Israel’s History after the Exodus
1TheseH428 are the wordsH1697 that MosesH4872 spokeH1696 to allH3605 IsraelH3478 1acrossH5676 the JordanH3383 in the wildernessH4057, in the 2ArabahH6160 oppositeH4136 3SuphH5489, betweenH996 ParanH6290 and TophelH8603, LabanH3837, HazerothH2698, and DizahabH1774. 2It is elevenH259H6240 days’H3117 journey from 4HorebH2722 by wayH1870 of MountH2022 5SeirH8165 to 6Kadesh-barneaH6947. 3In the 7fortiethH705 yearH8141, on the firstH259 day of the eleventhH6249H6240 monthH2320, MosesH4872 spokeH1696 to the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478, 8in accordance with everythingH3605 that the LordH3068 had commandedH6680 him to declare to them, 4afterH310 he had 910defeatedH5221 SihonH5511 the kingH4428 of the AmoritesH567, whoH834 livedH3427 in HeshbonH2809, and 11OgH5747 the kingH4428 of BashanH1316, whoH834 livedH3427 in 12AshtarothH6252 13and in EdreiH154. 5AcrossH5676 the JordanH3383 in the landH776 of MoabH4124, MosesH4872 beganH2974 to explainH874 thisH2088 LawH8451, sayingH559,
6“The LordH3068 our GodH430 14spokeH1696 to us at HorebH2722, sayingH559, ‘You have stayedH3427 longH7227 enoughH7227 at thisH2088 mountainH2022. 7TurnH6437 and setH5265 outH5265 onH5265 your journeyH5265, and goH935 to 15the hillH2022 countryH2022 of the AmoritesH567, and to allH3605 their neighborsH7934 in the ArabahH6160, in the hillH2022 countryH2022, in the lowlandH8219, in 16the 17NegevH5045, by the seacoastH3220H2348, the landH776 of the CanaanitesH3669, and LebanonH3844, as farH5704 as the greatH1419 riverH5104, the riverH5104 EuphratesH6578. 8SeeH7200, I have placedH5414 the landH776 beforeH6440 you; goH935 inH935 and takeH3423 possessionH3423 of the landH776 whichH834 the LordH3068 18sworeH7650 to giveH5414 to your fathersH1, to AbrahamH85, to IsaacH3327, and to JacobH3290, and their 19descendantsH2233 afterH310 them.’
9“And I spokeH559 to you at that timeH6256, sayingH559, ‘20I amH3201 not ableH3201 to endureH5375 you aloneH905. 10The LordH3068 your GodH430 has 21multipliedH7235 you, and beholdH2009, you are this dayH3117 like the starsH3556 of heavenH8064 in numberH7230. 11May the LordH3068, the GodH430 of your fathersH1 increaseH3254 you a thousandH505 timesH6471 more than you are, and blessH1288 you, 22justH3512 asH3512 He has 23promisedH1696 you! 12HowH351 can I aloneH905 endureH5375 the burdenH2960 and weightH4853 of you and your strifeH7379? 1324ObtainH3051 for yourselves menH376 who are wiseH2450, discerningH995, and informedH3045 from your tribesH7626, and I will appointH7760 them as your headsH7218.’ 14And you answeredH6030 me and saidH559, ‘The thingH1697 whichH834 you have saidH1696 to doH6213 is goodH2896.’ 15So I tookH3947 the headsH7218 of your tribesH7626, wiseH2450 and informedH3045 menH376, and 25appointedH5414 them as headsH7218 overH5921 you, commandersH8269 of thousandsH505, 26hundredsH3967, 27fiftiesH2572, and 28tensH6235, and officersH7860 for your tribesH7626.
