Context of Psalms 40:8
6Sacrifice and meal offering You have not desired; My ears You have opened; Burnt offering and sin offering You have not required. 7Then I said, “Behold, I come; In the scroll of the book it is written of me. I delight to do Your will, O my God; Your Law is within my heart.” 9I have proclaimed glad tidings of righteousness in the great congregation; Behold, I will not restrain my lips, O Lord, You know. 10I have not hidden Your righteousness within my heart; I have spoken of Your faithfulness and Your salvation; I have not concealed Your lovingkindness and Your truth from the great congregation.

Commentaries on Psalms 40:8
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 8To do thy will - God willed not the sacrifices under the law, but he willed that a human victim of infinite merit should be offered for the redemption of mankind. That there might be such a victim, a body was prepared for the eternal Logos, and in that body he came to do the will of God; that is, to suffer and die for the sins of the world. Hence we see that the sovereign Will of God is that Jesus should be incarnated; that he should suffer and die; or…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 8I delight to do thy will, O my God - To wit, in obeying the law; in submitting to all the trials appointed to me; in making an atonement for the sins of men. See the notes at Hebrews 10:7. Compare Philemon 2:8; Matthew 26:39. Yea, thy law is within my heart - Margin, “In the midst of my bowels.” So the Hebrew. The idea is, that the law of God was within him. His obedience was not external, but proceeded from the heart. How true this was of the Redeemer it…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 6-10Verses 6-10 The psalmist foretells that work of wonder, redemption by our Lord Jesus Christ. The Substance must come, which is Christ, who must bring that glory to God, and that grace to man, which it was impossible the sacrifices should ever do. Observe the setting apart of our Lord Jesus to the work and office of Mediator. In the volume, or roll, of the book it was written of him. In the close rolls of the Divine decrees and counsel, the covenant of…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-17This psalm has a thanksgiving song (Psalm 40:1–10) and a lament (40:11–17). The thanksgiving song explains why the psalmist is thankful (Psalm 40:1–5), shows a promise to stay committed (40:6–8), and shares a public testimony about God's character (40:7–10). The lament talks about the psalmist's troubles due to his sins (Psalm 40:11–12) and includes two prayers asking for justice (40:13–15, 17).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 6-86-8. In Paul's view this passage has more meaning than the mere expression of grateful devotion to God's service. He represents Christ as declaring that the sacrifices, whether vegetable or animal, general or special expiatory offerings, would not avail to meet the demands of God's law, and that He had come to render the required satisfaction, which he states was effected by "the offering of the body of Christ" [He 10:10], for that is the "will of God"…Read the comment
