Psalms 78:1-67

112Listen, O my people, to my 3instruction; 4Incline your ears to the words of my mouth.2I will 5open my mouth in a parable; I will utter 6dark sayings of old,3Which we have heard and known, And 7our fathers have told us.4We will 8not conceal them from their children, But 9tell to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, And His strength and His 10wondrous works that He has done.

5For He established a 11testimony in Jacob And appointed a 12law in Israel, Which He 13commanded our fathers That they should 1415teach them to their children,616That the generation to come might know, even 17the children yet to be born, That they may arise and 18tell them to their children,7That they should put their confidence in God And 19not forget the works of God, But 20keep His commandments,8And 21not be like their fathers, A 22stubborn and rebellious generation, A generation that 23did not 24prepare its heart And whose spirit was not 25faithful to God.

9The sons of Ephraim 26were 27archers equipped with bows, Yet 28they turned back in the day of battle.10They 29did not keep the covenant of God And refused to 30walk in His law;11They 31forgot His deeds And His 32miracles that He had shown them.1233He wrought wonders before their fathers In the land of Egypt, in the 34field of Zoan.13He 35divided the sea and caused them to pass through, And He made the waters stand 36up like a heap.14Then He led them with the cloud by 37day And all the night with a 38light of fire.15He 39split the rocks in the wilderness And gave them abundant drink like the ocean depths.16He 40brought forth streams also from the rock And caused waters to run down like rivers.

17Yet they still continued to sin against Him, To 41rebel against the Most High in the desert.18And in their heart they 42put God to the test By asking 43food according to their desire.19Then they spoke against God; They said, “44Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?20Behold, He 45struck the rock so that waters gushed out, And streams were overflowing; Can He give bread also? Will He provide 4647meat for His people?”

21Therefore the Lord heard and 48was 49full of wrath; And a fire was kindled against Jacob And anger also mounted against Israel,22Because they 50did not believe in God And did not trust in His salvation.23Yet He commanded the clouds above And 51opened the doors of heaven;24He 52rained down manna upon them to eat And gave them 5354food from heaven.25Man did eat the bread of 55angels; He sent them 56food 5758in abundance.26He 59caused the east wind to blow in the heavens And by His 60power He directed the south wind.27When He rained 61meat upon them like the dust, Even 62winged fowl like the sand of the seas,28Then He let them fall in the midst of 63their camp, Round about their dwellings.29So they 64ate and were well filled, And their desire He gave to them.3065Before they had satisfied their desire, 66While their food was in their mouths,31The 67anger of God rose against them And killed 68some of their 69stoutest ones, And 70subdued the choice men of Israel.32In spite of all this they 71still sinned And 72did not believe in His wonderful works.33So He brought 73their days to an end in 74futility And their years in sudden terror.

34When He killed them, then they 75sought Him, And returned and searched 76diligently for God;35And they remembered that God was their 77rock, And the Most High God their 78Redeemer.36But they 79deceived Him with their mouth And 80lied to Him with their tongue.37For their heart was not 81steadfast toward Him, Nor were they faithful in His covenant.38But He, being 82compassionate, 8384forgave their iniquity and did not destroy them; And often He 8586restrained His anger And did not arouse all His wrath.39Thus 87He remembered that they were but 88flesh, A 8990wind that passes and does not return.

40How often they 91rebelled against Him in the wilderness And 92grieved Him in the 93desert!41Again and again they 9495tempted God, And pained the 96Holy One of Israel.42They 97did not remember 98His 99power, The day when He 100redeemed them from the adversary,43When He performed His 101signs in Egypt And His 102marvels in the field of Zoan,44And 103turned their rivers to blood, And their streams, they could not drink.45He sent among them swarms of 104flies which devoured them, And 105frogs which destroyed them.46He gave also their crops to the 106grasshopper And the product of their labor to the 107locust.47He 108destroyed their vines with 109hailstones And their sycamore trees with frost.48He gave over their 110cattle also to the hailstones And their herds to bolts of lightning.49He 111sent upon them His burning anger, Fury and indignation and trouble, 112A band of destroying angels.50He leveled a path for His anger; He did not spare their soul from death, But 113gave over their life to the plague,51And 114smote all the firstborn in Egypt, The 115first issue of their virility in the tents of 116Ham.52But He 117led forth His own people like sheep And guided them in the wilderness 118like a flock;53He led them 119safely, so that they did not fear; But 120the sea engulfed their enemies.

54So 121He brought them to His holy 122land, To this 123124hill country 125which His right hand had gained.55He also 126drove out the nations before them And 127apportioned them for an inheritance by measurement, And made the tribes of Israel dwell in their tents.56Yet they 128129tempted and 130rebelled against the Most High God And did not keep His testimonies,57But turned back and 131acted treacherously like their fathers; They 132turned aside like a treacherous bow.58For they 133provoked Him with their 134high places And 135aroused His jealousy with their 136graven images.59When God heard, He 137was filled with 138wrath And greatly 139abhorred Israel;60So that He 140abandoned the 141dwelling place at Shiloh, The tent 142which He had pitched among men,61And gave up His 143strength to captivity And His glory 144into the hand of the adversary.62He also 145delivered His people to the sword, And 146was filled with wrath at His inheritance.63147Fire devoured 148His young men, And 149His 150virgins had no wedding songs.64151His 152priests fell by the sword, And 153His 154widows could not weep.

65Then the Lord 155awoke as if from sleep, Like a 156warrior 157overcome by wine.66He 158159drove His adversaries backward; He put on them an everlasting reproach.67He also 160rejected the tent of Joseph, And did not choose the tribe of Ephraim,
