Psalms 51

A Contrite Sinner’s Prayer for Pardon.

For the music director. A Psalm of David, when 2 Sam 12:1Nathan the prophet came to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba.

11Be gracious to me, God, according to Your faithfulness; According to the greatness of 2Your compassion, 3wipe out my wrongdoings.24Wash me thoroughly from my guilt And 5cleanse me from my sin.3For I 6know my wrongdoings, And my sin is constantly before me.47Against You, You only, I have sinned And done what is 8evil in Your sight, So that 9You 10are justified 11when You speak And 12blameless when You judge.

5Behold, I was 13brought forth in guilt, And in sin my mother conceived me.6Behold, You desire 14truth in the 15innermost being, And in secret You will 16make wisdom known to me.717Purify me 18with hyssop, and I will be clean; 19Cleanse me, and I will be 20whiter than snow.821Let me hear 22joy and gladness, Let the 23bones You have broken rejoice.924Hide Your face from my sins And wipe out all my guilty deeds.

1025Create 26in me a 27clean heart, God, And renew a 28steadfast spirit within me.1129Do not cast me away from Your presence, And do not take Your 30Holy Spirit from me.12Restore to me the 31joy of Your salvation, And sustain me with a 32willing spirit.13Then I will 33teach wrongdoers Your ways, And sinners will 34be 35converted to You.

14Save me from 36the guilt of bloodshed, God, 37the God of my salvation; Then my 38tongue will joyfully sing of Your righteousness.15Lord, 3940open my lips, So that my mouth may 41declare Your praise.16For You 42do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it; You do not take pleasure in burnt offering.17The sacrifices of God are a 43broken spirit; A broken and a contrite heart, God, You will not despise.

1844By Your favor do good to Zion; 4546Build the walls of Jerusalem.19Then You will delight in 4748righteous sacrifices, In 49burnt offering and whole burnt offering; Then 50bulls will be offered on Your altar.
