Psalms 69

A Cry of Distress and Imprecation on Adversaries.

For the choir director; according to Or possibly LiliesShoshannim. A Psalm of David.

1Save me, O God, For the 1waters have 2threatened my life.2I have sunk in deep 3mire, and there is no foothold; I have come into deep waters, and a 45flood overflows me.3I am 6weary with my crying; my throat is parched; My 7eyes fail while I wait for my God.4Those 8who hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head; Those who would 9destroy me 10are powerful, being wrongfully my enemies; 11What I did not steal, I then have to restore.

5O God, it is You who knows 12my folly, And 13my wrongs are not hidden from You.6May those who wait for You not 14be ashamed through me, O Lord 15God of hosts; May those who seek You not be dishonored through me, O God of Israel,7Because 16for Your sake I have borne reproach; 17Dishonor has covered my face.8I have become 18estranged 19from my brothers And an alien to my mother’s sons.9For 20zeal for Your house has consumed me, And 21the reproaches of those who reproach You have fallen on me.10When I wept 22in my soul with fasting, It became my reproach.11When I made 23sackcloth my clothing, I became 24a byword to them.12Those who 25sit in the gate talk about me, And I am the 2627song of the drunkards.

13But as for me, my prayer is to You, O Lord, 28at an acceptable time; O God, in the 29greatness of Your lovingkindness, Answer me with 30Your saving truth.14Deliver me from the 31mire and do not let me sink; May I be 32delivered from 33my foes and from the 3435deep waters.15May the 3637flood of water not overflow me Nor the deep swallow me up, Nor the 38pit shut its mouth on me.

16Answer me, O Lord, for 39Your lovingkindness is good; 40According to the greatness of Your compassion, 41turn to me,17And 42do not hide Your face from Your servant, For I am 43in distress; answer me quickly.18Oh draw near to my soul and 44redeem it; 45Ransom me because of my enemies!19You know my 46reproach and my shame and my dishonor; All my adversaries are 47before You.

20Reproach has 48broken my heart and I am so sick. And 49I looked for sympathy, but there was none, And for 50comforters, but I found none.21They also gave me 5152gall 53for my food And for my thirst they 54gave me vinegar to drink.

22May 55their table before them become a snare; And 5657when they are in peace, may it become a trap.23May their 58eyes grow dim so that they cannot see, And make their 59loins shake continually.2460Pour out Your indignation on them, And may Your burning anger overtake them.25May their 6162camp be desolate; May none dwell in their tents.26For they have 63persecuted him whom 64You Yourself have smitten, And they tell of the pain of those whom 65You have 66wounded.27Add 67iniquity to their iniquity, And 68may they not come into 69Your righteousness.28May they be 70blotted out of the 71book of life And may they not be 7273recorded with the righteous.

29But I am 74afflicted and in pain; 75May Your salvation, O God, 76set me securely on high.30I will 77praise the name of God with song And 78magnify Him with 79thanksgiving.31And it will 80please the Lord better than an ox Or a young bull with horns and hoofs.32The 81humble 82have seen it and are glad; You who seek God, 83let your heart 84revive.33For 85the Lord hears the needy And 86does not despise His who are prisoners.

34Let 87heaven and earth praise Him, The seas and 88everything that moves in them.35For God will 89save Zion and 90build the cities of Judah, That they may dwell there and 91possess it.36The 9293descendants of His servants will inherit it, And those who love His name 94will dwell in it.
