Instruction about Prayer
1It happenedG1096 that whileG1722 1Jesus was prayingG4336 in a certainG5100 placeG5117, whenG5613 He had finishedG3973, oneG5100 of His disciplesG3101 saidG3004 to Him, “LordG2962, teachG1321 us to prayG4336, justG2531 asG2531 JohnG2491 alsoG2532 taughtG1321 his disciplesG3101.” 2And He saidG3004 to them, “2WhenG3752 you prayG4336, sayG3004: ‘3FatherG3962, 4hallowedG37 be Your nameG3686. 5Your kingdomG932 comeG2064.3GiveG1325 us 6eachG2596 dayG2250 our 7dailyG1967 breadG740.4And forgiveG863 us our sinsG266, For we ourselvesG846 alsoG2532 forgiveG863 everyoneG3956 who 8is indebtedG3784 to us. And do not leadG1533 us into temptationG3986.’”
5And He saidG3004 to them, “9SupposeG5101 oneG5101 of you hasG2192 a friendG5384, and goesG4198 to him at midnightG3317 and saysG3004 to him, ‘FriendG5384, lendG5531 me threeG5140 loavesG740, 6becauseG1894 a friendG5384 of mineG1473 has comeG3854 to me from a journeyG3598 and I haveG2192 nothingG3756 to serveG3908 him’; 7and fromG2081 insideG2081 he answersG611 and saysG3004, ‘Do not botherG2873G3930 me; the doorG2374 has alreadyG2235 been shutG2808 and my childrenG3813 10and I are in bedG2845; I cannotG1410G3756 getG450 upG450 and giveG1325 you anything.’ 8I tellG3004 you, evenG2532 ifG1487 he will not getG450 upG450 and giveG1325 him anything just becauseG1223 he is his friendG5384, yetG1065 11becauseG1223 of his 12shamelessnessG335 he will getG1453 upG1453 and giveG1325 him as muchG3745 as he needsG5535.
9“SoG2532 I sayG3004 to you, 1314askG154, and it will be givenG1325 to you; 15seekG2212, and you will findG2147; 16knockG2925, and it will be openedG455 to you. 10For everyoneG3956 who asksG154 receivesG2983, and the one who seeksG2212 findsG2147, and to the one who knocksG2925, it will be openedG455. 11NowG1161 17whichG5101 oneG5101 of you fathersG3962 will his sonG5207 askG154 for a 18fishG2486, and insteadG473 ofG473 a fishG2486, he will giveG1929 him a snakeG3789? 12OrG2228 he will evenG2532 askG154 for an eggG5609, and his father will giveG1929 him a scorpionG4651? 13SoG3767 19ifG1487 you, despite beingG5225 20evilG4190, knowG3609 howG3609 to giveG1325 goodG18 giftsG1390 to your childrenG5043, howG4214 muchG4214 moreG3123 will 21your heavenlyG1537G3772 FatherG3962 giveG1325 the HolyG40 SpiritG4151 to thoseG3588 who askG154 Him?”
Pharisees’ Blasphemy
1422And He was castingG1544 outG1544 a muteG2974 demonG1140; when the demonG1140 had goneG1831 outG1831, the manG2974 who was previously unableG2974 toG2974 speakG2974 talkedG2980, and the crowdsG3793 wereG2296 amazedG2296. 15But someG5100 of them saidG3004, “He castsG1544 outG1544 the demonsG1140 23by 24BeelzebulG954, the rulerG758 of the demonsG1140.” 16OthersG2087, 25to testG3985 Him, 26were demandingG2212 of Him a 27signG4592 from heavenG3772. 1728But He knewG3609 their thoughtsG1270 and saidG3004 to them, “EveryG3956 kingdomG932 dividedG1266 againstG1909 itselfG1438 is laidG2049 wasteG2049; and a houseG3624 divided againstG1909 29itselfG3624 fallsG4098. 18And ifG1487 30SatanG4567 alsoG2532 has been dividedG1266 againstG1909 himselfG1438, howG4459 will his kingdomG932 31standG2476? For you claimG3004 that I castG1544 outG1544 the demonsG1140 by 32BeelzebulG954. 19YetG1161 ifG1487 by 33BeelzebulG954 I castG1544 outG1544 the demonsG1140, by whomG5101 do your sonsG5207 castG1544 them outG1544? ThereforeG1223G3778, they will be your judgesG2923. 20But ifG1487 I castG1544 outG1544 the demonsG1140 by 34the 35fingerG1147 of GodG2316, thenG686 36the kingdomG932 of GodG2316 has comeG5348 upon you. 21WhenG3752 37a strongG2478 man, fullyG2528 armedG2528, guardsG5442 his ownG1438 houseG833, his possessionsG5225 are 38secureG1722G1515. 22But whenG1875 someone strongerG2478 than he attacksG1904 him and overpowersG3528 him, that man takesG142 awayG142 his armorG3833 on whichG3739 he had reliedG3982 and distributesG1239 his plunderG4661. 2339The one who is not with Me is againstG2596 Me; and the one who does not gatherG4863 with Me scattersG4650.
