Song of Songs 1

The Young Shulammite Bride and Jerusalem’s Daughters

1The 1Song of 2Songs, which is Solomon’s.

2“3May he kiss me with the kisses of his mouth! For your 4love is better than wine.3Your 5oils have a pleasing fragrance, Your 6name is like 7purified oil; Therefore the 89maidens love you.4Draw me after you and let us run together! The 10king has brought me into his chambers.” “11We will rejoice in you and be glad; We will 12extol your 13love more than wine. Rightly do they love you.”

5“14I am black but 15lovely, O 16daughters of Jerusalem, Like the 17tents of 18Kedar, Like the curtains of Solomon.6Do not stare at me because I am 19swarthy, For the sun has burned me. My 20mother’s sons were angry with me; They made me 21caretaker of the vineyards, But I have not taken care of my own vineyard.7Tell me, O you 22whom my soul loves, Where do you 23pasture your flock, Where do you make it 24lie down at noon? For why should I be like one who 25veils herself Beside the flocks of your 26companions?”

Solomon, the Lover, Speaks

8“27If you yourself do not know, 28Most beautiful among women, Go forth on the trail of the flock And pasture your young goats By the tents of the shepherds.

9“29To me, 30my darling, you are like My 31mare among the chariots of Pharaoh.10Your 32cheeks are lovely with ornaments, Your neck with strings of 33beads.”

11“34We will make for you ornaments of gold With beads of silver.”

12“35While the king was at his 36table, My 3738perfume gave forth its fragrance.13My beloved is to me a pouch of 39myrrh Which lies all night between my breasts.14My beloved is to me a cluster of 40henna blossoms In the vineyards of 41Engedi.”

15“424344How beautiful you are, my darling, 45How beautiful you are! Your 46eyes are like doves.”

16“4748How handsome you are, 49my beloved, And so pleasant! Indeed, our couch is luxuriant!17The beams of our houses are 50cedars, Our rafters, 5152cypresses.
