• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5I will raise unto David a righteous Branch - As there has been no age, from the Babylonish captivity to the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans, in which such a state of prosperity existed, and no king or governor who could answer at all to the character here given, the passage has been understood to refer to our blessed Lord, Jesus Christ, who was a branch out of the stem of Jesse; a righteous king; by the power of his Spirit and influence of his…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5Even with the temporal kingship abolished, David‘s mercies are still sure. A righteous Branch - Or, sprout, germ (see Isaiah 4:2 note). David‘s family is to be dethroned (temporally), that it may reign gloriously (spiritually). But compare Jeremiah 33:17, note; Jeremiah 33:25…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5A righteous descendant from King David's line, whose rule had paused, would become a King. As the moral condition of the Jews required in each instance, so Messiah was exhibited in a corresponding phase, thus becoming more and more the soul of the nation's life: so that He is represented as the antitypical Israel (Is 49:3). unto…Read the comment