24“40WhenG3752 the uncleanG169 spiritG4151 comesG1831 outG1831 of 41a personG444, it passesG1330 throughG1223 waterlessG504 placesG5117 seekingG2212 restG372, and not findingG2147 any, it thenG5119 saysG3004, ‘I will returnG5290 to my houseG3624 fromG3606 whichG3606 I cameG1831.’ 25And when it comesG2064, it findsG2147 it sweptG4563 and putG2885 inG2885 orderG2885. 26ThenG5119 it goesG4198 and bringsG3880 alongG3880 sevenG2033 otherG2087 spiritsG4151 moreG4190 evilG4190 than itselfG1438, and they comeG1525 inG1525 and liveG2730 thereG1563; and the lastG2078 condition of that personG444 becomesG1096 worseG5501 than the firstG4413.”
27WhileG1722 42Jesus was sayingG3004 theseG3778 thingsG3778, oneG5100 of the womenG1135 in the crowdG3793 raisedG1869 her voiceG5456 and saidG3004 to Him, “43BlessedG3107 is the wombG2836 that carriedG941 You, and the breastsG3149 at whichG3739 You nursedG2337!” 28But He saidG3004, “On the contraryG3303G3767, blessedG3107 are 44thoseG3588 who hearG191 the wordG3056 of GodG2316 and followG5442 it.”
The Sign of Jonah
29NowG1161 as the crowdsG3793 were increasingG1865, He beganG757 to sayG3004, “45ThisG3778 generationG1074 is a wickedG4190 generationG1074; it 46demandsG2212 a 47signG4592, and so noG3756 48signG4592 will be givenG1325 to it exceptG1487G3361 the 49signG4592 of JonahG2495. 30For justG2531 asG2531 50JonahG2495 becameG1096 a 51signG4592 to the NinevitesG3536, soG3779 will the SonG5207 of ManG444 be to thisG3778 generationG1074. 31The 52QueenG938 of the SouthG3558 will riseG1453 upG1453 with the menG435 of thisG3778 generationG1074 at the judgmentG2920 and condemnG2632 them, becauseG3754 she cameG2064 from the endsG4009 of the earthG1093 to listenG191 to the wisdomG4678 of SolomonG4672; and beholdG2400, something greaterG4183 than SolomonG4672 is hereG5602. 32The menG435 of NinevehG3536 will standG450 upG450 with thisG3778 generationG1074 at the judgmentG2920 and condemnG2632 it, becauseG3754 53they repentedG3340 at the preachingG2782 of JonahG2495; and beholdG2400, something greaterG4183 than JonahG2495 is hereG5602.
33“54NoG3762 oneG3762 lightsG681 a lampG3088 and putsG5087 it away in a cellarG2926 norG3761 underG5259 a basketG3426, but on the lampstandG3087, soG2443 thatG2443 thoseG3588 who enterG1531 may seeG991 the lightG5338. 3455Your eyeG3788 is the lampG3088 of your bodyG4983; whenG3752 your eyeG3788 is 56clearG573, your wholeG3650 bodyG4983 alsoG2532 is fullG5460 ofG5460 lightG5460; but whenG1875 it is 57badG4190, your bodyG4983 alsoG2532 is fullG4652 ofG4652 darknessG4652. 35SoG3767 watchG4648 outG4648 that the lightG5457 in you is not darknessG4655. 36ThereforeG3767 ifG1487 your wholeG3650 bodyG4983 is fullG5460 ofG5460 lightG5460, withoutG3361G2192 anyG5100 darkG4652 partG3313, it will be whollyG3650 illuminatedG5460, as whenG3752 the lampG3088 illuminatesG5461 you with its lightG796.”