16“Then I orderedH6680 your judgesH8199 at that timeH6256, sayingH559, ‘HearH8085 the cases betweenH996 your fellowH251 countrymenH251 and 29judgeH8199 righteouslyH6664 betweenH996 a personH376 and his fellowH251 countrymanH251, or the strangerH1616 who is with him. 1730You are not to 31showH5234 partialityH5234H6440 in judgmentH4941; you shall hearH8085 the smallH6996 and the greatH1419 alike. You are 32not to be afraidH1481 of any personH376, for the judgmentH4941 isH7185 God’sH430. 33The caseH1697 that is tooH4480 difficultH7185 for you, you shall bringH7126 to me, and I will hearH8085 it.’ 18At that timeH6256 34I commandedH6680 you allH3605 the thingsH1697 that you were to doH6213.
19“Then we setH5265 outH5265 from 35HorebH2722, and wentH1980 through allH3605 that 36greatH1419 and terribleH3372 wildernessH4057 that you sawH7200 on the wayH1870 to the 37hillH2022 countryH2022 of the AmoritesH567, justH3512 asH3512 the LordH3068 our GodH430 had commandedH6680 us; and we cameH935 to 38Kadesh-barneaH6947. 20And I saidH559 to you, ‘You have comeH935 to the hillH2022 countryH2022 of the AmoritesH567, whichH834 the LordH3068 our GodH430 is about to giveH5414 us. 21SeeH7200, the LordH3068 your GodH430 has placedH5414 the landH776 beforeH6440 you; goH5927 upH5927, takeH3423 possessionH3423, justH3512 asH3512 the LordH3068, the GodH430 of your fathersH1, has spokenH1696 to you. 39Do not fearH3372 or be dismayedH2865.’
22“40Then allH3605 of you approachedH7126 me and saidH559, ‘Let us sendH7971 menH376 aheadH6440 of us, so that they may spyH2658 outH2658 the landH776 for us, and bringH7725 backH7725 to us wordH1697 of the wayH1870 by whichH834 we should goH5927 upH5927, and the citiesH5892 whichH834 we should enterH935.’ 23The 41planH1697 pleasedH3190H5869 me, and I tookH3947 twelveH8147H6240 of your menH376, oneH259 manH376 for each tribeH7626. 24Then 42they turnedH6437 and wentH5927 upH5927 into the hillH2022 countryH2022, and cameH935 to the ValleyH5158 of EshcolH812, and spiedH7270 it outH7270. 25And they tookH3947 some of the fruitH6529 of the landH776 in their handsH3027 and broughtH3381 it downH3381 to us. They also broughtH7725 us backH7725 a reportH1697 and saidH559, ‘The landH776 that the LordH3068 our GodH430 is about to giveH5414 us is goodH2896.’
26“43Yet you were unwillingH3808H14 to goH5927 upH5927; instead you 44rebelledH4784 againstH854 the 45commandH6310 of the LordH3068 your GodH430; 27and 46you grumbledH7279 in your tentsH168 and saidH559, ‘Because the LordH3068 hatesH8135 us, He has broughtH3318 us outH3318 of the landH776 of EgyptH4714, to handH3027H5414 us overH5414 to the AmoritesH567 to destroyH8045 us. 28WhereH575 can we goH5927 upH5927? Our brothersH251 have made our heartsH3824 meltH4549, by sayingH559, “The peopleH5971 are biggerH1419 and tallerH7311 thanH4480 we; the citiesH5892 are largeH1419 and fortifiedH1219 up to heavenH8064. And besidesH1571, we sawH7200 47the sonsH1121 of the AnakimH6062 thereH8033.”’ 29But I saidH559 to you, ‘Do not be terrifiedH6206, norH3808 fearH3372 them. 30The LordH3068 your GodH430, who goesH1980 beforeH6440 you, will 48HimselfH1931 fightH3898 for you, 49justH3605H834 as He didH6213 for you in EgyptH4714 before your eyesH5869, 31and in the wildernessH4057 whereH834 you sawH7200 howH834 50the LordH3068 your GodH430 carriedH5375 you, justH3512 asH3512 a manH376 carriesH5375 his sonH1121, on allH3605 of the roadH1870 whichH834 you have walkedH1980 untilH5704 you cameH935 to thisH2088 placeH4725.’ 32Yet 5152in spite of all thisH2088, you did not trustH539 the LordH3068 your GodH430, 3353who goesH1980 beforeH6440 you on your wayH1870, 54to seekH8446 outH8446 a placeH4725 for you to makeH2583 campH2583, in the fireH784 by nightH3915 to showH7200 you the wayH1870 by whichH834 you should goH1980, and in the cloudH6051 by dayH3119.
