Psalms 51
A Contrite Sinner’s Prayer for Pardon.
For the choir director. A Psalm of David, when 2 Sam 12:1Nathan the prophet came to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba.
11Be gracious to me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; According to the greatness of 2Your compassion 3blot out my transgressions.24Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity And 5cleanse me from my sin.3For 6I 7know my transgressions, And my sin is ever before me.48Against You, You only, I have sinned And done what is 9evil in Your sight, So that 10You 11are justified 12when You speak And 13blameless when You judge.
5Behold, I was 14brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me.6Behold, You desire 15truth in the 16innermost being, And in the hidden part You will 17make me know wisdom.718Purify me 19with hyssop, and I shall be clean; 20Wash me, and I shall be 21whiter than snow.822Make me to hear 23joy and gladness, Let the 24bones which You have broken rejoice.925Hide Your face from my sins And blot out all my iniquities.
1026Create 27in me a 28clean heart, O God, And renew 29a 30steadfast spirit within me.1131Do not cast me away from Your presence And do not take Your 32Holy Spirit from me.12Restore to me the 33joy of Your salvation And sustain me with a 34willing spirit.13Then I will 35teach transgressors Your ways, And sinners will 36be 37converted to You.
14Deliver me from 38bloodguiltiness, O God, 39the God of my salvation; Then my 40tongue will joyfully sing of Your righteousness.15O Lord, 4142open my lips, That my mouth may 43declare Your praise.16For You 44do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it; You are not pleased with burnt offering.17The sacrifices of God are a 45broken spirit; A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.
1846By Your favor do good to Zion; 4748Build the walls of Jerusalem.19Then You will delight in 4950righteous sacrifices, In 51burnt offering and whole burnt offering; Then 52young bulls will be offered on Your altar.
