Context of Psalms 44:23
21Would not God find this out? For He knows the secrets of the heart. 22But for Your sake we are killed all day long; We are considered as sheep to be slaughtered. Arouse Yourself, why do You sleep, O Lord? Awake, do not reject us forever. 24Why do You hide Your face And forget our affliction and our oppression? 25For our soul has sunk down into the dust; Our body cleaves to the earth.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 23A wake, why steepest thou, O Lord? - That is, Why dost thou appear as one asleep, who is regardless of the safety of his friends. This is a freedom of speech which can only be allowed to inspired men; and in their mouths it is always to be figuratively understood.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 23Awake, why sleepest thou? - This is a solemn and earnest appeal to God to interpose in their behalf, as if he were “asleep,” or were regardless of their sufferings. Compare Psalm 3:7, note; Psalm 7:6, note; Psalm 35:23, note. Arise, cast us not off for ever - Do not forsake us always. Compare Psalm 44:9. He had seemed to have cast them off; to have forgotten them; to have forsaken them utterly, and the psalmist, in the name of the people, calls on him not…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 17-26Verses 17-26 In afflictions, we must not seek relief by any sinful compliance; but should continually meditate on the truth, purity, and knowledge of our heart-searching God. Hearts sins and secret sins are known to God, and must be reckoned for. He knows the secret of the heart, therefore judges of the words and actions. While our troubles do not drive us from our duty to God, we should not suffer them to drive us from our comfort in God. Let us take…Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 23-2623-26. This style of addressing God, as indifferent, is frequent (Psa 3:7; 9:19; 13:1, &c.). However low their condition, God is appealed to, on the ground, and for the honor, of His mercy.Read the comment
