Psalms 78:1-67
112Listen, my people, to my 3instruction; 4Incline your ears to the words of my mouth.2I will 5open my mouth in a parable; I will tell 6riddles of old,3Which we have heard and known, And 7our fathers have told us.4We will 8not conceal them from their children, But we will 9tell the generation to come the praises of the Lord, And His power and His 10wondrous works that He has done.
5For He established a 11testimony in Jacob, And appointed a 12law in Israel, Which He 13commanded our fathers That they were to 1415teach them to their children,616So that the generation to come would know, 17the children yet to be born, That they would arise and 18tell them to their children,7So that they would put their confidence in God And 19not forget the works of God, But 20comply with His commandments,8And 21not be like their fathers, A 22stubborn and rebellious generation, A generation that 23did not 24prepare its heart And whose spirit was not 25faithful to God.
9The sons of Ephraim 26were 27archers equipped with bows, Yet 28they turned back on the day of battle.10They 29did not keep the covenant of God And refused to 30walk in His Law;11They 31forgot His deeds And His 32miracles that He had shown them.1233He performed wonders before their fathers In the land of Egypt, in the 34field of Zoan.13He 35divided the sea and caused them to pass through, And He made the waters stand 36up like a heap.14Then He led them with the cloud by 37day And all the night with a 38light of fire.15He 39split the rocks in the wilderness And gave them plenty to drink like the ocean depths.16He 40brought forth streams from the rock And made waters run down like rivers.
17Yet they still continued to sin against Him, To 41rebel against the Most High in the desert.18And in their heart they 42put God to the test By asking for 43food 44that suited their taste.19Then they spoke against God; They said, “45Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?20Behold, He 46struck the rock so that waters gushed out, And streams were overflowing; Can He also provide bread? Will He prepare 47meat for His people?”
21Therefore the Lord heard and 48was 49full of wrath; And a fire was kindled against Jacob, And anger also mounted against Israel,22Because they 50did not believe in God And did not trust in His salvation.23Yet He commanded the clouds above And 51opened the doors of heaven;24He 52rained down manna upon them to eat, And gave them 5354food from heaven.25Man ate the bread of 55angels; He sent them 56food 5758in abundance.26He 59made the east wind blow in the sky And by His 60power He directed the south wind.27When He rained meat upon them like the dust, Even 61winged fowl like the sand of the seas,28He let them fall in the midst of 62their camp, All around their dwellings.29So they 63ate and were well filled, And He 64satisfied their longing.3065Yet before they had abandoned their longing, 66While their food was in their mouths,31The 67anger of God rose against them And killed 68some of their 69strongest ones, And 70subdued the choice men of Israel.32In spite of all this they 71still sinned And 72did not believe in His wonderful works.33So He brought 73their days to an end in futility, And their years to an end in sudden terror.
34When He killed them, then they 74sought Him, And they returned and searched 75diligently for God;35And they remembered that God was their 76rock, And the Most High God their 77Redeemer.36But they 78flattered Him with their mouth And 79lied to Him with their tongue.37For their heart was not 80steadfast toward Him, Nor were they faithful with His covenant.38But He, being 81compassionate, 8283forgave their wrongdoing and did not destroy them; And often He 8485restrained His anger And did not stir up all His wrath.39So 86He remembered that they were only 87flesh, A 8889wind that passes and does not return.
40How often they 90rebelled against Him in the wilderness And 91grieved Him in the 92desert!41Again and again they 9394tempted God, And pained the 95Holy One of Israel.42They 96did not remember 97His 98power, The day when He 99redeemed them from the enemy,43When He performed His 100signs in Egypt And His 101marvels in the field of Zoan,44And 102turned their rivers to blood, And their streams, so that they could not drink.45He sent swarms of 103flies among them that devoured them, And 104frogs that destroyed them.46He also gave their crops to the 105grasshopper And the product of their labor to the 106locust.47He 107destroyed their vines with 108hailstones And their sycamore trees with frost.48He also turned their 109cattle over to the hailstones, And their herds to bolts of lightning.49He 110sent His burning anger upon them, Fury and indignation and trouble, A band of 111destroying angels.50He leveled a path for His anger; He did not spare their souls from death, But 112turned their lives over to the plague,51And 113struck all the firstborn in Egypt, The 114first and best of their vigor in the tents of 115Ham.52But He 116led His own people out like sheep, And guided them in the wilderness 117like a flock;53He led them 118safely, so that they did not fear; But 119the sea engulfed their enemies.
54So 120He brought them to His holy 121land, To this 122123hill country 124which His right hand had gained.55He also 125drove out the nations from them And 126apportioned them as an inheritance by measurement, And had the tribes of Israel dwell in their tents.56Yet they 127128tempted and 129rebelled against the Most High God And did not keep His testimonies,57But turned back and 130acted treacherously like their fathers; They 131turned aside like a treacherous bow.58For they 132provoked Him with their 133high places And 134moved Him to jealousy with their 135carved images.59When God heard them, He 136was filled with 137wrath And He utterly 138rejected Israel;60So that He 139abandoned the 140dwelling place at Shiloh, The tent 141which He had pitched among people,61And He gave up His 142strength to captivity And His glory 143into the hand of the enemy.62He also 144turned His people over to the sword, And 145was filled with wrath at His inheritance.63146Fire devoured 147His young men, And 148His 149virgins had no wedding songs.64150His 151priests fell by the sword, And 152His 153widows could not weep.
65Then the Lord 154awoke as if from sleep, Like a 155warrior 156overcome by wine.66He 157158drove His adversaries backward; He put on them an everlasting disgrace.67He also 159rejected the tent of Joseph, And did not choose the tribe of Ephraim,
