The Genealogy of Jesus the Messiah

1The 1record of the genealogy of 2Jesus 3the Messiah, 4the son of David, 5the son of Abraham:

2Abraham 6was the father of Isaac, 7Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of 8Judah and his brothers. 3Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, 9Perez was the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of 10Ram. 4Ram was the father of Amminadab, Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon. 5Salmon was the father of Boaz by Rahab, Boaz was the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse. 6Jesse was the father of David the king.

David 11was the father of Solomon by 12Bathsheba who had been the wife of Uriah. 7Solomon 13was the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of 14Asa. 8Asa was the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of 15Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah. 9Uzziah was the father of 16Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah. 10Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of 17Amon, and Amon the 18father of Josiah. 11Josiah became the father of 19Jeconiah and his brothers, at the time of the 20deportation to Babylon.

12After the 21deportation to Babylon: Jeconiah became the father of 22Shealtiel, and Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel. 13Zerubbabel was the father of 23Abihud, Abihud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor. 14Azor was the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud. 15Eliud was the father of Eleazar, Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob. 16Jacob was the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, by whom Jesus was born, 24who is called 25the Messiah.

17So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; from David to the 26deportation to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the 27deportation to Babylon to 28the Messiah, fourteen generations.

Conception and Birth of Jesus

18Now the birth of Jesus 29Christ was as follows: when His 30mother Mary had been 31betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was 32found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. 19And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned 3334to send her away secretly. 20But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “35Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for 36the Child who has been 37conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21She will bear a Son; and 38you shall call His name Jesus, for 39He 40will save His people from their sins.” 22Now all this 41took place to fulfill what was 42spoken by the Lord through the prophet: 23“43Behold, the virgin shall be with 44child and shall bear a Son, and they shall call His name 45Immanuel,” which translated means, “46God with us.” 24And Joseph 47awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife, 2548but kept her a virgin until she 49gave birth to a Son; and 50he called His name Jesus.
