Psalms 88

A Petition to Be Saved from Death.

A Song. A Psalm of the sons of Korah. For the music director; according to Mahalath Leannoth. A Possibly, Contemplative; or Didactic; or Skillful PsalmMaskil of Heman 1 Kin 4:31; 1 Chr 2:6; Ps 89: titlethe Ezrahite.

1Lord, the 1God of my salvation, I have 2cried out by day and in the night before You.2Let my prayer 3come before You; 4Incline Your ear to my cry!3For my 5soul has 6had enough troubles, And 7my life has approached 8Sheol.4I am counted among those who 9go down to the pit; I have become like a man 10without strength,511Abandoned 12among the dead, Like the slain who lie in the grave, Whom You no longer remember, And they are 13cut off from Your hand.6You have put me in 14the lowest pit, In 15dark places, in the 16depths.7Your wrath 17has rested upon me, And You have afflicted me with 18all Your waves. Selah8You have removed 19my acquaintances far from me; You have made me an 2021object of loathing to them; I am 22shut up and cannot go out.9My 23eye grows dim from misery; I have 24called upon You every day, Lord; I have 25spread out my 26hands to You.

10Will You perform wonders for the dead? Or will 27the departed spirits rise and praise You? Selah11Will Your graciousness be declared in the grave, Your faithfulness in 28Abaddon?12Will Your wonders be made known in the 29darkness? And Your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?

13But I, Lord, have cried out 30to You for help, And 31in the morning my prayer comes before You.14Lord, why 32do You reject my soul? Why do You 33hide Your face from me?15I was miserable and 34about to die from my youth on; I suffer 35Your terrors; I grow weary.16Your 36burning anger has passed over me; Your terrors have 3738destroyed me.17They have 39surrounded me 40like water all day long; They have 41encircled me altogether.18You have removed 42lover and friend far from me; My acquaintances are in a hiding place.
