Psalms 78:4-72
4We will 1not conceal them from their children, But we will 2tell the generation to come the praises of the Lord, And His power and His 3wondrous works that He has done.
5For He established a 4testimony in Jacob, And appointed a 5law in Israel, Which He 6commanded our fathers That they were to 78teach them to their children,69So that the generation to come would know, 10the children yet to be born, That they would arise and 11tell them to their children,7So that they would put their confidence in God And 12not forget the works of God, But 13comply with His commandments,8And 14not be like their fathers, A 15stubborn and rebellious generation, A generation that 16did not 17prepare its heart And whose spirit was not 18faithful to God.
9The sons of Ephraim 19were 20archers equipped with bows, Yet 21they turned back on the day of battle.10They 22did not keep the covenant of God And refused to 23walk in His Law;11They 24forgot His deeds And His 25miracles that He had shown them.1226He performed wonders before their fathers In the land of Egypt, in the 27field of Zoan.13He 28divided the sea and caused them to pass through, And He made the waters stand 29up like a heap.14Then He led them with the cloud by 30day And all the night with a 31light of fire.15He 32split the rocks in the wilderness And gave them plenty to drink like the ocean depths.16He 33brought forth streams from the rock And made waters run down like rivers.
17Yet they still continued to sin against Him, To 34rebel against the Most High in the desert.18And in their heart they 35put God to the test By asking for 36food 37that suited their taste.19Then they spoke against God; They said, “38Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?20Behold, He 39struck the rock so that waters gushed out, And streams were overflowing; Can He also provide bread? Will He prepare 40meat for His people?”
21Therefore the Lord heard and 41was 42full of wrath; And a fire was kindled against Jacob, And anger also mounted against Israel,22Because they 43did not believe in God And did not trust in His salvation.23Yet He commanded the clouds above And 44opened the doors of heaven;24He 45rained down manna upon them to eat, And gave them 4647food from heaven.25Man ate the bread of 48angels; He sent them 49food 5051in abundance.26He 52made the east wind blow in the sky And by His 53power He directed the south wind.27When He rained meat upon them like the dust, Even 54winged fowl like the sand of the seas,28He let them fall in the midst of 55their camp, All around their dwellings.29So they 56ate and were well filled, And He 57satisfied their longing.3058Yet before they had abandoned their longing, 59While their food was in their mouths,31The 60anger of God rose against them And killed 61some of their 62strongest ones, And 63subdued the choice men of Israel.32In spite of all this they 64still sinned And 65did not believe in His wonderful works.33So He brought 66their days to an end in futility, And their years to an end in sudden terror.
34When He killed them, then they 67sought Him, And they returned and searched 68diligently for God;35And they remembered that God was their 69rock, And the Most High God their 70Redeemer.36But they 71flattered Him with their mouth And 72lied to Him with their tongue.37For their heart was not 73steadfast toward Him, Nor were they faithful with His covenant.38But He, being 74compassionate, 7576forgave their wrongdoing and did not destroy them; And often He 7778restrained His anger And did not stir up all His wrath.39So 79He remembered that they were only 80flesh, A 8182wind that passes and does not return.
40How often they 83rebelled against Him in the wilderness And 84grieved Him in the 85desert!41Again and again they 8687tempted God, And pained the 88Holy One of Israel.42They 89did not remember 90His 91power, The day when He 92redeemed them from the enemy,43When He performed His 93signs in Egypt And His 94marvels in the field of Zoan,44And 95turned their rivers to blood, And their streams, so that they could not drink.45He sent swarms of 96flies among them that devoured them, And 97frogs that destroyed them.46He also gave their crops to the 98grasshopper And the product of their labor to the 99locust.47He 100destroyed their vines with 101hailstones And their sycamore trees with frost.48He also turned their 102cattle over to the hailstones, And their herds to bolts of lightning.49He 103sent His burning anger upon them, Fury and indignation and trouble, A band of 104destroying angels.50He leveled a path for His anger; He did not spare their souls from death, But 105turned their lives over to the plague,51And 106struck all the firstborn in Egypt, The 107first and best of their vigor in the tents of 108Ham.52But He 109led His own people out like sheep, And guided them in the wilderness 110like a flock;53He led them 111safely, so that they did not fear; But 112the sea engulfed their enemies.
54So 113He brought them to His holy 114land, To this 115116hill country 117which His right hand had gained.55He also 118drove out the nations from them And 119apportioned them as an inheritance by measurement, And had the tribes of Israel dwell in their tents.56Yet they 120121tempted and 122rebelled against the Most High God And did not keep His testimonies,57But turned back and 123acted treacherously like their fathers; They 124turned aside like a treacherous bow.58For they 125provoked Him with their 126high places And 127moved Him to jealousy with their 128carved images.59When God heard them, He 129was filled with 130wrath And He utterly 131rejected Israel;60So that He 132abandoned the 133dwelling place at Shiloh, The tent 134which He had pitched among people,61And He gave up His 135strength to captivity And His glory 136into the hand of the enemy.62He also 137turned His people over to the sword, And 138was filled with wrath at His inheritance.63139Fire devoured 140His young men, And 141His 142virgins had no wedding songs.64143His 144priests fell by the sword, And 145His 146widows could not weep.
65Then the Lord 147awoke as if from sleep, Like a 148warrior 149overcome by wine.66He 150151drove His adversaries backward; He put on them an everlasting disgrace.67He also 152rejected the tent of Joseph, And did not choose the tribe of Ephraim,68But chose the tribe of Judah, Mount 153Zion, which He loved.69And He 154built His sanctuary like the heights, Like the earth which He has established forever.70He also 155chose His servant David And took him from the sheepfolds;71From 156157the care of the 158ewes 159with nursing lambs He brought him To 160shepherd Jacob His people, And Israel 161His inheritance.72So he shepherded them according to the 162integrity of his heart, And guided them with his skillful hands.
