Psalms 78:5-72

5For He established a 1testimony in Jacob, And appointed a 2law in Israel, Which He 3commanded our fathers That they were to 45teach them to their children,66So that the generation to come would know, 7the children yet to be born, That they would arise and 8tell them to their children,7So that they would put their confidence in God And 9not forget the works of God, But 10comply with His commandments,8And 11not be like their fathers, A 12stubborn and rebellious generation, A generation that 13did not 14prepare its heart And whose spirit was not 15faithful to God.

9The sons of Ephraim 16were 17archers equipped with bows, Yet 18they turned back on the day of battle.10They 19did not keep the covenant of God And refused to 20walk in His Law;11They 21forgot His deeds And His 22miracles that He had shown them.1223He performed wonders before their fathers In the land of Egypt, in the 24field of Zoan.13He 25divided the sea and caused them to pass through, And He made the waters stand 26up like a heap.14Then He led them with the cloud by 27day And all the night with a 28light of fire.15He 29split the rocks in the wilderness And gave them plenty to drink like the ocean depths.16He 30brought forth streams from the rock And made waters run down like rivers.

17Yet they still continued to sin against Him, To 31rebel against the Most High in the desert.18And in their heart they 32put God to the test By asking for 33food 34that suited their taste.19Then they spoke against God; They said, “35Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?20Behold, He 36struck the rock so that waters gushed out, And streams were overflowing; Can He also provide bread? Will He prepare 37meat for His people?”

21Therefore the Lord heard and 38was 39full of wrath; And a fire was kindled against Jacob, And anger also mounted against Israel,22Because they 40did not believe in God And did not trust in His salvation.23Yet He commanded the clouds above And 41opened the doors of heaven;24He 42rained down manna upon them to eat, And gave them 4344food from heaven.25Man ate the bread of 45angels; He sent them 46food 4748in abundance.26He 49made the east wind blow in the sky And by His 50power He directed the south wind.27When He rained meat upon them like the dust, Even 51winged fowl like the sand of the seas,28He let them fall in the midst of 52their camp, All around their dwellings.29So they 53ate and were well filled, And He 54satisfied their longing.3055Yet before they had abandoned their longing, 56While their food was in their mouths,31The 57anger of God rose against them And killed 58some of their 59strongest ones, And 60subdued the choice men of Israel.32In spite of all this they 61still sinned And 62did not believe in His wonderful works.33So He brought 63their days to an end in futility, And their years to an end in sudden terror.

34When He killed them, then they 64sought Him, And they returned and searched 65diligently for God;35And they remembered that God was their 66rock, And the Most High God their 67Redeemer.36But they 68flattered Him with their mouth And 69lied to Him with their tongue.37For their heart was not 70steadfast toward Him, Nor were they faithful with His covenant.38But He, being 71compassionate, 7273forgave their wrongdoing and did not destroy them; And often He 7475restrained His anger And did not stir up all His wrath.39So 76He remembered that they were only 77flesh, A 7879wind that passes and does not return.

40How often they 80rebelled against Him in the wilderness And 81grieved Him in the 82desert!41Again and again they 8384tempted God, And pained the 85Holy One of Israel.42They 86did not remember 87His 88power, The day when He 89redeemed them from the enemy,43When He performed His 90signs in Egypt And His 91marvels in the field of Zoan,44And 92turned their rivers to blood, And their streams, so that they could not drink.45He sent swarms of 93flies among them that devoured them, And 94frogs that destroyed them.46He also gave their crops to the 95grasshopper And the product of their labor to the 96locust.47He 97destroyed their vines with 98hailstones And their sycamore trees with frost.48He also turned their 99cattle over to the hailstones, And their herds to bolts of lightning.49He 100sent His burning anger upon them, Fury and indignation and trouble, A band of 101destroying angels.50He leveled a path for His anger; He did not spare their souls from death, But 102turned their lives over to the plague,51And 103struck all the firstborn in Egypt, The 104first and best of their vigor in the tents of 105Ham.52But He 106led His own people out like sheep, And guided them in the wilderness 107like a flock;53He led them 108safely, so that they did not fear; But 109the sea engulfed their enemies.

54So 110He brought them to His holy 111land, To this 112113hill country 114which His right hand had gained.55He also 115drove out the nations from them And 116apportioned them as an inheritance by measurement, And had the tribes of Israel dwell in their tents.56Yet they 117118tempted and 119rebelled against the Most High God And did not keep His testimonies,57But turned back and 120acted treacherously like their fathers; They 121turned aside like a treacherous bow.58For they 122provoked Him with their 123high places And 124moved Him to jealousy with their 125carved images.59When God heard them, He 126was filled with 127wrath And He utterly 128rejected Israel;60So that He 129abandoned the 130dwelling place at Shiloh, The tent 131which He had pitched among people,61And He gave up His 132strength to captivity And His glory 133into the hand of the enemy.62He also 134turned His people over to the sword, And 135was filled with wrath at His inheritance.63136Fire devoured 137His young men, And 138His 139virgins had no wedding songs.64140His 141priests fell by the sword, And 142His 143widows could not weep.

65Then the Lord 144awoke as if from sleep, Like a 145warrior 146overcome by wine.66He 147148drove His adversaries backward; He put on them an everlasting disgrace.67He also 149rejected the tent of Joseph, And did not choose the tribe of Ephraim,68But chose the tribe of Judah, Mount 150Zion, which He loved.69And He 151built His sanctuary like the heights, Like the earth which He has established forever.70He also 152chose His servant David And took him from the sheepfolds;71From 153154the care of the 155ewes 156with nursing lambs He brought him To 157shepherd Jacob His people, And Israel 158His inheritance.72So he shepherded them according to the 159integrity of his heart, And guided them with his skillful hands.