Woes upon the Pharisees
37NowG1161 whenG1722 He had spokenG2980, a PhariseeG5330 askedG2065 Him to haveG709 lunchG709 with him; and He wentG1525 inG1525 and reclinedG377 at the table. 38When the PhariseeG5330 sawG3708 this, he wasG2296 surprisedG2296 that Jesus had not firstG4413 5859ceremoniallyG907 washedG907 beforeG4253 the 60mealG712. 39But 61the LordG2962 saidG3004 to him, “NowG3568 62you PhariseesG5330 cleanG2511 the outsideG1855 of the cupG4221 and of the dishG4094; but your insideG2081 is fullG1073 of greedG724 and wickednessG4189. 4063You foolishG878 onesG878, did He who madeG4160 the outsideG1855 not makeG4160 the insideG2081 alsoG2532? 41But 64giveG1325 that which isG1751 withinG1751 as a charitableG1654 giftG1654, and 65thenG2400 allG3956 thingsG3956 are 66cleanG2513 for you.
42“67But woeG3759 to you PhariseesG5330! For you 68payG586 tithesG586 of mintG2238, rueG4076, and everyG3956 kind of gardenG3001 herbG3001, and yet you 69ignoreG3928 justiceG2920 and the loveG26 of GodG2316; but theseG3778 are the thingsG3778 you shouldG1163 have doneG4160 withoutG3361 neglectingG3935 the othersG2548. 43WoeG3759 to you PhariseesG5330! For you 70loveG25 the seatG4410 ofG4410 honorG4410 in the synagoguesG4864 and personalG783 greetingsG783 in the marketplacesG58. 4471WoeG3759 to you! For you are likeG5613 72unseenG82 tombsG3419, and the peopleG444 who walkG4043 overG1883 them are unawareG3756G3609 of it.”
45OneG5100 of the 7374lawyersG3544 saidG3004 to Him inG611 replyG611, “TeacherG1320, when You sayG3004 theseG3778 thingsG3778, You insultG5195 us tooG2532.” 46But He saidG3004, “WoeG3759 to you 75lawyersG3544 asG2532 wellG2532! For 76you loadG5412 peopleG444 with burdensG5413 that are hardG1419 toG1419 bearG1419, 77whileG2532 you yourselvesG846 will not even 78touchG4379 the burdensG5413 with oneG1520 of your fingersG1147. 4779WoeG3759 to you! For you buildG3618 the 80tombsG3419 of the prophetsG4396, and it was your fathersG3962 who killedG615 them. 48SoG686 you are witnessesG3144 and you approveG4909 of the deedsG2041 of your fathersG3962; becauseG3754 it was they who killedG615 them, and you buildG3618 their 81tombs. 49For thisG3778 reasonG1223 alsoG2532, 82the wisdomG4678 of GodG2316 saidG3004, ‘83I will sendG649 them prophetsG4396 and apostlesG652, and some of them they will killG615, and some they will 84persecuteG1377, 50soG2443 thatG2443 the bloodG129 of allG3956 the prophetsG4396, shedG1632 85sinceG575 the foundationG2602 of the worldG2889, may be chargedG1567 86againstG575 thisG3778 generationG1074, 51from 87the bloodG129 of AbelG6 to 88the bloodG129 of ZechariahG2197, who was killedG622 betweenG3342 the altarG2379 and the houseG3624 of God; yesG3483, I tellG3004 you, it shall be chargedG1567 89againstG575 thisG3778 generationG1074.’ 52WoeG3759 to you 9091lawyersG3544! For you have takenG142 awayG142 the keyG2807 of knowledgeG1108; 92you yourselvesG846 did not enterG1525, and you hinderedG2967 thoseG3588 who were enteringG1525.”
53When He leftG1831 thatG2547 placeG2547, the scribesG1122 and the PhariseesG5330 beganG757 to beG1758 veryG1171 hostileG1758 and to interrogateG653 Him aboutG4012 manyG4183 subjects, 5493plottingG1748 againstG1748 Him 94to catchG2340 95Him inG2340 somethingG5100 He might sayG1537G4750.
