Context of Psalms 140:9
7O God the Lord, the strength of my salvation, You have covered my head in the day of battle. 8Do not grant, O Lord, the desires of the wicked; Do not promote his evil device, that they not be exalted. Selah. “As for the head of those who surround me, May the mischief of their lips cover them. 10May burning coals fall upon them; May they be cast into the fire, Into deep pits from which they cannot rise. 11May a slanderer not be established in the earth; May evil hunt the violent man speedily.”

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9As for the head of those that compass me about - Luther renders this, “The calamity which my enemies design against me must fall upon their own heads.” The passage stands in contrast with Psalm 140:7: “Thou hast covered my head,” etc. As for his own head, it had been protected in the day of battle. In reference now to the heads of his enemies - of those that compassed him about - he prays that what they had designed for “his” head might come by a just…Read the comment
