Psalms 49

The Folly of Trusting in Riches.

For the choir director. A Psalm of the sons of Korah.

11Hear this, all peoples; Give ear, all 2inhabitants of the world,2Both 3low and high, Rich and poor together.3My mouth will 4speak wisdom, And the meditation of my heart will be 5understanding.4I will incline my ear to 6a proverb; 7I will 8express my 9riddle on the harp.

5Why should I 10fear in days of adversity, When the iniquity of my 11foes surrounds me,6Even those who 12trust in their wealth And boast in the abundance of their riches?7No man can by any means 13redeem his brother Or give to God a 14ransom for him--8For 15the redemption of 16his soul is costly, And he should cease trying forever--9That he should 17live on eternally, That he should not 1819undergo decay.

10For he sees that even 20wise men die; The 21stupid and the senseless alike perish And 22leave their wealth to others.11Their 2324inner thought is that their houses 25are forever And their dwelling places to all generations; They have 26called their lands after their own names.12But 27man in his 28pomp will not endure; He is like the 29beasts that 30perish.

13This is the 31way of those who are foolish, And of those after them who 32approve their words. 33Selah.14As sheep they are appointed 34for 35Sheol; Death shall be their shepherd; And the 36upright shall rule over them in the morning, And their form shall be for 37Sheol 38to consume 39So that they have no habitation.15But God will 40redeem my soul from the 41power of 42Sheol, For 43He will receive me. Selah.

16Do not be afraid 44when a man becomes rich, When the 45glory of his house is increased;17For when he dies he will 46carry nothing away; His 47glory will not descend after him.18Though while he lives he 48congratulates 49himself-- And though men praise you when you do well for yourself--1950He shall 51go to the generation of his fathers; They will never see 52the light.2053Man in his 54pomp, yet without understanding, Is 55like the 56beasts that 57perish.
