Psalms 41

The Psalmist in Sickness Complains of Enemies and False Friends.

For the choir director. A Psalm of David.

1How blessed is he who 1considers the 2helpless; The Lord will deliver him 3in a day of 4trouble.2The Lord will 5protect him and keep him alive, And he shall 6be called 7blessed upon the earth; And 8do not give him over to the desire of his enemies.3The Lord will sustain him upon his sickbed; In his illness, You 9restore him to health.

4As for me, I said, “O Lord, be gracious to me; 10Heal my soul, for 11I have sinned against You.”5My enemies 12speak evil against me, “When will he die, and his name perish?”6And 13when he comes to see me, he 14speaks 15falsehood; His heart gathers wickedness to itself; When he goes outside, he tells it.7All who hate me whisper together against me; Against me they 16devise my hurt, saying,8“A wicked thing is poured out 17upon him, That when he lies down, he will 18not rise up again.”9Even my 19close friend in whom I trusted, Who ate my bread, Has lifted up his heel against me.

10But You, O Lord, be gracious to me and 20raise me up, That I may repay them.11By this I know that 21You are pleased with me, Because 22my enemy does not shout in triumph over me.12As for me, 23You uphold me in my integrity, And You set me 24in Your presence forever.
