Psalms 78:5-72
5For He established a 1testimony in Jacob And appointed a 2law in Israel, Which He 3commanded our fathers That they should 45teach them to their children,66That the generation to come might know, even 7the children yet to be born, That they may arise and 8tell them to their children,7That they should put their confidence in God And 9not forget the works of God, But 10keep His commandments,8And 11not be like their fathers, A 12stubborn and rebellious generation, A generation that 13did not 14prepare its heart And whose spirit was not 15faithful to God.
9The sons of Ephraim 16were 17archers equipped with bows, Yet 18they turned back in the day of battle.10They 19did not keep the covenant of God And refused to 20walk in His law;11They 21forgot His deeds And His 22miracles that He had shown them.1223He wrought wonders before their fathers In the land of Egypt, in the 24field of Zoan.13He 25divided the sea and caused them to pass through, And He made the waters stand 26up like a heap.14Then He led them with the cloud by 27day And all the night with a 28light of fire.15He 29split the rocks in the wilderness And gave them abundant drink like the ocean depths.16He 30brought forth streams also from the rock And caused waters to run down like rivers.
17Yet they still continued to sin against Him, To 31rebel against the Most High in the desert.18And in their heart they 32put God to the test By asking 33food according to their desire.19Then they spoke against God; They said, “34Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?20Behold, He 35struck the rock so that waters gushed out, And streams were overflowing; Can He give bread also? Will He provide 3637meat for His people?”
21Therefore the Lord heard and 38was 39full of wrath; And a fire was kindled against Jacob And anger also mounted against Israel,22Because they 40did not believe in God And did not trust in His salvation.23Yet He commanded the clouds above And 41opened the doors of heaven;24He 42rained down manna upon them to eat And gave them 4344food from heaven.25Man did eat the bread of 45angels; He sent them 46food 4748in abundance.26He 49caused the east wind to blow in the heavens And by His 50power He directed the south wind.27When He rained 51meat upon them like the dust, Even 52winged fowl like the sand of the seas,28Then He let them fall in the midst of 53their camp, Round about their dwellings.29So they 54ate and were well filled, And their desire He gave to them.3055Before they had satisfied their desire, 56While their food was in their mouths,31The 57anger of God rose against them And killed 58some of their 59stoutest ones, And 60subdued the choice men of Israel.32In spite of all this they 61still sinned And 62did not believe in His wonderful works.33So He brought 63their days to an end in 64futility And their years in sudden terror.
34When He killed them, then they 65sought Him, And returned and searched 66diligently for God;35And they remembered that God was their 67rock, And the Most High God their 68Redeemer.36But they 69deceived Him with their mouth And 70lied to Him with their tongue.37For their heart was not 71steadfast toward Him, Nor were they faithful in His covenant.38But He, being 72compassionate, 7374forgave their iniquity and did not destroy them; And often He 7576restrained His anger And did not arouse all His wrath.39Thus 77He remembered that they were but 78flesh, A 7980wind that passes and does not return.
40How often they 81rebelled against Him in the wilderness And 82grieved Him in the 83desert!41Again and again they 8485tempted God, And pained the 86Holy One of Israel.42They 87did not remember 88His 89power, The day when He 90redeemed them from the adversary,43When He performed His 91signs in Egypt And His 92marvels in the field of Zoan,44And 93turned their rivers to blood, And their streams, they could not drink.45He sent among them swarms of 94flies which devoured them, And 95frogs which destroyed them.46He gave also their crops to the 96grasshopper And the product of their labor to the 97locust.47He 98destroyed their vines with 99hailstones And their sycamore trees with frost.48He gave over their 100cattle also to the hailstones And their herds to bolts of lightning.49He 101sent upon them His burning anger, Fury and indignation and trouble, 102A band of destroying angels.50He leveled a path for His anger; He did not spare their soul from death, But 103gave over their life to the plague,51And 104smote all the firstborn in Egypt, The 105first issue of their virility in the tents of 106Ham.52But He 107led forth His own people like sheep And guided them in the wilderness 108like a flock;53He led them 109safely, so that they did not fear; But 110the sea engulfed their enemies.
54So 111He brought them to His holy 112land, To this 113114hill country 115which His right hand had gained.55He also 116drove out the nations before them And 117apportioned them for an inheritance by measurement, And made the tribes of Israel dwell in their tents.56Yet they 118119tempted and 120rebelled against the Most High God And did not keep His testimonies,57But turned back and 121acted treacherously like their fathers; They 122turned aside like a treacherous bow.58For they 123provoked Him with their 124high places And 125aroused His jealousy with their 126graven images.59When God heard, He 127was filled with 128wrath And greatly 129abhorred Israel;60So that He 130abandoned the 131dwelling place at Shiloh, The tent 132which He had pitched among men,61And gave up His 133strength to captivity And His glory 134into the hand of the adversary.62He also 135delivered His people to the sword, And 136was filled with wrath at His inheritance.63137Fire devoured 138His young men, And 139His 140virgins had no wedding songs.64141His 142priests fell by the sword, And 143His 144widows could not weep.
65Then the Lord 145awoke as if from sleep, Like a 146warrior 147overcome by wine.66He 148149drove His adversaries backward; He put on them an everlasting reproach.67He also 150rejected the tent of Joseph, And did not choose the tribe of Ephraim,68But chose the tribe of Judah, Mount 151Zion which He loved.69And He 152built His sanctuary like the heights, Like the earth which He has founded forever.70He also 153chose David His servant And took him from the sheepfolds;71From 154155the care of the 156ewes 157with suckling lambs He brought him To 158shepherd Jacob His people, And Israel 159His inheritance.72So he shepherded them according to the 160integrity of his heart, And guided them with his skillful hands.
