2 Samuel 1

David Learns of Saul’s Death

1Now it cameH1961 aboutH1961 afterH310 1the deathH4194 of SaulH7586, when DavidH1732 had returnedH7725 from 2the slaughterH5221 of the AmalekitesH6002, that DavidH1732 stayedH3427 twoH8147 daysH3117 in ZiklagH6860. 2And on the thirdH7992 dayH3117, beholdH2009, 3a manH376 cameH935 from 4Saul’sH7586 campH4264 5with his clothesH899 tornH7167 and 6dustH127 on his headH7218. And it happenedH1961 when he cameH935 to DavidH1732, 7he fellH5307 to the groundH776 and prostratedH2331 himself. 3Then DavidH1732 saidH559 to him, “From whereH335 do you comeH935?” And he saidH559 to him, “I have escapedH4422 from the campH4264 of IsraelH3478.” 4DavidH1732 saidH559 to him, “8HowH4100 did thingsH1697 goH1961? PleaseH4994 tellH5046 me.” And he saidH559, “The peopleH5971 have fledH5127 from the battleH4421, and manyH7235 of the peopleH5971 alsoH1571 have fallenH5307 and are deadH4191; and SaulH7586 and his sonH1121 JonathanH3083 are alsoH1571 deadH4191.” 5Then DavidH1732 saidH559 to the youngH5288 manH5288 who toldH5046 him, “HowH349 do you knowH3045 that SaulH7586 and his sonH1121 JonathanH3083 are deadH4191?” 6The youngH5288 manH5288 who toldH5046 him saidH559, “ByH7122 chanceH7122 I happenedH7136 toH7136 beH7136 on 9MountH2022 GilboaH1533, and beholdH2009, 10SaulH7586 was leaningH8172 on his spearH2595. And beholdH2009, the chariotsH7393 and the horsemenH6571 had overtakenH1692 him. 7When he lookedH6437 behindH310 himself, he sawH7200 me, and calledH7121 to me. And I saidH559, ‘HereH2009 I am.’ 8Then he saidH559 to me, ‘WhoH4310 are you?’ And I 11answeredH559 him, ‘12I am an AmalekiteH6003.’ 9And he saidH559 to me, ‘PleaseH4994 standH5975 nextH5921 to me and finishH4191 me offH4191, for 13agonyH7661 has seizedH270 me becauseH3588 my 14lifeH5315 stillH5750 lingers in me.’ 10So I stoodH5975 nextH5921 to him 15and finishedH4191 him offH4191, becauseH3588 I knewH3045 that he could not liveH2421 afterH310 he had fallenH5307. And 16I tookH3947 the crownH5145 whichH834 was on his headH7218 and the bandH685 whichH834 was on his armH2220, and I have broughtH935 them hereH2008 to my lordH113.”

11Then 17DavidH1732 tookH2388 holdH2388 of his clothesH899 and toreH7167 them, and so alsoH1571 did allH3605 the menH376 whoH834 were with him. 12And they mournedH5594 and weptH1058 and 18fastedH6684 untilH5704 eveningH6153 for SaulH7586 and his sonH1121 JonathanH3083, and for the peopleH5971 of the LordH3068 and the houseH1004 of IsraelH3478, becauseH3588 they had fallenH5307 by the swordH2719. 13Then DavidH1732 saidH559 to the youngH5288 manH5288 who informedH5046 him, “WhereH335 are you from?” And he 19answeredH559, “20I am the sonH1121 of a strangerH1616, an AmalekiteH6003.” 14And DavidH1732 saidH559 to him, “HowH349 is it you wereH3372 not afraidH3372 21to reachH7971 outH7971 with your handH3027 to destroyH7843 the Lord’sH3068 anointedH4899?” 15Then DavidH1732 calledH7121 oneH259 of the youngH5288 menH5288 and saidH559, “ComeH5066 forwardH5066, 22putH6293 him toH6293 deathH6293.” 23So he struckH5221 him and he diedH4191. 16And DavidH1732 saidH559 to him, “2425Your bloodH1818 is on your headH7218, becauseH3588 26your own mouthH6310 has testifiedH6030 against you, sayingH559, ‘I have finishedH4191 offH4191 the Lord’sH3068 anointedH4899.’”

David’s Song of Mourning for Saul and Jonathan

17Then DavidH1732 27sangH6969 thisH2088 songH7015 ofH7015 mourningH7015 overH5921 SaulH7586 and his sonH1121 JonathanH3083, 18and he toldH559 them to teachH3925 the sonsH1121 of JudahH3063 the mourning song of the bowH7198; beholdH2009, it is writtenH3789 in 28the BookH5612 of JasharH3477.19“29Your beautyH6643, IsraelH3478, is 30slaughteredH2491 on your highH1116 placesH1116! 31HowH349 the mightyH1368 have fallenH5307!2032TellH5046 it not in GathH1661, ProclaimH1319 it not in the streetsH2351 of AshkelonH831, OrH6435 33the daughtersH1323 of the PhilistinesH6430 will rejoiceH8055, The daughtersH1323 of 34the uncircumcisedH6189 will celebrateH5937.2135MountainsH2022 of GilboaH1533, 36May there be noH408 dewH2919 norH408 rainH4306 on you, or fieldsH7704 of offeringsH8641! For thereH8033 the shieldH4043 of the mightyH1368 was defiledH1602, The shieldH4043 of SaulH7586, not 37anointedH4899 with oilH8081.2238From the bloodH1818 of those 39slaughteredH2491, from the fatH2459 of the mightyH1368, 40The bowH7198 of JonathanH3083 did not turnH5472 backH268, And the swordH2719 of SaulH7586 did not returnH7725 41unstainedH7387.23SaulH7586 and JonathanH3083, belovedH157 and delightfulH5273 in 42lifeH2425, And in their deathsH4194 they were not separatedH6504; 43They wereH7043 swifterH7043 thanH4480 eaglesH5404, 44They were mightierH1396 thanH4480 lionsH738.24DaughtersH1323 of IsraelH3478, weepH1058 overH413 SaulH7586, Who clothedH3847 you in scarletH8144, with jewelryH5730, Who putH5927 goldH2091 jewelryH5716 on your apparelH3830.2545HowH349 the mightyH1368 have fallenH5307 in the midstH8432 of the battleH4421! JonathanH3083 is 46slaughteredH2491 on your highH1116 placesH1116.26I amH6887 distressedH6887 for you, my brotherH251 JonathanH3083; You have beenH5276 47aH5276 closeH3966 friendH5276 to me. 48Your loveH160 for me wasH6381 moreH4480 wonderfulH6381 ThanH4480 the loveH160 of womenH802.2749HowH349 the mightyH1368 have fallenH5307, And 50the weaponsH3627 of warH4421 have perishedH6!”
