Context of Psalms 118:10

8It is better to take refuge in the Lord Than to trust in man. 9It is better to take refuge in the Lord Than to trust in princes. All nations surrounded me; In the name of the Lord I will surely cut them off. 11They surrounded me, yes, they surrounded me; In the name of the Lord I will surely cut them off. 12They surrounded me like bees; They were extinguished as a fire of thorns; In the name of the Lord I will surely cut them off.

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 10All nations compassed me about - This is by some supposed to relate to David, at the commencement of his reign, when all the neighboring Philistine nations endeavored to prevent him from establishing himself in the kingdom. Others suppose it may refer to the Samaritans, Idumeans, Ammonites, and others, who endeavored to prevent the Jews from rebuilding their city and their temple after their return from captivity in Babylon. But in the name of the Lord…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 10All nations compassed me about - They surrounded me; they hemmed me in on every side, so that I seemed to have no chance to escape.