34“Then the LordH3068 heardH8085 the soundH6963 of your wordsH1697, and He wasH7107 angryH7107 and 55sworeH7650 anH7650 oathH7650, sayingH559, 35‘56Not oneH376 of theseH428 menH376, thisH2088 evilH7451 generationH1755, shall seeH7200 the goodH2896 landH776 whichH834 I sworeH7650 to giveH5414 your fathersH1, 36exceptH2108 CalebH3612 the sonH1121 of JephunnehH3312; he shall seeH7200 it, and 57to him I will giveH5414 the landH776 on whichH834 he has setH1869 footH1869, and to his sonsH1121, becauseH3282H834 he has followedH310 the LordH3068 fullyH4390.’ 3758The LordH3068 was angryH599 with me alsoH1571 on your accountH1558, sayingH559, ‘59Not evenH1571 you shall enterH935 thereH8033. 38JoshuaH3091 the sonH1121 of NunH5126, who standsH5975 beforeH6440 you, 60shall himselfH1931 enterH935 thereH8033; encourageH2388 him, for 61he will giveH5157 it to IsraelH3478 asH5157 anH5157 inheritanceH5157. 39Moreover, 62your littleH2945 onesH2945 whoH834, you saidH559, would becomeH1961 plunderH957, and your sonsH1121, whoH834 this dayH3117 haveH3045 63noH3808 knowledgeH3045 of goodH2896 and evilH7451, shall enterH935 thereH8033, and I will giveH5414 it to them and they shall take possessionH3423 of it. 40But as for you, 64turnH6437 aroundH6437 and setH5265 outH5265 for the wildernessH4057 by the wayH1870 of the 65RedH5488 SeaH3220.’
41“66Then you repliedH6030H559 to me, ‘We have sinnedH2398 against the LordH3068; we ourselvesH587 will goH5927 upH5927 and fightH3898, justH3605H834 as the LordH3068 our GodH430 commandedH6680 us.’ And everyH376 manH376 of you strappedH2296 onH2296 his weaponsH3627 of warH4421, and you viewedH1951 it asH1951 easyH1951 to goH5927 upH5927 into the hillH2022 countryH2022. 4267But the LordH3068 saidH559 to me, ‘SayH559 to them, “Do not goH5927 upH5927 norH3808 fightH3898, for I am not amongH7130 you; otherwiseH3808 you will be 68defeatedH5062 69by your enemiesH340.”’ 43So I spokeH1696 to you, but you would not listenH8085. Instead, 70you rebelledH4784 againstH854 the 71commandH6310 of the LordH3068, and actedH2102 presumptuouslyH2102 and wentH5927 upH5927 into the hillH2022 countryH2022. 4472And the AmoritesH567 who livedH3427 in that hillH2022 countryH2022 cameH3318 outH3318 againstH7122 you and chasedH7291 you 73as beesH1682 doH6213, and they scatteredH3807 you from SeirH8165 to HormahH2767. 45Then you returnedH7725 and weptH1058 beforeH6440 the LordH3068; but the 74LordH3068 did not listenH8085 to your voiceH6963, norH3808 payH238 attentionH238 to you. 46So you remainedH3427 at 75KadeshH6946 for manyH7227 daysH3117, 76the daysH3117 that you spentH3427 there.
