Psalms 38
Prayer of a Suffering Penitent.
A Psalm of David, for a memorial.
1O Lord, 1rebuke me not in Your wrath, And chasten me not in Your burning anger.2For Your 2arrows have sunk deep into me, And 3Your hand has pressed down on me.3There is 4no soundness in my flesh 5because of Your indignation; There is no health 6in my bones because of my sin.4For my 7iniquities are gone over my head; As a heavy burden they weigh too much for me.5My 8wounds grow foul and fester Because of 9my folly.6I am bent over and 10greatly bowed down; I 11go mourning all day long.7For my loins are filled with 12burning, And there is 13no soundness in my flesh.8I am 14benumbed and 15badly crushed; I 1617groan because of the 18agitation of my heart.
9Lord, all 19my desire is 20before You; And my 21sighing is not hidden from You.10My heart throbs, 22my strength fails me; And the 23light of my eyes, even 24that 25has gone from me.11My 2627loved ones and my friends stand aloof from my plague; And my kinsmen 28stand afar off.12Those who 29seek my life 30lay snares for me; And those who 31seek to injure me have 32threatened destruction, And they 33devise treachery all day long.
13But I, like a deaf man, do not hear; And I am like a 34mute man who does not open his mouth.14Yes, I am like a man who does not hear, And in whose mouth are no arguments.15For 35I 36hope in You, O Lord; You 37will answer, O Lord my God.16For I said, “May they not rejoice over me, Who, when my foot slips, 38would magnify themselves against me.”17For I am 39ready to fall, And 40my 41sorrow is continually before me.18For I 4243confess my iniquity; I am full of 44anxiety because of my sin.19But my 45enemies are vigorous and 46strong, And many are those who 47hate me wrongfully.20And those who 48repay evil for good, They 49oppose me, because I follow what is good.21Do not forsake me, O Lord; O my God, 50do not be far from me!22Make 51haste to help me, O Lord, 52my salvation!
