Lord; Your faithfulness also 12in the assembly of the 13holy ones.6For 14who in the skies is comparable to the Lord? Who among the 1516sons of the mighty is like the Lord,7A God 17greatly feared in the council of the 18holy ones, And 19awesome above all those who are around Him?8O Lord God of hosts, 20who is like You, O mighty 21Lord? Your faithfulness also surrounds You.9You rule the swelling of the sea; When its waves rise, You 22still them.10You Yourself crushed 2324Rahab like one who is slain; You 25scattered Your enemies with 26Your mighty arm.
11The 27heavens are Yours, the earth also is Yours; The 28world and 29all it contains, You have founded them.12The 30north and the south, You have created them; 31Tabor and 32Hermon 33shout for joy at Your name.13You have 34a strong arm; Your hand is mighty, Your 35right hand is exalted.1436Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; 37Lovingkindness and 38truth go before You.15How blessed are the people who know the 3940joyful sound! O Lord, they walk in the 41light of Your countenance.16In 42Your name they rejoice all the day, And by Your righteousness they are exalted.17For You are the glory of 43their strength, And by Your favor 44our 45horn is exalted.18For our 46shield belongs to the Lord, 47And our king to the 48Holy One of Israel.
1949Once You spoke in vision to Your godly 50ones, And said, “I have 51given help to one who is 52mighty; I have exalted one 53chosen from the people.20I have 54found David My servant; With My holy 55oil I have anointed him,21With whom 56My hand will be established; My arm also will 57strengthen him.22The enemy will not 58deceive him, Nor the 5960son of wickedness afflict him.23But I shall 61crush his adversaries before him, And strike those who hate him.24My 62faithfulness and My lovingkindness will be with him, And in My name his 63horn will be exalted.25I shall also set his hand 64on the sea And his right hand on the rivers.26He will cry to Me, ‘You are 65my Father, My God, and the 66rock of my salvation.’27I also shall make him My 67firstborn, The 68highest of the kings of the earth.28My 69lovingkindness I will keep for him forever, And My 70covenant shall be confirmed to him.29So I will establish his 7172descendants forever And his 73throne 74as the days of heaven.
30“If his sons 75forsake My law And do not walk in My judgments,31If they 76violate My statutes And do not keep My commandments,32Then I will punish their transgression with the 77rod And their iniquity with stripes.33But I will not break off 78My lovingkindness from him, Nor deal falsely in My faithfulness.34My 79covenant I will not 80violate, Nor will I 81alter 82the utterance of My lips.3583Once I have 84sworn by My holiness; I will not lie to David.36His 8586descendants shall endure forever And his 87throne 88as the sun before Me.37It shall be established forever 89like the moon, And the 90witness in the sky is faithful.” 91Selah.
38But You have 92cast off and 93rejected, You have been full of wrath 94against Your 95anointed.39You have 96spurned the covenant of Your servant; You have 97profaned 98his crown 99in the dust.40You have 100broken down all his walls; You have 101brought his strongholds to ruin.41102All who pass along the way plunder him; He has become a 103reproach to his neighbors.42You have 104exalted the right hand of his adversaries; You have 105made all his enemies rejoice.43You also turn back the edge of his sword And have 106not made him stand in battle.44You have made his 107108splendor to cease And cast his throne to the ground.45You have 109shortened the days of his youth; You have 110covered him with shame. Selah.
46111How long, O Lord? Will You hide Yourself forever? Will Your 112wrath burn like fire?47113Remember 114what my span of life is; For what 115vanity 116You have created all the sons of men!48What man can live and not 117see death? Can he 118deliver his soul from the 119power of 120Sheol? Selah.
49Where are Your former lovingkindnesses, O Lord, Which You 121swore to David in Your faithfulness?50Remember, O Lord, the 122reproach of Your servants; 123How I bear in my bosom the reproach of all the many peoples,51With which 124Your enemies have reproached, O Lord, With which they have reproached the footsteps of 125Your anointed.
