Context of Psalms 37:34

32The wicked spies upon the righteous And seeks to kill him. 33The Lord will not leave him in his hand Or let him be condemned when he is judged. Wait for the Lord and keep His way, And He will exalt you to inherit the land; When the wicked are cut off, you will see it. 35I have seen a wicked, violent man Spreading himself like a luxuriant tree in its native soil. 36Then he passed away, and lo, he was no more; I sought for him, but he could not be found.

Commentaries on Psalms 37:34

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 34Wait on the Lord, and keep his way - This is the true mode of waiting on God which the Scripture recommends; keeping God's way - using all his ordinances, and living in the spirit of obedience. He who waits thus is sure to have the farther blessings of which he is in pursuit. קוה kavah, to wait, implies the extension of a right line from one point to another. The first point is the human heart; the line is its intense desire; and the last point is God, to…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 34Wait on the Lord - See the notes at Psalm 37:9. Let your hope be from the Lord; depend wholly upon Him; have such confidence in Him as to expect His gracious interposition in your behalf. And keep his way - Or, walk in the path which He commands. Do not turn from that at any thee. Do not allow any temptation, or any opposition, to cause you to swerve from that path. And he shall exalt thee to inherit the land - See Psalm 37:3, Psalm 37:9, Psalm 37:18…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 34-40Verses 34-40 Duty is ours, and we must mind it; but events are God's, we must refer the disposal of them to him. What a striking picture is in ver. #(35-36), of many a prosperous enemy of God! But God remarkably blights the projects of the prosperous wicked, especially persecutors. None are perfect in themselves, but believers are so in Christ Jesus. If all the saint's days continue dark and cloudy, his dying day may prove comfortable, and his sun set…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-40This psalm addresses the issues raised in Psalm 36: How should the godly react to evil? When will the Lord bring justice? Why does he allow the wicked to harm his creation? Psalm 37 provides clear answers that reduce the tensions of life (Psalm 37:1–9, 34) and promise that the meek will have a future (Psalm 37:10–11, 39–40). The contrast between the godly and the wicked highlights the uselessness of foolishness (Psalm 37:12–24, 27–33). The psalmist's…Read the comment
