Psalms 55

Prayer for the Destruction of the Treacherous.

For the music director; on stringed instruments. A Possibly Contemplative; or Didactic; or Skillful PsalmMaskil of David.

11Listen to my prayer, God; And 2do not hide Yourself from my pleading.2Give Your 3attention to me and answer me; I am restless in my 4complaint and 56severely distracted,3Because of the voice of the enemy, Because of the 7pressure of the wicked; For they 8bring down 9trouble upon me And in anger they 10hold a grudge against me.

4My 11heart is in anguish within me, And the terrors of 12death have fallen upon me.5Fear and 13trembling come upon me, And 1415horror has 16overwhelmed me.6I said, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and 1718be at rest.7Behold, I would flee far away, I would 19spend my nights in the wilderness. Selah8I would hurry to my place of refuge From the 20stormy wind and heavy gale.”

9Confuse them, Lord, 21divide their tongues, For I have seen 22violence and strife in the city.10Day and night they go around her upon her walls, And evil and harm are in her midst.1123Destruction is in her midst; 24Oppression and deceit do not depart from her 25streets.

12For it is 26not an enemy who taunts me, Then I could endure it; Nor is it one who hates me who 27has exalted himself against me, Then I could hide myself from him.13But it is you, a man 28my equal, My 29companion and my 30confidant;14We who had sweet 31fellowship together, 32Walked in the house of God among the commotion.15May 33death come 34deceitfully upon them; May they 35go down alive to 36Sheol, For evil is in their dwelling, in their midst.

16As for me, I shall 37call upon God, And the Lord will save me.1738Evening and 39morning and at 40noon, I will complain and moan, And He will hear my voice.18He will 41redeem my soul in peace 42from the battle which is against me, For they are 43many who are aggressive toward me.19God will 44hear and humiliate them-- Even the one 45who 46sits enthroned from ancient times-- Selah With whom there 47is no change, And who 48do not fear God.20He has put forth his hands against 49those who were at peace with him; He has 5051violated his covenant.21His 52speech was 53smoother than butter, But his heart was war; His words were 54softer than oil, Yet they were drawn 55swords.

2256Cast your burden upon the Lord and He will sustain you; 57He will never allow the righteous to 5859be shaken.23But You, God, will bring them down to the 60pit of destruction; 61Men of bloodshed and deceit will 62not live out half their days. But I will 63trust in You.
