1 Corinthians 1
Appeal to Unity
1Paul, 1called as an apostle of Jesus Christ 2by 3the will of God, and 4Sosthenes our 5brother,
2To 6the church of God which is at 7Corinth, to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, 8saints 9by calling, with all who in every place 10call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours:
311Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
412I thank 13my God always concerning you for the grace of God which was given you in Christ Jesus, 5that in everything you were 14enriched in Him, in all 15speech and 16all knowledge, 6even as 17the testimony concerning Christ was confirmed 18in you, 7so that you are not lacking in any gift, 19awaiting eagerly the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ, 820who will also confirm you to the end, blameless in 21the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 922God is faithful, through whom you were 23called into 24fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
10Now 25I exhort you, 26brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all 27agree and that there be no 2829divisions among you, but that you be 30made complete in 31the same mind and in the same judgment. 11For I have been informed concerning you, my brethren, by Chloe’s people, that there are quarrels among you. 12Now I mean this, that 32each one of you is saying, “I am of Paul,” and “I of 33Apollos,” and “I of 34Cephas,” and “I of Christ.” 1335Has Christ been divided? Paul was not crucified for you, was he? Or were you 36baptized 37in the name of Paul? 1438I thank God that I 39baptized none of you except 40Crispus and 41Gaius, 15so that no one would say you were baptized 42in my name. 16Now I did baptize also the 43household of Stephanas; beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized any other. 1744For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, 45not in 46cleverness of speech, so that the cross of Christ would not be made void.
The Wisdom of God
18For the word of the cross is 47foolishness to 48those who 49are perishing, but to us who 50are being saved it is 51the power of God. 19For it is written, “52I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, And the cleverness of the clever I will set aside.” 2053Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of 54this age? Has not God 55made foolish the wisdom of 56the world? 21For since in the wisdom of God 57the world through its wisdom did not come to know God, 58God was well-pleased through the 59foolishness of the 60message preached to 61save those who believe. 22For indeed 62Jews ask for 63signs and Greeks search for wisdom; 23but we preach 6465Christ crucified, 66to Jews a stumbling block and to Gentiles 67foolishness, 24but to those who are 68the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ 69the power of God and 70the wisdom of God. 25Because the 71foolishness of God is wiser than men, and 72the weakness of God is stronger than men.
26For 73consider your 74calling, brethren, that there were 75not many wise according to 76the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble; 27but 77God has chosen the foolish things of 78the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of 79the world to shame the things which are strong, 28and the base things of 80the world and the despised God has chosen, 81the things that are not, so that He may 82nullify the things that are, 29so that 83no 84man may boast before God. 30But 85by His doing you are in 86Christ Jesus, who became to us 87wisdom from God, 88and 89righteousness and 90sanctification, and 91redemption, 31so that, just as it is written, “92Let him who boasts, boast in the Lord.”
