Psalms 78:4-72

4We will 1not conceal them from their children, But 2tell to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, And His strength and His 3wondrous works that He has done.

5For He established a 4testimony in Jacob And appointed a 5law in Israel, Which He 6commanded our fathers That they should 78teach them to their children,69That the generation to come might know, even 10the children yet to be born, That they may arise and 11tell them to their children,7That they should put their confidence in God And 12not forget the works of God, But 13keep His commandments,8And 14not be like their fathers, A 15stubborn and rebellious generation, A generation that 16did not 17prepare its heart And whose spirit was not 18faithful to God.

9The sons of Ephraim 19were 20archers equipped with bows, Yet 21they turned back in the day of battle.10They 22did not keep the covenant of God And refused to 23walk in His law;11They 24forgot His deeds And His 25miracles that He had shown them.1226He wrought wonders before their fathers In the land of Egypt, in the 27field of Zoan.13He 28divided the sea and caused them to pass through, And He made the waters stand 29up like a heap.14Then He led them with the cloud by 30day And all the night with a 31light of fire.15He 32split the rocks in the wilderness And gave them abundant drink like the ocean depths.16He 33brought forth streams also from the rock And caused waters to run down like rivers.

17Yet they still continued to sin against Him, To 34rebel against the Most High in the desert.18And in their heart they 35put God to the test By asking 36food according to their desire.19Then they spoke against God; They said, “37Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?20Behold, He 38struck the rock so that waters gushed out, And streams were overflowing; Can He give bread also? Will He provide 3940meat for His people?”

21Therefore the Lord heard and 41was 42full of wrath; And a fire was kindled against Jacob And anger also mounted against Israel,22Because they 43did not believe in God And did not trust in His salvation.23Yet He commanded the clouds above And 44opened the doors of heaven;24He 45rained down manna upon them to eat And gave them 4647food from heaven.25Man did eat the bread of 48angels; He sent them 49food 5051in abundance.26He 52caused the east wind to blow in the heavens And by His 53power He directed the south wind.27When He rained 54meat upon them like the dust, Even 55winged fowl like the sand of the seas,28Then He let them fall in the midst of 56their camp, Round about their dwellings.29So they 57ate and were well filled, And their desire He gave to them.3058Before they had satisfied their desire, 59While their food was in their mouths,31The 60anger of God rose against them And killed 61some of their 62stoutest ones, And 63subdued the choice men of Israel.32In spite of all this they 64still sinned And 65did not believe in His wonderful works.33So He brought 66their days to an end in 67futility And their years in sudden terror.

34When He killed them, then they 68sought Him, And returned and searched 69diligently for God;35And they remembered that God was their 70rock, And the Most High God their 71Redeemer.36But they 72deceived Him with their mouth And 73lied to Him with their tongue.37For their heart was not 74steadfast toward Him, Nor were they faithful in His covenant.38But He, being 75compassionate, 7677forgave their iniquity and did not destroy them; And often He 7879restrained His anger And did not arouse all His wrath.39Thus 80He remembered that they were but 81flesh, A 8283wind that passes and does not return.

40How often they 84rebelled against Him in the wilderness And 85grieved Him in the 86desert!41Again and again they 8788tempted God, And pained the 89Holy One of Israel.42They 90did not remember 91His 92power, The day when He 93redeemed them from the adversary,43When He performed His 94signs in Egypt And His 95marvels in the field of Zoan,44And 96turned their rivers to blood, And their streams, they could not drink.45He sent among them swarms of 97flies which devoured them, And 98frogs which destroyed them.46He gave also their crops to the 99grasshopper And the product of their labor to the 100locust.47He 101destroyed their vines with 102hailstones And their sycamore trees with frost.48He gave over their 103cattle also to the hailstones And their herds to bolts of lightning.49He 104sent upon them His burning anger, Fury and indignation and trouble, 105A band of destroying angels.50He leveled a path for His anger; He did not spare their soul from death, But 106gave over their life to the plague,51And 107smote all the firstborn in Egypt, The 108first issue of their virility in the tents of 109Ham.52But He 110led forth His own people like sheep And guided them in the wilderness 111like a flock;53He led them 112safely, so that they did not fear; But 113the sea engulfed their enemies.

54So 114He brought them to His holy 115land, To this 116117hill country 118which His right hand had gained.55He also 119drove out the nations before them And 120apportioned them for an inheritance by measurement, And made the tribes of Israel dwell in their tents.56Yet they 121122tempted and 123rebelled against the Most High God And did not keep His testimonies,57But turned back and 124acted treacherously like their fathers; They 125turned aside like a treacherous bow.58For they 126provoked Him with their 127high places And 128aroused His jealousy with their 129graven images.59When God heard, He 130was filled with 131wrath And greatly 132abhorred Israel;60So that He 133abandoned the 134dwelling place at Shiloh, The tent 135which He had pitched among men,61And gave up His 136strength to captivity And His glory 137into the hand of the adversary.62He also 138delivered His people to the sword, And 139was filled with wrath at His inheritance.63140Fire devoured 141His young men, And 142His 143virgins had no wedding songs.64144His 145priests fell by the sword, And 146His 147widows could not weep.

65Then the Lord 148awoke as if from sleep, Like a 149warrior 150overcome by wine.66He 151152drove His adversaries backward; He put on them an everlasting reproach.67He also 153rejected the tent of Joseph, And did not choose the tribe of Ephraim,68But chose the tribe of Judah, Mount 154Zion which He loved.69And He 155built His sanctuary like the heights, Like the earth which He has founded forever.70He also 156chose David His servant And took him from the sheepfolds;71From 157158the care of the 159ewes 160with suckling lambs He brought him To 161shepherd Jacob His people, And Israel 162His inheritance.72So he shepherded them according to the 163integrity of his heart, And guided them with his skillful hands.
