Psalms 89

The Lord’s Covenant with David and Israel’s Afflictions.

A Possibly, Contemplative; or Didactic; or Skillful PsalmMaskil of 1 Kin 4:31Ethan Ps 88: titlethe Ezrahite.

1I will 1sing of the graciousness of the Lord forever; To all generations I will 2make Your 3faithfulness known with my mouth.2For I have said, “4Graciousness will be built up forever; In the heavens You will establish Your 5faithfulness.”3“I have made a covenant with 6My chosen; I have 7sworn to My servant David,4I will establish your 89descendants forever And build up your 10throne to all generations.” Selah

5The 11heavens will praise Your wonders, Lord; Your faithfulness also 12in the assembly of the 13holy ones.6For 14who in the skies is comparable to the Lord? Who among the 1516sons of the mighty is like the Lord,7A God 17greatly feared in the council of the 18holy ones, And 19awesome above all those who are around Him?8Lord God of armies, 20who is like You, mighty 21Lord? Your faithfulness also surrounds You.9You rule the surging of the sea; When its waves rise, You 22calm them.10You Yourself crushed 2324Rahab like one who is slain; You 25scattered Your enemies with 26Your mighty arm.

11The 27heavens are Yours, the earth also is Yours; The 28world and 29all it contains, You have established them.12The 30north and the south, You have created them; 31Tabor and 32Hermon 33shout for joy at Your name.13You have 34a strong arm; Your hand is mighty, Your 35right hand is exalted.1436Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; 37Mercy and 38truth go before You.15Blessed are the people who know the 3940joyful sound! Lord, they walk in the 41light of Your face.16In 42Your name they rejoice all the day, And by Your righteousness they are exalted.17For You are the glory of 43their strength, And by Your favor 44our 45horn is exalted.18For our 46shield belongs to the Lord, 47And our king to the 48Holy One of Israel.

1949Once You spoke in vision to Your godly 50ones, And said, “I have 51given help to one who is 52mighty; I have exalted one 53chosen from the people.20I have 54found My servant David; With My holy 55oil I have anointed him,21With whom 56My hand will be established; My arm also will 57strengthen him.22The enemy will not 58deceive him, Nor will the 5960son of wickedness afflict him.23But I will 61crush his adversaries before him, And strike those who hate him.24My 62faithfulness and My favor will be with him, And in My name his 63horn will be exalted.25I will also place his hand 64on the sea, And his right hand on the rivers.26He will call to Me, ‘You are 65my Father, My God, and the 66rock of my salvation.’27I will also make him My 67firstborn, The 68highest of the kings of the earth.28I will maintain My 69favor for him forever, And My 70covenant shall be confirmed to him.29So I will establish his 7172descendants forever, And his 73throne 74as the days of heaven.

30“If his sons 75abandon My Law And do not walk in My judgments,31If they 76violate My statutes And do not keep My commandments,32Then I will punish their wrongdoing with the 77rod, And their guilt with 78afflictions.33But I will not 79withhold 80My favor from him, Nor deal falsely in My faithfulness.34I will not 81violate My 82covenant, Nor will I 83alter 84the utterance of My lips.3585Once I have 86sworn by My holiness; I will not lie to David.36His 8788descendants shall endure forever, And his 89throne 90as the sun before Me.37It shall be established forever 91like the moon, And a 92witness in the sky is faithful.” Selah

38But You have 93rejected and 94refused, You have been full of wrath 95against Your 96anointed.39You have 9798repudiated the covenant of Your servant; You have 99profaned 100his crown 101in the dust.40You have 102broken down all his walls; You have 103brought his strongholds to ruin.41104All who pass along the way plunder him; He has become a 105disgrace to his neighbors.42You have 106exalted the right hand of his adversaries; You have 107made all his enemies rejoice.43You also turn back the edge of his sword, And have 108not made him stand in battle.44You have put an end to his 109110splendor And cast his throne to the ground.45You have 111shortened the days of his youth; You have 112covered him with shame. Selah

46113How long, Lord? Will You hide Yourself forever? Will Your 114wrath burn like fire?47115Remember 116what my lifespan is; For what 117futility 118You have created all the sons of mankind!48What man can live and not 119see death? Can he 120save his soul from the 121power of 122Sheol? Selah

49Where are Your former acts of favor, Lord, Which You 123swore to David in Your faithfulness?50Remember, Lord, the 124taunt against Your servants; 125How I carry in my heart the taunts of all the many peoples,51With which 126Your enemies have taunted, Lord, With which they have taunted the footsteps of 127Your anointed.
